Dinosaur Jr.- BBC: In Session

With the release of their latest album, Sweep It Into Space this past April, Dinosaur Jr has continued to record quality new material into their fifth decade of recording. Yes, it's kind of a shocker the band has been around this long, but there was an eight year hiatus in the middle of their career (original breakup 1997) and officially the band has been together longer the second time around since they reformed in 2005. Adding to that is that the original lineup of J, Lou and Murph were only together for the first 3 albums and since reuniting these three have now recorded 5 albums. I have seen Dinosaur Jr twice live, the first time in 1997 close to end of the first time before J retired the Dino name and later when the band reformed I saw them in 2007. For the 1997 show, J was the only original band member and what I remember about the show was that they seemed to be going through the motions. The performance lacked a spark or energy and where I was standing at the First Avenue in Minneapolis the sound sucked. In 2007, the band was touring their first album with the original lineup since Bug, Beyond (it's a great record!) and the performance was much fresher and enjoyable. J isn't known to be a flashy performer as he was flanked by his massive wall of amps, but Lou Barlow gave the band energy that is sadly missed without him and the band gave a solid performance in a smaller, more intimate venue.

The album, In Session is 10 tracks from in-studio sessions on the BCC that capture the band during the earlier part of their career. Two tracks (7 & 10), are from 1992 without Barlow and Murph, but the bulk of the tracks date to 1988-89. Great versions of these songs live, though they don't sound too much different than the studio album versions, but it is treat to hear the band live with such good studio quality live sound. Short, but sweet!
Enjoy!

Kathleen Edwards- UK interview 2003

Back at the beginning of the year (January 1, to be exact), someone on the Kathleen Edwards Fans page on Facebook posted a link to an eBay auction selling an interview cassette of Kathleen Edwards recorded in 2003. The poster suggested there must be a die-hard fan that would want this unique item and hinted maybe Kathleen herself would want it. Long story short, I bought the item and with shipping it cost the equivalent of about $20 cdn, so it wasn't a huge gamble. Just over a month later the cassette arrived (it shipped from the UK) and it took me another couple weeks to have a listen. I directly transferred the recording to my digital recorder as I listened and despite the typical cassette hum it sounded good. One problem was that almost all the sound was to one channel, which I fixed after the transfer to produce a listenable mono recording (see below).

The interview is fascinating, it is a raw interview with just the interviewer and Kathleen and is clearly intended for a written publication, as opposed to a radio interview. The sounds from the street (cars, sirens etc.) are audible, (probably the window was open) and it's a candid interview discussing her new album, Failer and other interesting subjects. This interview cassette was from the collection of a journalist for "The Face" and "Arena" magazines UK based style, culture and music magazines. Later, he was a correspondent for the "Sunday Times". Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the journalist or where this interview ended up appearing, if at all. If anyone has a clue or any further information, please let me know. Shortly after listening to this tape about a month ago, I attempted to reach out to Kathleen (through Instagram) regarding this recording. I was hoping she might provide more insight, more details surrounding the circumstances and the exact date of the interview. (I'm still waiting for a response) I'm guessing the date is sometime around May 7th (?) since she was touring the UK around this time and playing London on the 7th and in the interview she mentions playing on the Late Night With David Letterman TV show earlier in the year (January 17), so we know it's the right year.

On the cassette tape, the audio was all to one channel (L). I used Audacity to convert the poor "stereo" to mono so the sound was equal on both channels and amplified the volume to compensate. A much more pleasant listening experience! I don't usually post audio interviews, but Kathleen Edwards is a favourite of mine and I find this piece of nostalgia offers added insight into her early career and it is worth sharing with her fans and the readers of the blog.
Enjoy!

Joe Jackson Band- Early Live concert 1978: Day 12

Sometimes some shows are too good to pass up to post on the blog. A live recording from an early Joe Jackson was upped on Dime last month and though I have many JJ live recordings with better sound quality, the historical significance intrigued me. This is the fourth ever gig by the Joe Jackson Band taped in their hometown of Portsmouth about a month after their the first ever show (also in Portsmouth). They had just completed recording sessions for the debut album, Look Sharp! which wasn't released until January 1979 and the debut single, Is She Really Going Out With Him? didn't release until October. This means the audience of the early shows wouldn't have had any prior knowledge of the material Joe Jackson and band performed until much later and Look Sharp! would go on to become one of the great debut albums of the 70's. Personally, Look Sharp! and the follow-up album, I'm The Man were records that changed my (music) life because at the time I was still mainly listening to the Beatles, Elton John, the Stones and other mainstream rock radio. It wasn't really punk, nor was it slick FM MOR mush, instead it was the beginning of "new wave" that could include piano and keyboards without sounding Prog or Electronic. It was cool with the thin ties, wrap around sunglasses, short hair, the skinny pants that helped to form the look and sound of new wave. This led to discovering similar sounding music such as Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, XTC, Squeeze, Talking Heads and many others.

I had the privilege of seeing the original Joe Jackson Band during their Volume 4/reunion tour in early 2003 and was very impressed how tight and great they sounded. I haven't been able to get into much of the other musical styles he has pursued during his long musical career, but I respect he can explore and move forward musically, but stay humble and still perform his older material. With this early concert in Portsmouth in 1978, the songs sound fresh, but don't sound too different than on the debut album. He has already shaped his sound and the quality of musicianship of the band members (Sanford, Maby and Houghton) are already evident. Though the sound quality isn't perfect, (this is an audience recording from the 70's) it is what it is and I feel fortunate this has seen the light of day, an important live recording from the Joe Jackson Band. A special thanks to Martin A. for sharing this gem with us fans, to the original taper Tony Fitzpatrick, and to Andreas for sound improvements.
Enjoy!

David Bowie- Hemel Hempstead 1972 R.I.P.

It's been almost 2 months since the untimely passing of David Bowie. During that time, many reminisced, remembered and listened to his music. There were tribute concerts, tribute albums and cover versions of his songs performed. For me, it was an opportunity to rediscover his music and though I listen his music frequently, especially the early 70's Ziggy-era, I thought I should branch off and deluge deeper into his vast discography. I actually only have a handful of his live recordings (which I will seek out more of), and I had the opportunity of seeing Mr. Bowie live during the Serious Moonlight Tour and the Glass Spider tour.

One of the shows I had before Bowie's death was this fine sounding recording from 1972. The sound is a little rough to start, but improves soon after. I downloaded this from Dime many years ago. I meant to post this a couple days after Bowie's passing, but never completed this post until now. I've included the text from the original upload for a little more background on this recording. Enjoy!

Here is the text of the original upload:
This show is one of the most sought after. It was rumoured to be around in "certain circles" for quite a long time and only one song was open to a wider public until now: Gotta Get A Job. So I was really excited when I got it in a trade not so long ago. There will follow a remaster which will be uploaded later.

The show itself is really great and soundwise it is close to the Kingston Polytechnic from one day earlier. It is a bit annoying that there are cuts between the songs but there always things to complain about. It's simply another great document of the early Ziggy phase with powerful versions of Moonage Daydream (David shouting all his passion out) or Waiting For The Man with a mind-blowing guitar solo of Mick Ronson.

I have attached a really nice cover I found on the Bowiesleeveart web page. Unfortunately no longer publically accessible.

Also he performs some tracks only present in the early Ziggy phase like I Feel Free or Gotta Get A Job/Hot Pants.
