Tammy & The Amps- Maxwell's July 1, 1995

In 1995, after Kim Deal put her band, The Breeders on hiatus, she formed a new band, Tammy & The Amps. They played some shows and recorded and released an album, Pacer in October 1995. The band featured Kim on lead vocals and guitar, Luis Lerma on bass; Nate Farley on lead guitar; and Jim Macpherson of the Breeders on drums. The band was named when Kim began calling herself Kim Ampersand, so they became Tammy and the Amps, though the name was shortened to just The Amps. The band's sound wasn't dissimilar from the Breeders, with a more lo-fi, unpretentious, sloppy sound, a fun project to keep Deal busy and engaged in performing live that seemed to energize her. The Amps were a one-off side project that eventually evolved themselves to become the Breeders again a short time later in 1996. Their only album, Pacer is an underrated and sometimes brilliant record that fits nicely in the Kim Deal/The Breeders discography. Personally, it's one of my favourite Deal-related albums.

Despite only playing live shows for only about one calendar year, the Amps played well over 50 shows with dates in North America, Europe and Australia. The only live recording I have might be their first ever show at Maxwell's in Hoboken. A very nice sounding recording, it sounds like a lot of fun and the band has a punk energy that sounds great. I love audience recordings from small venues, there's a raw enthusiasm you don't hear in larger concert halls or theater's and it really gives you the feeling of "being there" in the audience. A rare opportunity to hear Kim Deal outside of the Breeders and the Pixies, definitely a must-hear!
Enjoy!

Ric Ocacek & Benjamin Orr- Pre-Cars Demo Sessions 1974-1975

Many years later, as members of a popular band called, The Cars.

In the early days of this blog, a semi-regular feature called, "Before We Was Famous" (...Before He/She) featured recordings from musicians before they gained wider success or attention. Sometimes there were demos (Lou Reed, Uncle Tupelo), independent, self-produced recordings (Kathleen Edwards, The Refreshments, Emily Haines), early ignored releases (Mary Lou Lord, Norah Jones) or before a name change (The Shins (Flake), Fountains of Wayne (Pinnwheel), Electrocutes (The Donnas), Bangles (The Bangs), just to name a few that I can remember. I've always been fascinated by artist's early works and how they may or not differ from later works. Sometimes the music differs a lot, maybe through a direction change or an attempt to have more commercial appeal. I often wonder if some artist's early works display their "true" sound and how and what influences their direction. Sometimes it's just a matter of polishing up their sound, with better production or a producer that can act as an editor that presents a more cohesive sound.

Benjamin Orr And Ric Ocasek had played in a variety of bands (Milkwood, released one album) before forming, The Cars and they recorded several demos with different lineups as, Richard and the Rabbits, Ocasek & Orr and Cap'n Swing. What we have is a sampling of some of the songs recorded during those sessions that included other future Cars, including Greg Hawkes (Richard and the Rabbits, Ocasek & Orr) and guitarist Elliot Easton (aka: Elliot Steinberg- Cap'n Swing). The info file includes the complete lineups of the groups that recorded these demos. My initial impression of these songs is that it sounds nothing like the Cars, even though the Cars would form in 1976. The sound of these demos are full band, fully produced songs and the sound quality is good. Their style sounds like the early 70's, slick, over-produced, something Todd Rundgren would put out. Interesting, but not overly original or anything that stands out. It's a respectable collection of songs and somehow Orr, Ocasek, Easton, Hawkes and former Modern Lovers drummer, David Robinson altered and revamped their sound to produce a much more unique and appealing sound on the Cars debut album, which is considered one of the best debut albums from the 70's.

Today Is International Clash Day! Live In Chicago 1979

In case you weren't aware, today is International Clash Day! This is a day to sit back and enjoy their music and reflect on the influence and impact the band's music made on our lives through their songs, albums and live shows. The band's music had an influence on reggae, pop, disco, punk, rock, rap, and even world music. As Joe Strummer, co-founder of the Clash once said, the band is “…anti-fascist, we’re anti-violence, we’re anti-racist, and we’re pro-creative. We’re against ignorance.”

