Talking Heads- Live At Max's, NYC 1976

One of the few pleasures from the last couple troubling years is that I've gotten back to the routine of going to the local library and checking out some books. I'm such a slow reader and I take out more than I can read, so I end up renewing them several times before returning them. One of my most recent returns I couldn't renew because there was a hold request so I only got halfway through it (I will eventually put in a hold request). Most of the books are usually art (instruction), graphic novels and music related. The book in question is David Byrne's, How Music Works, where Byrne analysis many aspects of music from it's influences to recording technology and part biography. A very smart intelligent book every musician and music fan should read and I appreciate it is in plain easy to understand language. He also talks about the early days of the Talking Heads and as you know, I'm fascinated by musician's biographies from their point of view. I'm looking forward to finishing the book (I didn't want to just skim ahead), but in the meantime I've been listening to some Talking Heads live recordings to keep the mood alive (I was listening to TH records while I was reading the book).

Reading this book has inspired me to actually write a post (sorry, for the slow 2022, so far) and appropriately some early Talking Heads. The band formed and started playing shows in 1975, so the show we have here is still relatively early, in October of 1976, when the band was still only a three-piece with David Byrne, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz (Jerry Harrison wouldn't fully join the band until 1977, he was still in the Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman's band). The Talking Heads played most of their shows during their first year at CBGB's as a residency, playing consecutive shoes in a week, then expanded to other venues in the New York City area. Max's Kansas City was another club the band played frequently, as both clubs nurtured many critical bands from the era (Blondie, The Ramones, Heartbreakers, Patti Smith Group, Television etc.) providing these bands with a venue to hone their craft. This recording at Max's sounds really good for an audience recording and for the time period and it's a pretty accurate documentation of the Talking Heads early in the career before their debut album was released.

Buzzcocks- Live At The Palladium, NYC 1979

Happy New Year, or should I say belated since it's already a month and a half into 2019. Busy times, so sorry for the loss of a month, it's been f#*king freezing here for the past month, but my only excuse is I'm lazy and I've been watching too much hockey! I have much to post so stay tuned.

One news item I haven't addressed from last year was the untimely death of Pete Shelley, lead singer of the Buzzcocks, back in December 6th. Though the Buzzcocks only released three full length albums during their original heyday in the late 70's, their impact and influence is undeniable. Their punk energy and instantly catchy punk power pop songs were infectious and fun and a good place to start (for the unconverted) is their brilliant collection of "singles" on the Singles Going Steady compilation album. This was my first introduction to the Buzzcocks and I wore out a dubbed cassette copy of the album (that I still play today) because it's that good! Buy it, download it, stream it, whatever you got and listen to it...now!!

On Dime, after Shelley's death, there was a flood of live concert recordings from the Buzzcocks. I managed to download a few and one of the better shows, performance, setlist and sound quality-wise was a show at the Palladium in New York City from 1979. This was at the height of their powers and it's an excellent showcase to a North American audience. This is a good set and it sounds really great, high recommended!

Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers- Live At The Village Gate 1977

As Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, the band only released one studio album. That album, L.A.M.F. was originally released in 1977 and remains today as a true punk rock classic. I have the original vinyl LP I bought at a record store in Vancouver in the mid-80's and I was disappointed with the sound quality and mix of the record as it sounded dull and lifeless. Apparently, I wasn't alone with this option as the record has been re-released several times to improve the sound through re-mixes,  lost mixes and alternative versions from the original album. L.A.M.F. Revisited, L.A.M.F.: The Lost '77 Mixes (released 1994) and L.A.M.F. Definitive Edition (2012) which featured the original album, the lost mixes, demos and alternative tracks. Thunders went on to record a handful of solo studio albums, but the legacy and true appeal of the Heartbreakers was in their live performances. For a band with only one official studio album, they released several live albums capturing the Heartbreakers, especially in the late 70's at their peak. Johnny Thunders shows in the 80's were at best uneven and sometimes unpredictable. With the right mix of intoxication and preferably shows with Waldo (Walter Lure) on guitar, his live shows could also be brilliant with some classic Thunders stage banter and loose, but inspired playing. (Unfortunately, when I finally saw Thunders live it was towards the end of his life/career and the concert was a mess, he was strung out and the musicians around him weren't very good, including a pickup drummer from the crowd, sad) Anyways, many very good sounding live recordings from the Heartbreakers prime era in the mid-late 70's have been available on LP, cassette and CD in both bootleg and semi-official releases and whenever something new (unreleased) gets unearthed from someones collection it's always worth a listen.

