Nick Lowe- Live At El Mocambo, 1978

Yeah, it's been awhile since I posted last and since that time it feels like we've passed through two seasons. There's snow on the ground where I am and we're into November already, so I thought I better get back to posting and catch up! I listened to a whole bunch of shows that seem interesting, some that peaked my interest for whatever reason, including a couple of bands celebrating significant anniversaries of landmark albums that are worth exploring, but more on that in upcoming posts.

Something that caught my attention was a post on Dime with a live recording of Nick Lowe from the same concert as Elvis Costello's, Live At The El Mocambo promo/bootleg (that was later officially released) from March 6, 1978. The Elvis portion of the concert was a radio broadcast live on CHUM-FM, so the recording was good and in theory the Lowe portion was probably from the same recording, but not broadcast. During the concert when Costello returned for the encore, he introduced Nick Lowe as the "special guest" and Lowe and the Attractions launched into the mini 4 (3) song set. This was followed by Costello performing the encore (that was included on Costello's LP). What I have below is from a rare 7" EP promo released by CBS (not my copy!), that was only available in Canada and wasn't sold in stores. If you can find a copy of this collectible, it's a keeper, as it's supposedly worth a few bucks. If you're a fan of Lowe (or Costello), this is worth a listen and a neat companion piece to Elvis Costello's, Live at the El Mocambo.
Enjoy!

Blue Rodeo- CFNY Live Broadcast, Toronto 1987

When I think of quality prolific bands from Canada, you have to consider Blue Rodeo as one of the best. Since they formed in 1984, with their first album, Outskirts released in 1987, they have officially released 20 records (including live and greatest hits) right up to their most recent album, 1000 Arms (2016). Though they are thought of as a country rock band, they have mixed in genres such as folk, blues and rock, but have maintained a consistent sound with founding members, Greg Keeler, Jim Cuddy and bassist Basil Donovan. I have only seen the band at least 3 times live and they have never failed to impress. The most memorable show I saw Blue Rodeo was for the grand re-opening (after renovating from a movie theatre) of the Walker Theatre (later renamed Burton Cummings Theatre) in 1991 during the Casino tour. It might even be one of the best shows I've seen at the Walker/Burt, it was loud, fast, energetic and Blue Rodeo was amazing. I believe we sat in the first couple rows of the balcony so we had a good view, but unfortunately this was in my pre-taper days so I didn't record it. The other times I've seen Blue Rodeo was outdoor shows and I feel the outdoor big stage concerts never have the same feel or intensity as bars, theatres, concert halls or even arenas.

Blue Rodeo live at the Diamond Club was captured early in their career about 8 months after the release of their debut, Outskirts. This partial show was released on the promo only, The Outskirts Special & The CFNY Live Broadcast. This two record set features the Outskirts special and an interview with the band on the first LP, with the CFNY Live Concert Broadcast on the second LP. While the live recording includes songs from Outskirts, it's worth noting there are at least a couple songs that are not on the first album (unreleased?). The sound is excellent because it was professionally recorded and the band is tight, young and eager to impress, they definitely do!

Blue Shadows- Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto 1994

Since I'm officially going to be laid off from my work starting April 1 (no joke!) because in my province, all non-critical and essential services and business will close at least for the next two weeks. I'm not too torn up about it yet, and though I'm no psychic, I'm guessing these closures will be extended longer. For how long, it's anyone's guess. The good news is it is allowing me more time to browse through my collection of shows to post new material on the blog. I also have a bit of a backlog of shows I've uploaded, but haven't posted yet. I might have lost interest or enthusiasm for the show or something more interesting or timely came up. Anyways, it should mean more posts in the upcoming weeks as I'll try to make time to write and listen to even more music. Fun times! I hope...at least until the money runs dry.

When you think of Vancouver's, Blue Shadows, country music comes to mind, right? Yes and no, and it isn't a bad thing. I'm not a huge fan of country music in general, but the Blue Shadows are in a wider genre: alt country, folk, rock. You can't help but think of the Everly Brothers with some amazing harmonies from vocalists, Billy Cowsill and Jeffrey Hatcher and a tight band with a touch of rockabilly and 50's rock. Everyone knows the story of Billy Cowsill who co-formed the Cowsills in the mid-60's and stayed active in the music scene through five decades. Cowsill considers his time in the Blue Shadows as his most positive experience as a musician to that point in his career. The driving and creative force of the Blue Shadows was Jeffrey Hatcher, a Winnipegger who relocated to Vancouver (but is back in the Peg) who brought his immense talent to the forefront with some great songs. Hatcher enjoyed modest success with his band, Jeffrey Hatcher and the Big Beat in the 80's and has more recently reunited with his brothers with The Fuse, a band that pre-dated the Big Beat. It really is a shame the Blue Shadows only released two albums due to Cowsill's addictions that broke up the band. I highly recommend you seek out those two albums, On The Floor Of Heaven and Lucky To Me. The deluxe edition of On The Floor Of Heaven features a bonus second disc of outtakes and covers the band recorded.