International Clash Day started as a movement on February 7, 2013 when John Richards, radio host on Seattle's, KEXP played Clash songs all day. This year, the station will focus on the message, "Know Your Rights" which is just as relevant now as when that song was written, maybe even more so.

As a tribute to Clash Day, I'm posting a show I thought I had in a box somewhere, so I had to grab a fresh copy from Dime. This concert is from the second leg of their 1979 North American tour and was recorded for a radio broadcast, so the sound quality is excellent! The songs in the set are a sweet spot, because not only are there songs from the first two albums, but a preview of songs from the upcoming, London Calling album, which would be released in December. My first ever Clash live recording (on cassette) was a show at the Palladium in New York City a week later, which was also a radio broadcast and it's a widely available bootleg.
To do today: Listen to the Clash!

Soul Asylum- Rock for Karl Benefit 2004!!

We've come to the final set from the Rock For Karl Benefit concert from 2004, that helped support Soul Asylum's co-founding member, bass player, Karl Mueller. Money raised went towards medical bills for Mueller's cancer treatment that he ultimately succumbed to on June 17, 2005, only 8 months after this concert. I'm not sure if Soul Asylum closed out the evening, but I thought it would be appropriate to post this set last, since it turned out to be Mueller's final live show with the band. A touching moment for all in attendance, including the bands that offered their talents to this evening, when Karl took the mic (track 14) to offer his thank you's to everyone that came to the show. This is the only time these bands have shared the stage together. I've seen Soul Asylum only a couple of times, the last time in Grand Forks in 2002, but it's not the same band without Mueller and Dan Murphy (who left the band in 2012) and I'm not sure if I'll see them again, making this show that much more special. The band continues on with Dave Pirner as the only remaining original member.

A Rock For Karl v. 2.0: Kill Kancer fundraising concert was held in tribute of Mueller on the seventh anniversary of his death in 2012. His widow, Mary Beth organized the event with performances from Golden Smog, Curtiss A's Dark Click and the Magnolias.

Golden Smog- Rock For Karl Benefit, Minneapolis- October 21, 2004

I don't believe this is backstage at the Quest Club.

A set from Golden Smog featured an appearance by Paul Westerberg on the set opener, the Stones, Dead Flowers, as well as Dream Syndicate/Baseball Project's, Steve Wynn on the Eddie and the Hot Rods hit, Do Anything You Wanna Do. The band mixed covers and a handful of Smog songs to their set that featured a lineup of Soul Asylum's, Dan Murphy, Kraig Johnson, Marc Perlman, Ed Ackerson, Jim Boquist and Linda Pitman on drums. Noticeably absent (correct me if I'm wrong), was Gary Louris, I wasn't there, but the absence of "Gary songs" made me suspicious. Overall, a solid set with many shout-outs to Karl and the guest appearances were cool.

Paul Westerberg- Rock For Karl Benefit, Minneapolis, 2004

Happy 2023! Yes, it's a new year and hopefully everyone is okay and ready for a new start, at least we can pretend. I'm sorry for the lack of posts for 2022, but as usual, I promise there will be more this year and I'll stay engaged and try to keep things interesting.

I'm going to keep it short and sweet, much like the Paul Westerberg set I'm posting. This is part 3 of the Rock For Karl Benefit concert from 2004, I'm not sure of the actual order of the bands/musicians that played that night, so I'm randomly guessing. The solo Westerberg set is brief and he'll appear again in the next post with another band (spoiler alert: Golden Smog). I haven't heard a lot from Paul in recent years and hoping he might release some new music or play some live dates this year. Fingers crossed!
Enjoy!

Bob Mould- Rock for Karl Benefit: Quest Club, Minneapolis 2004

Here's another set from the Rock for Karl benefit in 2004, with former Husker Du co-founder, Bob Mould, who performed a solo set. He played songs from his solo records as well as songs from his band's, Sugar and the aforementioned, Husker Du. One of the highlights of the show and definitely the most talked about surprise of the night was the appearance of Grant Hart (of Husker Du) during the final two songs of Mould's set. As far as I know, this was the first on-stage appearance for the two together since Husker Du's last show, December 11, 1987 and sadly it was the last. There was speculated "bad blood" since the split, so this reunion was most unexpected and exciting for Husker fans. It was a moment I would have liked to be there for since I'm a big fan (and still am) of the Minneapolis band, but at least someone captured this live audio recording. The recording sounds good, with the usual audience chatter, but it doesn't distract too much from the concert. It's also a treat to hear Mould in a small venue, as well as his playing in his hometown where he still has a huge fan base. A must-hear for Husker Du fans!