I was in Minneapolis last June scouting out record stores and stumbled upon, Live At The Village Gate 1977 on CD. It was brand new in a slick package with a beautiful b & w gatefold CD cover, that I hadn't seen before. (I heard that the vinyl version is hot pink!) And because I'm always looking for unreleased Heartbreakers shows I bought it. The sound quality is only okay, it's a step up from a audience live recording, but it has a bit of an digital sounding enhancement to it. Once you get past that, the show itself is very good, with a solid performance and great songs. I would suggest seeking out Live at Max's, D.T.K. (Live at the Speakeasy) or even Live at the Lyceum Ballroom first before buying Live at the Village Gate. It's a nice addition to the Heartbreakers live album collection and I shouldn't complain because anything unreleased (or unheard) that is new to me, is always a welcome listen at any time.
Happy New Year!!

Lemonheads- Tramps, NYC, October 28, 1996

For a live recording from over (almost exactly, one day late) 22 years ago, this one holds up quite well. First, the recording is outstanding mainly because it's a professionally mixed board recording that according to the notes may have been intended for a future  live release in some form. Secondly, the performance by Evan Dando and band is solid despite the fact Evan was known to be inconsistent around this period, he put together a really tight band that included John Strohm of the Blake Babies and Murph from Dinosaur Jr. The playing is energetic and overall it's a fun, kinda cool set that even covers Dinosaur Jr's, Freak Scene. Though, many critics and fans weren't big fans of Car Button Cloth, this album has grown on me through the years. The trio of Lemonheads albums from the 90's (It's a Shame About Ray, Come On Feel The Lemonheads, Car Button Cloth) are actually great records, that have stood the test of time. Sure, there was some filler, but Dando knew how to write a good, catchy pop-rock song.

This is the first of a several "outtakes" from the #12daysoftrouble series in August that I had originally intended to post. I had so many ideas of shows I wanted to post, but due to time restrictions and continuity reasons I held back some posts. I hope to get back on track with regular postings, as my work life is back to my boring, "regular" job. I'm feeling physically and mentally stronger (movie set dressing is definitely hard work!) which is a good thing, but I might revisit the film biz in the new year. Anyways, more to come soon and listen to this Lemonheads show because it's a very fine fine recording.
Enjoy!

Notes from original poster: It would appear this sprightly Lemonheads performance was professionally recorded for potential use as a source of live tracks or a mini live album to be sent out to radio and aired later as a live Lemonheads broadcast. This recording of the full set was transferred from an in-house reference cassette likely used to approve the mix/sound quality and to select which tracks to use later.

Day 2: Young Fresh Fellows- Live In NYC 1989

If you've been following this blog for any length of time you probably already know who my favourite band is. The first clue is in the name of this music blog which is also the title of a song by the Young Fresh Fellows, from their debut album, The Fabulous Sounds Of The Pacific Northwest. Teenage Dogs In Trouble is the 12th track on the album which was released in 1984 and I hope this blog can do justice to the song (and the band). When I traded tapes back in the early 90's, my top band on my want list was any live recordings from the Fellows. A great starting point was the Gag Fah tape that featured a compilation of live, outtakes and rare tracks from pre-1990, but it took me a lot of list exchanges and searching to find any live recordings. Eventually I connected with some traders that had shows from 80's and 90's and once the internet took off I was able to work trades through sites like, Tapetraders.com, eTree and downloading on Dime.  Once you've compiled all you can buy from a band, like the Fellows or the Replacements (albums, CD's 7" ers, eps' etc) the search for live recordings and unreleased songs can only help the addiction to hear more. If you're a fan of the Young Fresh Fellows (or if you're not yet, you will be), four of the twelve days of trouble are for you!