The live recording from the Horseshoe in 1994 captures the band in fine form that was professionally recorded and aired on CBC radio. The sound is outstanding and the performance is flawless with Hatcher and Cowsill at their harmonizing best. Thanks again to stevemtl who recorded this concert on the radio and transferred and posted the show to Dime. I have many CBC radio broadcasts from this time period on cassette masters, so thanks stevemtl for taking the time to post. There was talk and interest that (allegedly) this recording would be released as a bonus live disc packaged with the reissue of Luck To Me, but unfortunately the label folded so the project didn't happen. Such a shame!

Ho Ho, Wilco Is Coming Back To Town! Day 8: Live From The Horseshoe 1997

It's been over ten years since I've seen Wilco live and a lot has happened since 2008. They have since released 5 albums as Wilco and Jeff Tweedy has 3 solo records, a memoir book and an album as Tweedy, a side project with his son, Spencer. The band personnel is pretty much the same (which is good!) and they sound as strong as ever especially on their brand new album, Ode To Joy. I somewhat regret not buying tickets to their shows in St. Paul last month, but ode to joy they announced new tour dates for the new year a couple weeks ago. I was lucky enough to purchase tickets within the first few minutes of the first presale for the show in Winnipeg in March. They are prime seats close up (not too close) and dead centre. Looking forward to seeing the band closeup with the excellent sound quality at the Concert Hall.

Another interesting option to see Wilco live starts tonight for a four night run (Dec. 15, 16, 18, 19) at the Chicago Theater in their hometown of Chicago. The setlist of multiple night shows often unearth some deep cut gems and the band has such an expansive song selection it would be worth attending multiple nights.

An even better road trip would be in January when Wilco hosts, Wilco's Sky Blue Sky, a series of shows at the Hard Rock Resort Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. What better way to get away in the middle of winter than to enjoy sand, sun and Wilco! Not to mention all-inclusive which includes accommodation, food, drinks and the concerts with Yo La Tengo, Courtney Barnett, Calexico, Sharon Van Etten, Autumn Defense, Tweedy solo and Wilco three times. As tempting as this sounds, I'll pass as my funds will be running a little dry during this month, but hopefully this might become a semi-annual event? If so, I'll start saving soon!

To get you in the mood, I'm posting a Wilco show from over 22 years ago when they were touring their then new album, Being There. This was the album that broke Wilco to a mainstream, a masterpiece that landed on many critics "Best of" lists. Personally, this is the album that confirmed to me that Jeff Tweedy was the real deal as a gifted songwriter and dependable performer. I previously knew of Tweedy as a member of Golden Smog and of course, Uncle Tupelo, but he proved he could be a frontman with Wilco. This concert from the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto was broadcast on CBC radio is an excellent of a Wilco show from that era which included Bob Egan on pedal steel that gave the band a country-rock sound. The "Dueling Banjos" segment during Casino Queen is priceless. The show is edited for time, it omits 5 songs from the concert (Why Would You Wanna Live, Kingpin, Outtasite, The Lonely 1, Gun), but the sound is impeccable and the performance is amazing! Seeing Wilco in such a intimate venue would be something to see, they were on the verge of future greatness at the time, so this is a very memorable show! A must-hear!
Enjoy!

Back From Europe! R.I.P Kim Shattuck: Day 5

It's been a couple of weeks since I returned from my European vacation, we spent a week in Prague in the Czech Republic and almost a week in Barcelona, Spain. The main idea of the trip was originally revolved around the NHL Global series game between the Blackhawks and Flyers in Prague on October 4th. We extended our vacation to Barcelona for another week of sightseeing and more tropical-type weather before I returned to my snow covered city in Canada where the two previous days before our return was declared a state of emergency because of heavy snowfall, fallen trees and citywide power outrages. Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled to return.