Gear Daddies- Rock For Karl Benefit 2004

In May 2004, Karl Mueller, bass player with Minneapolis band, Soul Asylum was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. A benefit concert, Rock for Karl was held to help with the medical bills and it brought out an all-star line-up of Minnesota area bands and musicians that was held at the Quest Club in Minneapolis on October 21, 2004. Bands/musicians included the Gear Daddies, Golden Smog, Paul Westerberg, Bob Mould and of course, Soul Asylum. As a big fan of all of these bands/musicians, this would have been a dream concert for me to attend, but unfortunately I didn't make it to the Twin Cities, but the next best thing, someone recorded the show! I've been sitting on these performances from all these bands since it was posted on Dime in 2004 and I have yet to post any of the shows, until now. I was reminded I had these live recordings when I was searching through my boxes of live discs for something unrelated, but I pulled them out for a future post. This month, Golden Smog (an acoustic version) is opening for the Jayhawks in the Twin Cities, so it's an ideal time to post. Though Paul Westerberg has paused (or retired?) from performing, the other groups are still active in some capacity, so go out and support the Gear Daddies, Bob Mould, Soul Asylum and Golden Smog, if you have the chance! Sadly, Karl passed away June 17, 2005.

First up is the Gear Daddies set from the benefit concert. Though the Daddies hailed from Austin, MN, they've been an integral part of the Twin Cities music scene for almost 40 years and continue to reunite for live shows. They haven't released a new album since the 90's, but front guy, Martin Zellar has been consistently releasing new material with his band, The Hardways. The Gear Daddies perform an excellent set of some of their best known songs and it's a bonus to hear the band live. The sound quality is good, with limited crowd chatter. I'll post the other band's sets soon, stay tuned!
Enjoy!

Zumpano Does Burt Bacharach 1999 (re-upload)

The other day, I was listening to my album of the day, (1001 albums you must hear before you die generator) Dusty Springfield's debut album, A Girl Called Dusty. It's a fine collection of songs, many familiar, early 60's Brit-Pop and some interesting Motown influenced tracks, but what caught my attention were the songs written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This is Dusty's first collaboration with the songwriters and three songs appear on this record. Two of the songs, Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa and Anyone Who Had A Heart, I recognized from the CBC session with Zumpano, broadcast back in 1999, when the band performed a set of Bacharach covers. Dusty's versions were pretty good, but I'm leaning towards Zumpano's interpretations, which I thought were all brilliant. If you're not familiar with Zumpano, they hail from Vancouver and released a pair of excellent albums in the mid-90's. Frontman/lead singer is Carl Newman, who formed the New Pornographers about a year after this broadcast. I originally posted this show in 2007 in mp3 format, and since no one probably saw it and since I'm in a nostalgic mood, I'm re-posting the set in lossless FLAC format for your listening pleasure. I originally taped this off the radio during CBC-FM radio's, RadioSonic program that broadcasted live concerts and live studio performances on Saturday night. It's a very cool live session and I've rarely seen this anywhere, so treat yourself to an unique all-Bacharach set...and chill!

Liz Phair- Whitechocolatespaceegg Sessions

I used to consider myself not much of a reader, sure, I read the newspaper everyday and read articles in magazines and on the computer, but when I really think about it a lot of my day is spent reading (in some form). We read more than we give ourselves credit for, you need to have at least basic skills of literacy to survive day to day life and our mind is busy processing information all the time. To sit back and open a book to read for pleasure has become a enjoyable leisure activity to allow ourselves to imagine other peoples lives or fictional accounts of experiences we wish we can participate in...or not. I prefer non-fiction, but I have been trying to balance my palate as I seem to alternate between biographies of athletes and musicians, graphic novels (and comics), pop culture (music, art, film etc.) and classic novels. Biographies (and auto biographies) fascinate me to explore the story behind the music and the game and this usually leads to more respect for the subject.

