Kathleen Edwards- Haddon Heights, NJ, August 24, 2022

For many performers, the pandemic proved to be difficult to stage live concerts with many artists turning to technology, such as live streaming to perform for their fans...and to make a living. A lot of musicians took the time to write new music and record albums giving us plenty of new music to enjoy this past year. This year, saw a return to more "proper" concerts, live in clubs, concert halls and outdoor music festivals bringing fans back and in some cases, more than ever. Personally, besides an afternoon at an outdoor show in August (Harvest Sun Festival in Kelwood, MB), I haven't been to any concerts at an indoor venue. It's not that I'm avoiding going to shows, it's just that I'm being more selective of what I see and if I want to bothered to record a show or not. We'll see, hopefully something that interests me comes to town soon.

One such artist who recorded a new album during the pandemic was Ottawa's, Kathleen Edwards. She released her latest album, Total Freedom in August of 2020 during the lock-down (in some places). The title of the album was unfortunately named, as many people's "freedoms" were compromised at the time, which, of course leads to a whole different conversation. (she jokes in the recording that she has lots of shirts still available) The record release launch was held at her cafe, Quitters Coffee (she no longer owns it) and her performance with her band was live-streamed. She slowly returned to live shows in 2021, mainly outdoor festival-type venues and this year (2022) she has returning to touring and has spent most of the summer and this month playing shows mainly in the States and Ontario. Here's hoping she can make her way across western Canada in the near future!

Fortunately, some live recordings of Kathleen's shows have surfaced and it's good to hear her live again. Thanks to everyone that takes the time to record and post live recordings! I've posted an amazing sounding show recorded at a show in New Jersey that was recorded/posted on Dime by edtyre. He also posted an excellent, professional looking video of the same performance (the photos are screenshots from the video). The newer songs sound great, as she has a relatively different band than in the past and the guy on steel-pedal is outstanding. Well worth the listen (or watch) and I look forward to hearing more recordings from this tour.
Enjoy!

Kathleen Edwards- UK interview 2003

Back at the beginning of the year (January 1, to be exact), someone on the Kathleen Edwards Fans page on Facebook posted a link to an eBay auction selling an interview cassette of Kathleen Edwards recorded in 2003. The poster suggested there must be a die-hard fan that would want this unique item and hinted maybe Kathleen herself would want it. Long story short, I bought the item and with shipping it cost the equivalent of about $20 cdn, so it wasn't a huge gamble. Just over a month later the cassette arrived (it shipped from the UK) and it took me another couple weeks to have a listen. I directly transferred the recording to my digital recorder as I listened and despite the typical cassette hum it sounded good. One problem was that almost all the sound was to one channel, which I fixed after the transfer to produce a listenable mono recording (see below).

The interview is fascinating, it is a raw interview with just the interviewer and Kathleen and is clearly intended for a written publication, as opposed to a radio interview. The sounds from the street (cars, sirens etc.) are audible, (probably the window was open) and it's a candid interview discussing her new album, Failer and other interesting subjects. This interview cassette was from the collection of a journalist for "The Face" and "Arena" magazines UK based style, culture and music magazines. Later, he was a correspondent for the "Sunday Times". Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the journalist or where this interview ended up appearing, if at all. If anyone has a clue or any further information, please let me know. Shortly after listening to this tape about a month ago, I attempted to reach out to Kathleen (through Instagram) regarding this recording. I was hoping she might provide more insight, more details surrounding the circumstances and the exact date of the interview. (I'm still waiting for a response) I'm guessing the date is sometime around May 7th (?) since she was touring the UK around this time and playing London on the 7th and in the interview she mentions playing on the Late Night With David Letterman TV show earlier in the year (January 17), so we know it's the right year.

On the cassette tape, the audio was all to one channel (L). I used Audacity to convert the poor "stereo" to mono so the sound was equal on both channels and amplified the volume to compensate. A much more pleasant listening experience! I don't usually post audio interviews, but Kathleen Edwards is a favourite of mine and I find this piece of nostalgia offers added insight into her early career and it is worth sharing with her fans and the readers of the blog.
Enjoy!