Prague was beautiful and quite historically fascinating, while Barcelona was crowded, dirtier, exciting and just as fascinating. We did the usual rounds of tourist attractions, but I was anxious to visit some record stores. It was easy to navigate, as many of the stores fortunately seemed to be clustered in a small area downtown, off the La Rambla branched off onto small backlane-like streets. Before leaving on my trip I read an article at the Vinyl Factory.com, The definitive guide to Barcelona's best record stores, which gave me a preview of some stores I should check out. I managed to visit Daily Records, Wah Wah Records, Discos Revolver and Revolver Records. I should note if you visit stores in Spain to check their hours ahead of time because some stores close during some of the afternoon (e.g. 1:00-4:00 or 1:30-4:30?) and I missed a couple stores because they were closed. At the Discos Revolver store I bought 3 lp's and a 7" er. Ironically, two of the records (Bum- Shake Town! and Stand GT- They're Magically Delicious) are Canadian bands, but Spanish label vinyl releases. This store is so cool, they wrote a nice post about me on their Instagram page.

At Wah Wah records I bought this nifty orange record carrying bag to transport my vinyl on the airplane. I picked up record from the Dishrags, an almost forgotten punk band from Vancouver (formed in Victoria, BC), circa late 70's. It's a loud, fast and smokin' record that was well worth the huge Euro price. I also bought a reissue of France Gall's, Baby Pop a fine ye-ye French pop singer from the 60's.

When I was in Prague during the first week of vacation I was shocked by the news that Kim Shattuck of the Muffs had passed away. She died at her home on October 2, due to complications from ALS. Personally, I've been a fan of the band since their first album, The Muffs released in 1993 and frequently listen to their live recordings and most of their records. One of my fav albums is Hamburger, released in 2000, that compiles demos, outtakes, covers, singles and compilation appearances up until that time. Of interest, is their earliest material recorded on 4-track and their first releases. Two weeks following Shattuck's death, the Muffs released their final album, No Holiday that compiled songs written from 1991 to 2017. I've always felt Shattuck's writing was underrated and that the Muffs deserved more commercial success, but then again I may have not liked them as much if they made it huge. I was always attracted to Shattuck's oversized, sometimes snarky attitude, but sweet personality. I found her funny, hilarious even at times and I always admired and respected the talent she had and she could rock with the best of them.

I have several live Muffs shows I could share, but one of my favourites is still a show I shared in 2011 from a CBC-FM radio broadcast from 1995 in Toronto. This is sort of a re-seed, but back then I posted the lossy mp3 version on the blog, but this time I'm posted the lossless FLAC version in case it matters to anyone. If you haven't heard this concert yet with fresh ears, it's a good one! Excellent sound quality and as usual an amazing Muffs concert. A fitting tribute to Kim Shattuck and the mighty mighty Muffs!
Enjoy!

Whoa, It's Been Thirteen Years Of Trouble!! Day One: Kathleen Edwards

Yes, it's true. Teenage Dogs In Trouble is still going strong after celebrating 13 years of being online earlier this month. Despite the lack of posts so far in 2019, I'm hoping to make up for it with more frequent posts for the rest of the calendar year. Similar to last year's #12daysoftrouble challenge, I'm going to attempt to make 13 posts in the next 13 days! To be realistic (who am I kidding!), this will not happen, but I do hope to complete this within the next month, so I will write, day 1, day 2, day 3...for each of the thirteen posts mainly to personally keep track and as incentive I'm going to make it.

Every year in early July, I agonize whether or not to attend the annual Winnipeg Folk Festival. Nowadays, even though I love music and watching musicians perform it usually takes a lot of convincing or some interesting acts to get me to make the trek. This year I have some regrets because Kathleen Edwards performed on the last night of the festival and according to people I have talked to it was a fine performance. She has been in the studio recording, so I think a new album will be coming soon and I haven't seen Kathleen live for several years so I hope to have the opportunity soon with luck in an indoor venue within driving distance. If you're familiar with this blog, you know I'm a huge supporter of Kathleen's music and I can never have enough live recordings of hers.

A very good source of Kathleen Edwards live shows was a music blog I followed called, blog.haterhigh.com. Unfortunately, the blog is no longer online, but Jason who operated the blog had tons of excellent concerts he recorded including 11 Edwards shows for download. This site was one of my favourite live concert blogs, not only because he shared lots of local (Toronto) shows, but because he wrote a very detailed description of his recording experience including the equipment he used, where he recorded from and his interaction with people that attended and performed. To top it off he is Canadian and it's refreshing to read something written by someone so passionate about the music. I don't know the circumstances of why the blog is no longer around, so if anyone knows Jason or familiar with the blog I would love to find out why. Through the magic of the Internet Wayback Machine (archive.org), you can read the archived screenshots of webpages. The download links do not work, but fortunately I downloaded all the KE shows before the site went down, and I don't think they are presently being shared anywhere else.