I checked Liz Phair's memoir, Horror Stories out the library back in July and finally finished it last week. I read the first couple chapters, and at first found it a difficult to read as memoirs are different from straight-up auto biographies. I renewed the book four times and finally connected with the narrative and cruised through the rest of the book and found it an enjoyable read. This wasn't an ordinary story that bios cover, but she shares stories and experiences of uncomfortable, awkward and dis-empowering moments in her life that most authors avoid when they write about themselves. The writing is honest and unpretentious and a very intimate and unique self-portrait of her life.

(quote from Horror Stories) Horror stories is my effort to slow everything down and take a look at how we really become who we are. It's more than just my personal story. It's about the small indignities we all suffer daily, the silent insult to our system, the callous gestures that we make toward one another. Horror isn't necessarily the big, ghoulish waiting to pounce on you in the dark. Horror can be found in brief interactions that are as cumulatively powerful as the splashy heart-stoppers because that's where we live most of lives.

The stories are interesting, no real order, both chronologically or of importance. Each chapter is a glimpse of a certain episode in her life such as, navigating through a blizzard in NYC, going into labor, blackout in NYC, a crush on a guy that worked at Trader Joe's (who later killed himself) and her #metoo moment. The #metoo chapter is especially interesting because the accused was to produced her next album at the time. They were working on what would have become a double album and then the New York Times published an article about his inappropriate interactions with young female artists, sexual harassment and communicating with an underage girl online. Phair doesn't name him, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out who it is (click to NY Times link). Obviously, the project was scrapped and the album wasn't released.

Since this isn't a book review blog, I'm posting tracks from her Whitechocolatespaceegg sessions. Apparently, there were a lot of tracks recorded and these demos were uncovered by sheer luck with the discovery by a former roommate of some original studio tapes left behind by Jason Chasko, who produced some of the songs on WCSE. (read the notes for a full breakdown of all the tracks in the file). This turned out to be 7 cassettes that the poster purchased and converted the tracks to two CD's. The tracks are fascinating, some are rough mixes, early versions, alternative mixes and unreleased. If you're a fan of demo and session tracks, like I am, this is the holy grail of Liz Phair unreleased tracks. I had earlier posted the original version of WCSE that was rejected by the record label that had to be re-recorded and mixed, so this is a nice companion piece. Extra bonus, these tracks are all lossless!

Minus 5 Or Young Fresh Fellows? Live In Olympia 2022

When I started this blog over sixteen years ago, my goal was to share music that I loved, either by writing about new releases or posting samples of music that I found interesting. Through the years, I've concentrated more on live concert recordings, either something I taped or shows I traded for or downloaded online. This was partly because of the copyright infringement take-down notices and threats of closing the blog down if I didn't comply to their requests. I've had some push-back for some live shows I've posted, but never any complaints from bands or musicians, so I suspect record labels and corporate bullshit is responsible for the "action". When it came time to choose a name for this blog, I wanted it to reflect the type of music I listened to, but not in a super-obvious and predictable way. I chose, Teenage Dogs In Trouble, a song from the Young Fresh Fellow's debut album, that had the coolest (and weirdest) title and it's a great song! So far, I haven't had any complaints from the band (I think, at least Scott knows it exists?) and though this isn't a tribute site or fan page for the Fellows, I do have a love for the band. I've posted some of their live shows in the past and more recently, I've tried to post 'em during the annual TDIT anniversary month (yeah, I know it's not August anymore!).

It's good to see that Scott and some of the other Fellows have been playing live shows and this past summer they played a number of gigs, including a spot opening for NRBQ. Though they are billed as the Minus 5 (aka:Thee Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows 3, the Minus Tad), they are essentially three quarters of the Young Fresh Fellows with Tad sitting out and Kurt filling in on drums. John Ramberg, who is a consistent member of the Minus 5, takes lead guitar and the band sounds great! For the show I'm posting, they play a mixed set of M5/Fellows songs and they open up with the song, Teenage Dogs In Trouble (as a tribute to this blog, no doubt!). Special thanks to HWeinberg who recorded and posted this show originally on Dime and gave me permission to share this show. Thanks!!