Kathleen Edwards Album Release Concert- Live At Quitters Coffee 2020

Welcome back Kathleen Edwards!

It's been eight long years since Edwards released her last album, Voyageur and though she took a break from music, both performing and recording, things have seem to come full circle. Quitting music to open her own coffee shop called (fittingly), Quitters, Kathleen presented her new album, Total Freedom in it's entirety (almost) at Quitters on the date of it's official release. How appropriate! The new album is excellent, I received the limited gold vinyl version earlier in the week and like I did with her last record I opted for a signed copy.

The album release show was performed inside Quitters Coffee without an audience (a crowd watched on screens in the parking lot of the cafe), but was live streamed through a variety of platforms including Facebook, Amazon, Twitch and YouTube. It pays off sometimes being a "stay at home" artist-type so I can take in live events that are broadcast during the day, similarly to NHL playoff games. I made the mistake of trusting YouTube to watch from and was horrified to find there was no sound when the show started. I quickly switched to the World Cafe's stream on FB and missed half the first song. When the show ended I re-watched the whole thing again to record the audio. The concert is a great watch, the audio and video is perfect and seeing the band perform up close and personal makes it feel like you're there in person. YouTube finally got their shit together and the video of the show was back online. Edit: it was, now it's not. hmmm...? (I will update this if the video becomes available again!)

The album release setlist is pretty straightforward, perform side 1 in order, then an interview with the World Cafe's, Raina Douris, then side 2 (except for the last song on the album). As a bonus Kathleen and her band round out the set with Goodnight California (from Asking For Flowers), Six O'clock News (from Failer) and a Neil Young cover, Comes A Time. Kathleen performs solo for the closer, Sweet Little Duck (Failer). It's always a treat to have a Kathleen Edwards concert to help celebrate anniversary month on TDIT. Last year, if you're keeping track, I posted an Edward's small venue show from 2010 originally posted on the hater-high live music blog. Good news, Jason is back online with new posts and is in the process of getting some of his archives back up and re-posted for download. Welcome back!

Get this while you can, in case it disappears! And buy the album!
Enjoy!

Whoa, It's Been Thirteen Years Of Trouble!! Day One: Kathleen Edwards

Yes, it's true. Teenage Dogs In Trouble is still going strong after celebrating 13 years of being online earlier this month. Despite the lack of posts so far in 2019, I'm hoping to make up for it with more frequent posts for the rest of the calendar year. Similar to last year's #12daysoftrouble challenge, I'm going to attempt to make 13 posts in the next 13 days! To be realistic (who am I kidding!), this will not happen, but I do hope to complete this within the next month, so I will write, day 1, day 2, day 3...for each of the thirteen posts mainly to personally keep track and as incentive I'm going to make it.

Every year in early July, I agonize whether or not to attend the annual Winnipeg Folk Festival. Nowadays, even though I love music and watching musicians perform it usually takes a lot of convincing or some interesting acts to get me to make the trek. This year I have some regrets because Kathleen Edwards performed on the last night of the festival and according to people I have talked to it was a fine performance. She has been in the studio recording, so I think a new album will be coming soon and I haven't seen Kathleen live for several years so I hope to have the opportunity soon with luck in an indoor venue within driving distance. If you're familiar with this blog, you know I'm a huge supporter of Kathleen's music and I can never have enough live recordings of hers.

A very good source of Kathleen Edwards live shows was a music blog I followed called, blog.haterhigh.com. Unfortunately, the blog is no longer online, but Jason who operated the blog had tons of excellent concerts he recorded including 11 Edwards shows for download. This site was one of my favourite live concert blogs, not only because he shared lots of local (Toronto) shows, but because he wrote a very detailed description of his recording experience including the equipment he used, where he recorded from and his interaction with people that attended and performed. To top it off he is Canadian and it's refreshing to read something written by someone so passionate about the music. I don't know the circumstances of why the blog is no longer around, so if anyone knows Jason or familiar with the blog I would love to find out why. Through the magic of the Internet Wayback Machine (archive.org), you can read the archived screenshots of webpages. The download links do not work, but fortunately I downloaded all the KE shows before the site went down, and I don't think they are presently being shared anywhere else.

