Paul McCartney- Jimmy Kimmel Live! September 23, 2013 (Welcome Back!)

It's been an interesting week if you're still a fan of late night talk show hosts and the issue of free speech in America. I'm going to keep this post brief, without offering my opinions about politics and since I'm from Canada, I'll keep my mouth shut.

Anyways, you know the story. Jimmy Kimmel says stuff, his show is suspended indefinitely due to the alleged content of some of the stuff said, but mainly because of other "reasons", the supreme leader is pleased, the other certain portion of the public is outraged, many Disney streaming subscriptions are cancelled, money is lost!! oh oh...ABC announces Kimmel will be back on-air on Tuesday, September 23rd! Funny how the system works, eh?

By coincidence, Paul McCartney performed on the Jimmy Kimmel show exactly 12 years ago. I thought the timing was too perfect to pass up to post the complete live recording from the show (posted on Dime today). The sound quality is broadcast soundboard, even though it's bootleg. Take note, this is the audio-only portion, as the boot included a DVD of the performance. (clear sign it's a boot is the spelling error on the cover, unacceptable!) 'Nuff said.
Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Elvis Costello- WHO CARES Benefit 2013

Since I mentioned what would have been Joe Strummer's 68th birthday last post, a very happy birthday to Elvis Costello who turns 66 today. For a guy who has entered senior citizen territory, he still tours endlessly (even live streaming performances during COVID) and still consistently releases new music. His latest upcoming album, Hey Clockface has October 30th as the release date.

Back in 2013, Elvis Costello and the Imposters along with the Who performed an intimate concert, WHO CARES Benefit in New York City to benefit Teen Cancer America and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Elvis and the Imposters blazed through a 45 minute set consisting of a setlist of songs from 1980 and earlier (except, Everyday I Write The Book (1983)). This live recording will be a real treat for fans of Elvis's earlier material as he and the band knock off hit after hit and to top it off they do an incredible cover of the Who's classic, Substitute. It's an amazing concert, definitely among my favourite Elvis shows from the past 30 years or so. Thank you to the taper of the show, the sound quality is decent and there is some crowd noise, but it doesn't distract from the music and performance. Well worth a listen!
Enjoy!

Minus 5- Livin' It Up At The Hotel California 2013

Back on March 24, 2020, the music world lost another great musician, drummer Bill Rieflin who died of cancer at the age of 59. Caught up in the confusion and panic of the COVI-19 epidemic during that time, I didn't properly give tribute to Rieflin who played on many recordings I own and was a member of some pretty fabulous bands. He is best known for his work with Ministry, the Revolting Cocks, Swans, KMFDM, King Crimson and as a auxiliary member of REM. His connection with Scott McCaughey began when McCaughey (on short notice) needed a drummer to play a Minus 5 show in January 2000. This led Riefkin to play alongside McCaughey and Peter Buck (from REM) in many projects including (and maybe more?) the Minus 5, Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3, Peter Buck (the band) and Filthy Friends. In a touching piece, Our Musical Friend from Scott on the Minus 5 website he wrote, "I've gotta say Bill would be amused by all the kind and glowing things being said about him right now.  Don't get me wrong -- they are all deserved -- but those of us who knew him, would know also that he saw himself as a cantankerous, not-suffering-fools type of guy.  And it's true; Bill could seem difficult, off-putting at first, though he was also weirdly exceptionally polite.  He was an ambiguous combination of iconoclast on one hand, and a mannered, considerate gentile on the other."

Thanks to the combined efforts of Peter Buck and his wife and Journal Del Pacifico, they launched the Todos Santos Music Festival in January 2012. Many of the bands that performed for the first couple years were bands closely associated with Buck including many, the Baseball Project, Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 and the Minus 5 he was a member of. This sounds like the perfect way to spend a chilly cold winter in January up in Canada watching great music in sunny hot Mexico. This Minus 5 set was recorded during the second annual edition of the festival and other bands (other than the bands mentioned earlier) that performed during the 2013 festival included, the Posies, Chuck Prophet,  Alejandro Escovedo, Joseph Arthur and others. The Minus 5 set is a fun mix of M5 "hits" and some very cool covers (I Can't Explain!) and they never disappoint. Fantastic sound, I don't have the source information, I'm sure I downloaded it on Dime, but I deleted the files and fortunately I had burned a disc years so this is ripped from that disc. This is a good one!
Enjoy!

Replacements- Riot Fest, Toronto, August 25, 2013

I know it's old news and you've probably already read the reviews, seen the videos and heard the recordings from the Replacements "reunion" show at Riot Fest a few weeks back, but I thought I would give an opportunity for those that missed out to still listen to this amazing concert. As far as I know, there are three live audience recordings circulating (yup, I downloaded all three), two that were posted on Dime in lossless and all three at the Replacements Live Archive Project on Facebook in mp3 and on the blog version.

On the weekend of August 24-25, I was on the West Coast attending a family reunion while across the country in Toronto, Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg reunited on stage together (along with Dave Minehan and Josh Freese) for a smoking set of Replacements classics. While many refuse to acknowledge this to be a real Replacements reunion without half the original band, it was a treat to hear Paul Westerberg perform a full set of Replacements songs instead of a small sampling during his solo shows. I'm such a huge fan of Westerberg and Stinson I would see them with or without each other, but to hear the Mats songs, especially the early material is a bonus. Wish I could attend Chicago next week or Denver later in the month, but I'm holding out hope they play a Minneapolis concert in the near future, I guarantee I'll be there!

3 versions at the Live Archive Project (mp3) (links within)
  1. Mechanical Forest Sound (MFS) source (also check out MFS's great blog!)
  2. Scudder source
  3. NAC source
Since sound quality is subjective, especially for audience recordings I can't tell you which one to download. They all have their charms and highs and lows.

Versions 1 and 2 were also posted on Dime in FLAC format. If you don't have an account and would prefer to download the lossless version, I've posted the MFS sourced show below.
Enjoy!