Kathleen Edwards- Haddon Heights, NJ, August 24, 2022

For many performers, the pandemic proved to be difficult to stage live concerts with many artists turning to technology, such as live streaming to perform for their fans...and to make a living. A lot of musicians took the time to write new music and record albums giving us plenty of new music to enjoy this past year. This year, saw a return to more "proper" concerts, live in clubs, concert halls and outdoor music festivals bringing fans back and in some cases, more than ever. Personally, besides an afternoon at an outdoor show in August (Harvest Sun Festival in Kelwood, MB), I haven't been to any concerts at an indoor venue. It's not that I'm avoiding going to shows, it's just that I'm being more selective of what I see and if I want to bothered to record a show or not. We'll see, hopefully something that interests me comes to town soon.

One such artist who recorded a new album during the pandemic was Ottawa's, Kathleen Edwards. She released her latest album, Total Freedom in August of 2020 during the lock-down (in some places). The title of the album was unfortunately named, as many people's "freedoms" were compromised at the time, which, of course leads to a whole different conversation. (she jokes in the recording that she has lots of shirts still available) The record release launch was held at her cafe, Quitters Coffee (she no longer owns it) and her performance with her band was live-streamed. She slowly returned to live shows in 2021, mainly outdoor festival-type venues and this year (2022) she has returning to touring and has spent most of the summer and this month playing shows mainly in the States and Ontario. Here's hoping she can make her way across western Canada in the near future!

Fortunately, some live recordings of Kathleen's shows have surfaced and it's good to hear her live again. Thanks to everyone that takes the time to record and post live recordings! I've posted an amazing sounding show recorded at a show in New Jersey that was recorded/posted on Dime by edtyre. He also posted an excellent, professional looking video of the same performance (the photos are screenshots from the video). The newer songs sound great, as she has a relatively different band than in the past and the guy on steel-pedal is outstanding. Well worth the listen (or watch) and I look forward to hearing more recordings from this tour.
Enjoy!

Brinsley Schwarz- Live Archive Vol. 3

Speaking of Nick Lowe, I came upon a great sounding Brinsley Schwarz live recording from the (unofficial) Live Archives series from Vogon in the UK. The two previous Live Archive volumes were from Tilburg, Netherlands and Sheffield from 1974, while Volume 3 is from Groningen in 1975. I haven't heard the first two volumes, so I can't comment about the sound quality, but Volume 3 sounds amazing! If the date of this recording is correct (March 1975), the band would dis-band later in the month, so this is amongst their last shows together. The performance is top notch and features an early working of, Cruel to Be Kind which would become a monster hit for Nick in 1979 from his Labour Of Lust album. I'll keep a look out for the first two volumes! A must-hear for Brinsley Schwarz and Nick Lowe fans!
Enjoy!!

Costello Sings Lowe/Nick Sings Elvis- San Francisco, October 1, 2010: 16 Years Of Trouble!

I have Elvis on my mind! No, not that ancient rocker who had a recent bio-pic about his life in theaters, the Elvis who's married to Canada's, Diana Krall! I saw (via social media), a friend of mine, Hugh, saw Elvis Costello at Massey Hall in Toronto last night. On my daily dose of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die Generator , my featured album today is Elvis Costello's 1994 album, Brutal Youth, with Nick Lowe playing bass on the record. By coincidence, Nick Lowe was the support act (opener) for Costello last night. To add to the coincidences, yesterday (before I realized Costello was performing last night) I listened to a live recording from 2010 that featured Elvis and Nick sharing a co-billing show performing each other's songs. It was a benefit in San Francisco that was recorded, but never officially released and it was available from Dime about a month ago. It's an outstanding show with both Elvis and Nick trading off songs and singing together on a handful of songs. It's a joy to hear them each perform unique versions of the songs that might be arranged different and sound almost like a different song, but they add their own style to each song. A truly unique concert and at the time it was a one-off concept for that night (for both the early & late shows). The sound quality is excellent and the setlist is amazing! Get this while you can!