The show I'm sharing is from the haterhigh site and it's an intimate, unique show that sounds amazing. To best describe the concert here's an excerpt from the taper stolen ripped off from haterhigh.com:

In the first night of a once-weekly residency series of shows at the Drake Hotel (Underground), Kathleen Edwards debuted some brand new songs for the loving Toronto crowd, paced through some old favourites and finished off with a welcome cover. The sound was absolutely phenomenal, allowing the band’s performance to shine brightly through. The intimate Drake Underground encourages a strange, respectful silence amongst the rapt crowd, reserving their loud enthusiasm for between-song applause and the curtain call.

And the crowd had a reason to be enthusiastic on this night. Kathleen brought a new band and a batch of new songs, but her same old inimitable self. Good news! All of the above were great!

I was initially disappointed not to see Kathleen sharing the stage with local legend Colin Cripps, but Gord Tough filled his large, clown-like shoes admirably. The rhythm section was also superbly on point, and was perhaps one of the tightest sets I’ve seen performed in some time. The new songs sounded as fleshed-out as nearly decade-old favourites, and show a powerful strength and confidence that hint at phenomenal follow-up record to 2008’s acclaimed Asking For Flowers LP.

Additionally, it's interesting to note that some of the early performances of songs that would eventually appear on her next album, Voyageur sound quite different than on the studio album. In particular, Chameleon/Comedian (Chameleon) is missing the "Punchline" chorus and Change The Sheets (Change) is much more rock and upbeat. In some ways I prefer the rawer early versions to the slicker sounding album versions. These residency shows are an opportunity for the band to work out the new songs live and an extra special treat for fans to hear the transformation of the songs taking shape. The band does sound surprisingly tight and the atmosphere has a relaxed and intimate vibe to it that makes this a very special recording. Thanks so much Jason!
Enjoy!

Kathleen Edwards- Utrecht, Netherlands April 26, 2003

When some people walk away from a career in music, they may explore other endeavors in the arts such as art, film or writing. Others may want to stay connected with the music scene, manage bands, host a radio show or open a bar or pub to double as a small venue to play whenever they feel like it (I'm thinking maybe someone like Jeff Healey) and drink for free. Others want to settle down in their hometown away from the spotlight and the rigours of touring to open and run a cafe called, quite fittingly, Quitters Coffee. Quitters isn't just a cafe, it's also a place to eat for lunch with events in the evening (theme trivia nights, Sens games on the tube) and a cozy great place to hang out in the suburb of Ottawa, Stittsville. If I live in or around Ottawa, I would seriously be a regular customer. If there's anyone I would like to have barista the shit out of my latte, it would be Kathleen Edwards.

Always humble and always a proud ambassador for Canada, Kathleen Edwards has been of a favourite of mine since first hearing songs from her debut album, Failer. Who names their debut album, Failer? (well...the Posie's debut album, Failure, for one) Seems doomed from the beginning fight? But if you've followed Kathleen's career, you come to know her sense of humour and casual self deprivating personality that truly separates her from the pack. When you're at a Kathleen Edwards show you always feel welcome, entertained by her off-cuff comments and it's a pleasure to spend the next hour or so in her presence.