This Young Fresh Fellows show came to me through a trade many years ago along with a couple other Fellows shows. It was transferred onto a CDR as one long track, but for your convenience and mine, I split the tracks and added a setlist. The album, This One's For The Ladies came out the same year as this show and it was the beginning of the Kurt Bloch-era both on record and live replacing guitarist Chuck Carroll. Funny thing is, this might be the first show of the tour after Kurt broke his arm or wrist during a previous show and he was temporarily replaced by the Pontiac Brother's, Ward Dotson on guitar. If you've heard Gag Fah, one of the live tracks is from this show with Dotson on lead vocals for the Mott the Hoople cover, Movin' On. A good sounding audience recording with some cool covers and a select of songs from the Ladies album and Dotson does a very commendable job filling in for Kurt. The date of the show that I had listed when I received the disc was October 11, 1989, but according to the Gag Fah track list, the date is November 16, 1989. I have another YFF show from November 24 in Cincinnati, so it might make sense the correct date is in November. If anyone has any recollection or knowledge of YFF tour dates in 1989, please let me know so we can confirm the date. On the last track (19. Equator Blues (partial)), I don't think this is from the same show and I don't have any information to it's source. Let's call this the bonus track. Anyways, this is a good one, one I've wanted to post for a while.
Enjoy!

Beat Farmers- China Club 1986

Hey, it's Saturday night and if you need something to spice up your party, here's a great rockin' concert from 1986. This show was from around the time I first heard the Beat Farmers, first hearing the first album, Tales Of The New West and then buying, Van Go. What caught my attention was a couple of really good covers, There She Goes Again (Velvet Underground) and Powerfinger (Neil Young) from the first two albums. Both records received heavy rotation on my turntable at the time and their catchy country-rock sound led me to listen to other similar-named and sounding bands, Beat Rodeo, Blue Rodeo and later the Blue Shadows. They also turned me onto bands such as the Long Ryders, The Blasters, Jason and the Scorchers and E-I-E-I-O. Yes, the mid-eighties was a good time for country-esque college rock and even today listen to these bands quite often.

I never saw the Beat Farmers live, but from I've read and heard they were an amazing live band. The next best thing is this live recording which was a radio broadcast so it boasts outstanding sound as the band plows through this set of circa, Van Go and pre-Pursuit of Happiness songs. Loud and plowed and...an excellent soundtrack for Saturday night!
Enjoy!

Juliana Hatfield- Live In NYC 1997

Speaking of new releases, I received my digital download for the new Juliana Hatfield album, the Covers Album. Actually, the cover of the album indicates it's self-titled, so officially I'm not sure what it's called, but throughout the Pledgemusic updates it's been referred to as The Covers Album. I haven't listened yet, but there's an interesting selection of cover songs she's chosen. I'm saving my first listen for my road trip and a quick reminder I won't be posting anything new until the last week of August (feel free to check out my past posts). The official release late of the album is August 28th, as one of the benefits of supporting the project on Pledgemusic is the advanced copy of the record. Look for it on iTunes and according to Juliana, it will be a very limited release.

Here's a vintage Juliana Hatfield show from 1997 with her performing solo acoustic. This show was between the releases of Only Everything and Bed and around this time the unreleased record, God's Foot was schedule to be released...as you know it never has been released officially. This is a great sounding audience recording I received in a trade maybe a bit less than 10 years ago and as far as I know hasn't been shared on Dime (or anywhere?).
Enjoy!

Wilco- Live On Letterman Webcast, September 21, 2011

I promise this will be the last Jeff Tweedy-related for a while, but this show was too good to pass up. This is the live webcast concert for Wilco's performance on the Letterman show as the band played a mini-concert, that I assume was broadcast live over the web, as well as the taping for the song that would appear on the show that night.  Anyways, the sound quality on this is almost perfect and could easily be officially released (let me know if this is commercially sold) with the band performing songs from their (then) forthcoming album, The Whole Love. I've included the audio tracks from the show and at the bottom of the post the video of the "Live On Letterman" broadcast.