So sorry for the recent lack of posts. After coming back from vacation, I feel refreshed and energized and looking forward to more postings. Hey, believe it or not, Teenage Dogs In Trouble just celebrated (Aug. 3rd) it's 16th anniversary and I hope to run this into the ground a bit longer. Seriously, I want to thank everyone that has taken the time to read the blog and feel free to continue to download as much content as possible. I realize a lot of older links haven't been working, so keep sending me your requests to re-post. Some items and files I might not have access to anymore, but I will try to dig and get as I can back up.
Enjoy!!

Descendents- Liveage In Winnipeg 1987

Another punk show I missed back in the day was a show from the Descendents, when they came through town in 1987. They were already on my radar and I always enjoyed the band with their high energy melodic punk sound and their debut album, Milo Goes To College still remains as one of my favourite punk albums. I missed them in '87 and I missed them more recently in 2019, so I've had to be content with hearing live recordings of the band. Fortunately, someone taped the show in '87 and this recording has been kicking around for years (and has been sitting on my hard-drive for years, as well) and recently I was reminiscing and gave it another listen. The show in Winnipeg (on July 12th) was the night before the band performed at the First Avenue in Minneapolis where the live album, Liveage! (and some of Hallraker) was recorded. This is a decent sounding audience recording (a YouTube audio recording claims a soundboard, but it's the same recording as this. You be the judge), the band is top form and this show was part of the FinALL tour during the summer of 1987 to support the band's latest album, All and their final tour (at the time) with Milo returning to college for post-graduate studies. The rest of the band would relaunch themselves as ALL, Milo would reunite with the band in 1995 and return to recording and touring under the Descendents name.

The Dickies- Live In Winnipeg 1982

I've always wondered why there wasn't more live albums or unofficial live recordings from my hometown of Winnipeg? It's not like this is a international hot-bed of a music scene, but I'm always hoping there is a live recording of the show I attended because it's an unique souvenir and a cool document of an enjoyable (most of the time) concert experience. Since the mid-90's, with the exception of a few shows, I've attempted to record the shows I attended, most successful, others not-so-good, but I'm always glad I did so I could relive the show, especially with the bands I love. Since I've been taping, I haven't seen many other recordings of the same shows I have taped, so my recordings might be the only audio evidence of the show and I've only seen a few other recordings from a handful of tapers from the city. There are some recordings out there from before I taped and there were a lot of great concerts I wished I had a recording of, so I'm always on the lookout for shows I did attend. Anyways, in an ideal world I'd like to have recordings of all the concerts I've seen and shows I wish I saw.

A live recording of a Dickies show caught my attention because it was recorded in Winnipeg at Wellingtons, a club where I've seen many great punk shows. It's a small venue in the scuzzy basement of the St. Charles Hotel in the exchange district in downtown Winnipeg. This was recorded off the soundboard, so the sound quality is excellent and the setlist is a mix of originals and covers that appeared on their earlier albums. The Dickies would have been a fun band to see live with some entertaining banter from Leonard, singer from the band, but when this was recorded I was still too young to go bars (and I wasn't into punk yet), so I'm very happy someone recorded this! There is some discrepancy about the date of the concert. On this UK version (released in 2021), the hype sticker says, "live at the Wellingtons, Winnipeg 1982, an earlier German version from 1992 of the same recording says it was recorded December 15th, 1986. According to setlist.fm, it lists the same show/venue (same songs anyways) on 2 different dates (December 15, 1983 & 1986), but according to (the late great local music blog!) Music Ruined My Life, he has it "on authority" from people that actually got into the bar that this is the 1982 show- the only time in the eighties the Dickies played here. So there you have it...Live in Winnipeg 1982!

The Replacements- Live at the Longhorn 1980

This past Record Store Day, I only made one purchase, The Replacements, Unsuitable Airplay: The Lost KFAI Concert which I was lucky to pickup at my local bookstore/vinyl record retailer. I know the recording was included with the Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash deluxe CD box set a year or so ago, but I haven't gotten around to buying that yet and it's cool to have this live show on vinyl. The sound is incredible and it's a treat for Mats fans to hear the band's early shows (circa, Sorry Ma...) when they were relatively tight and less drunk. It got me thinking about some other early Replacements shows I had on cassette and through Dime, some suffer from some tape hiss and noise, but most sound pretty good and are worth exploring again.