In reality, Edwards is only stepping back from music, just a bit. In the past year, she has played more than a handful of gigs in and around Ottawa and was noticeably visual during the Junos (see the video on the TDIT Facebook page) this past spring in Ottawa and more importantly (at least to me anyways) she performed during a visit from Rogers Hometown hockey on March 19th. Hearing that Kathleen has played more gigs this year than previous years, it's a good positive sign she is more interested in performing more and who knows, maybe recording a new album wouldn't be out of the question. Not being controlled by a record label or pr agencies much be a refreshing change when you've spend a majority of your adult life dedicated to music. It's like pressing the pause button, taking a look around you and discover what is really important in life and pressing the refresh button to pursue what feels right. There are many veteran artists that have bypassed record labels and independently released music with the help of crowd sourcing sites and their fans (Juliana Hatfield for one) and recording from their home studios (Paul Westerberg). I could see in the near future, Kathleen possibly pursuing this route that allows her to control the process so she can make music on her terms. Fingers crossed!

This summer when I was preparing (downloading/ripping) music for my annual roadtrip, I added Kathleen Edward's, Failer to my iPod. I've had this on CD for years, but since it wasn't on the pod I hadn't listened to it as much as her other albums that were previously ripped. I must admit I listened to that album more than anything else all summer and rediscovering it's brilliance was wonderful. I was recently digging around my live KE shows and found a number of shows from earlier in her career. The show I'm posting is her second ever show in Europe and it showcases songs from the Failer era and like most artists, songs that aren't performed regularly anymore. When someone in the crowd requests, Hockey Skates, she responds that this is probably the only song they know. Does she underestimate her fanbase or is she right? The "hit" single might in fact be the only song they would recognize. Anyways, the sound in this recording is remarkable and as the notes indicate, I'm not sure if this was a radio broadcast, soundboard or audience recording. It's a good one and if you like her early stuff, this is a must hear. As a bonus, there's an interview and in-studio performance of Independent Thief at the end.

I know Quitters is only the name of her cafe and it's all tongue n' cheek fun, but trust me she'll be back. If you're in or around Ottawa or better yet, Stittsville, drop into Quitters Coffee and say hi to Kathleen Edwards from TDIT.
Enjoy!

Kathleen Edwards- Garrick Centre September 29, 2012

When Kathleen Edwards postponed her show back in April I was sadly disappointed. I saw her at the Winnipeg Folk Festival a couple years back, but sitting in a large field far back from the stage isn't the experience I want to remember Kathleen Edwards by. A few weeks ago, there was a report that she suffered Anaphylactic shock from a wasp sting following a show in Windsor, but fortunately she recovered and didn't have to cancel or postpone any shows. Phew!

An opportunity to see her in a medium/small (indoor) venue, not as an opener, but as a headliner up-close is much more preferred. I probably have more live recordings from her than anyone else, except maybe Wilco and though I sound obsessed I don't feel a urgent need to see her live multiple multiple times. This show filled the bill, I stood dead centre on the floor with a good view of the stage and in the sweet spot for sound, so I was happy. Though I like to complain about the Garrick Centre as being a crappy venue, I must admit it has it's good points. The Garrick is a former movie theatre and it's hall is divided into two sections. The floor (closest to the stage) has had it's seats removed and since it was a theatre the floor slopes up away from the stage. If you can stand the feeling of leaning forward with your feet pushed to front of your shoes, you are treated to a good view because you are elevated on a incline. Beneficial for short people, like myself who have a hard time seeing when tall guys push their way in front of me. The second half of the venue is the seated area (think, movie theatre seating) with one aisle up the middle, usually for the older folks that don't want to stand or care to be close. The sound was better than other shows I've been to there, but it might have been my positioning and there were still signs of that boomy, "big hall sound" because the acoustics in this building are not suited for concerts.