I found one of their earliest known live recordings (on Dime recently) and it's an amazingly good sounding recording, possibly soundboard and supposedly, this show was about 2 months after Paul Westerberg handed future manager Peter Jesperson a four-song demo. The band opened for The Dads at The Longhorn which included three songs that would wind up on the debut album. The rest of the set was covers that really showed off who their influences were (The Kinks, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers) and though it's a short set, they played with confidence and showed they were ready for bigger and better things. This has been available on the Color Me Impressed: The Replacements Live Archive, but the version I have here is uncompressed and the setlist seems to have a few more songs (is that right?). Anyways, this is essential for Mats fans!
Enjoy!

Muffs- Live At Rhino Pop Up Store, Los Angeles 2011

It's been about two and half years since Kim Shattuck of the Muffs passed away after a battle with ALS and I was thinking of her last week while listening to some Muffs. I always thought their first two albums were their best, but in reality all their releases are worth a listen and for the completest, their comp, Hamburger is an excellent overview of the first phase of their career (up until 2000 or so). I miss her patented scream and energetic stage presence, as they were a great live band and I regret never seeing the Muffs live, but at least through YouTube and live recordings you can still experience hearing and watching them perform.

To continue the theme of record store shows, the Muffs played at a Rhino Pop Up Store in L.A. a bit over ten years ago and it's a good example how good a band can sound at an in-store performance. I just remembered I had this show and had to do some digging to find it and it was one of those burned discs I only wrote minimal information for. At least, I have the date and the venue info, but unfortunately I don't have the setlist of songs. I know some of the songs, but I don't have the energy to complete the list. If anyone can help out and identify the song titles, that would be greatly appreciated! (edit: we now have a setlist!) The sound quality is crisp, clear and sounds amazing. Celebrate Record Store Day with the late, great Muffs!
Enjoy!

Grant Hart, Bob Mould, Dave Pirner- Live At Garage D'or Records 1985

Saturday, April 23rd is Record Store Day 2022. In addition, there will be a RSD drop date on June 18th for releases that couldn't make it into to stores in April. I expect things will be close to normal with events, sales and maybe live performance in the the actual store. Personally, there aren't a lot of releases that I need to rush out and buy and in some ways the RSD releases are over-rated. Items are over-priced and they create a false demand with small limited runs and exclusive releases. A few titles interest me, but a majority of the records are re-issues and items previously not available on vinyl. I love the idea of Record Store Day to bring awareness that record stores are still in operation and need you support to stay open, especially after the pandemic. It's also a great excuse to get out of the house (or apartment etc.) to do some record browsing, which is definitely my favourite habit! I might peruse a store or two on Saturday to help support my local stores...you should too! 😉 (Record Store Day Canada)

One of the things that Record Store Days has brought back is live performances. I remember a time when record stores would have more live in-store shows. It may have been a band on tour and the day of the show would play the local record store to promote their latest release and to remind people they have a concert that night. Sometimes the band will cram into a small store with full gear, while other times an acoustic unplugged show is more appropriate. Some larger stores (Tower Records Amoeba), have a mini-concerts with big names as draws while customers continue to browse the stacks. In honor of RSD, I have a cool in-store show from Garage D'or Records in Minneapolis, featuring a trio of local rock heroes from two legendary Twin Cities bands. Grant Hart and Bob Mould from Husker Du and David Pirner from Soul Asylum did a rare acoustic set inside the store. At this time, Husker Du had released, Flip Your Wig a couple months earlier and Soul Asylum's second album, Made To Be Broken would be released the next month. By coincidence, Bob produced Made To Be Broken, so he and Dave have been working together around this time. Interesting setlist with some covers, a couple of Husker Du songs, a Soul Asylum song and Grant Hart performing 2541, a song that would see light years later after Husker Du broke up on his first solo EP in 1988 and re-recorded for his debut album, Intolerance in 1989. Really wish I could have been there!