Here are some other thoughts and observations about the concert (I do love point-form!):
  • Interesting to see what type of crowd Kathleen Edwards draws. There seemed to be a lot of "white-hairs" in the crowd especially in the seated section. There wasn't any empty seats up there, while the floor was unusually sparse and not crowded. There was still a good number of college-age kids and middle-agers like me, but there were a lot of old people and the best way to describe it would be a "folk fest" type crowd...which is cool, of course!
  • Before performing Human Touch (Bruce Springsteen cover) together, Jen Grant (opener) walked down the stairs from the back of the hall to the stage giving away copies of a book Kathleen had read and enjoyed called, Above All Things by Tanis Rideout. She got multiple copies from the writer and she was going to give some away during her shows, complete with a trivia question. Cross promotion...?
  • Hockey Skates was performed with only Gord Tough and Jim Bryson on guitars. The trio is touring through the U.S. this month (including Fargo tonight).
  • 8 of the 17 songs performed were from her latest album, Voyageur. Only one song from Back To Me (Back To Me) and four from Failer.
  • During the first encore song, Sidecar, Kathleen and Jim Bryson performed unplugged with one mic for their vocals and 2 acoustic guitars. Though I wasn't standing too far from the stage, on the recording the sound is soft, so crank up the volume for that one song to hear it.
Overall the recording sounds fine and because I wasn't squeezed by people tightly around me, the crowd chatter isn't too bad. I took lots of photos, but as usual I took a lot of blurry ones so the clearest are the ones I'm posting. Generally Kathleen Edwards is cool with live taping so feel free to trade and share the show (NO selling!!). I'll probably post this on Dime soon, but I wanted to share it here first!
Enjoy!

Kathleen Edwards- Live In Philly 2008

Photo by Frailamerica Just returned from Ottawa and I must apologize for not posting anything while I was there. I was too busy checking out all the typical Ottawa tourist sites such as, the National Gallery, Canadian Museum Of Civilization, Parliament Hill, Scotiabank Place (to see a Senators hockey game) and the local record stores (Vertigo Records and Compact Music). When I go to another city I always try to seize the opportunity to see a band, but unfortunately I didn't see anything of interest in town, unless you count the Crash Test Dummies and of course, I won't! When I think of Ottawa all I can think of is Furnaceface and Kathleen Edwards. I have a whole bunch of Kathleen Edwards shows, but I came upon this good one the other day that is short, but sweet. It's from her 2008 tour, about a month before I saw her at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and it was broadcast on WXPN and posted at the NPR website. It sounds great and features just Kathleen and band member Jim Bryson (another Ottawa native). The reason the set is so short is because it was part of Philadelphia's NON-COMMvention, a showcase for non-commercial radio programmers and music industry professionals and also because Kathleen was opening for both Alejandro Escovedo and Jakob Dylan. Before She Was Famous- Kathleen Edwards

I just got back from dropping Jesse off at the airport for his 7am flight to Ottawa. He and the team (Kelvin High School) he co-coaches are competing this week for the Canadian Improv games. This competition gathers together all the top teams from across Canada to Ottawa to vie for the coveted crown of national high school improv champs. If you're not familiar with improv as a sport or want more info check improv.ca. As a tribute, I thought I would post something from Ottawa native Kathleen Edwards, who I'm sure you know is a favourite here at TDIT. For my 5:30am drive to the airport I played Kathleen's, Failer CD which upon further reflection might not have been the best choice for luck's sake considering he was going to a competition. (As a related note, I think Six O'clock News and 12 Bellevue are two of her best songs!) Back before Failer, which was released in 2003, Edwards recorded a six song EP entitled, Building 55 and pressed 500 copies. I had not heard of this disc until I was reading her Wikipedia page and I quickly sought out this previously unheard piece of music. This very limited disc must be a collectors item and I would like to own a physical copy, but a little searching on music blogs with the help of search engine, Captain Crawl (which as of a couple of days is not running), I was able to find Building 55. Not a bad first effort, her voice is more raw and gruff, but the sound quality and playing is passionate and inspiring. Most of the songs are exclusive to this release, except for track 7, which was re-recorded and re-titled Westby when it appeared on Failer 4 years later. I like the EP, it's not glossed over and slickly produced and this is a good introduction to her music. It's really more of interest for established fans that want to hear how she hasn't veered too far from her original vision or taken on any other identities or personas. Newbies should really start at Failer, Back to Me and Asking For Flowers, all outstanding albums. KATHLEEN EDWARDS Building 55 (1999)