The show I'm sharing is from the haterhigh site and it's an intimate, unique show that sounds amazing. To best describe the concert here's an excerpt from the taper stolen ripped off from haterhigh.com:

In the first night of a once-weekly residency series of shows at the Drake Hotel (Underground), Kathleen Edwards debuted some brand new songs for the loving Toronto crowd, paced through some old favourites and finished off with a welcome cover. The sound was absolutely phenomenal, allowing the band’s performance to shine brightly through. The intimate Drake Underground encourages a strange, respectful silence amongst the rapt crowd, reserving their loud enthusiasm for between-song applause and the curtain call.

And the crowd had a reason to be enthusiastic on this night. Kathleen brought a new band and a batch of new songs, but her same old inimitable self. Good news! All of the above were great!

I was initially disappointed not to see Kathleen sharing the stage with local legend Colin Cripps, but Gord Tough filled his large, clown-like shoes admirably. The rhythm section was also superbly on point, and was perhaps one of the tightest sets I’ve seen performed in some time. The new songs sounded as fleshed-out as nearly decade-old favourites, and show a powerful strength and confidence that hint at phenomenal follow-up record to 2008’s acclaimed Asking For Flowers LP.

Additionally, it's interesting to note that some of the early performances of songs that would eventually appear on her next album, Voyageur sound quite different than on the studio album. In particular, Chameleon/Comedian (Chameleon) is missing the "Punchline" chorus and Change The Sheets (Change) is much more rock and upbeat. In some ways I prefer the rawer early versions to the slicker sounding album versions. These residency shows are an opportunity for the band to work out the new songs live and an extra special treat for fans to hear the transformation of the songs taking shape. The band does sound surprisingly tight and the atmosphere has a relaxed and intimate vibe to it that makes this a very special recording. Thanks so much Jason!
Enjoy!

Replacements- Riot Fest, Toronto, August 25, 2013

I know it's old news and you've probably already read the reviews, seen the videos and heard the recordings from the Replacements "reunion" show at Riot Fest a few weeks back, but I thought I would give an opportunity for those that missed out to still listen to this amazing concert. As far as I know, there are three live audience recordings circulating (yup, I downloaded all three), two that were posted on Dime in lossless and all three at the Replacements Live Archive Project on Facebook in mp3 and on the blog version.

On the weekend of August 24-25, I was on the West Coast attending a family reunion while across the country in Toronto, Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg reunited on stage together (along with Dave Minehan and Josh Freese) for a smoking set of Replacements classics. While many refuse to acknowledge this to be a real Replacements reunion without half the original band, it was a treat to hear Paul Westerberg perform a full set of Replacements songs instead of a small sampling during his solo shows. I'm such a huge fan of Westerberg and Stinson I would see them with or without each other, but to hear the Mats songs, especially the early material is a bonus. Wish I could attend Chicago next week or Denver later in the month, but I'm holding out hope they play a Minneapolis concert in the near future, I guarantee I'll be there!

Versions 1 and 2 were also posted on Dime in FLAC format. If you don't have an account and would prefer to download the lossless version, I've posted the MFS sourced show below.

Mary Lou Lord- CBC 1998

On this blog I try to post music that is hard to find, out of print or live recordings that I have recorded or in most cases shows I've downloaded or received in a trade. I have on occasion received copyright infringement take down warnings which I have abided by and respected and I have been careful not to post anything that could jeopardize this blog's existence. In the past year, many excellent blogs (many with large readership) have fallen by the waste side either from being banned and locked out of their online storage that links to the music or taken down by Blogger or whatever platform they use. Often they are reported by a band, a record label or music copyright owner. In the past year, I have removed links to albums from the Volcano Suns, the Crust Brothers and Best Kissers In the World (because it was finally being officially released, buy it here!) As I have stated in the past, please contact me if you would like a link removed or if I haven't given credit where credit is due, thanks!

I was recently informed by reader DW that the Mary Lou Lord EP that I posted a while back is still in print and suggested it wasn't appropriate to offer a download for it. This is the type of feedback I seek and in this case I assumed the CD wasn't still available and after a quick Internet search for the EP/CD I still couldn't find physical CD's for sale (please correct me if I'm wrong), but it is available as a digital download on iTunes and Amazon. In the future when I post an album I will double check that it isn't available for sale (except for eBay etc...), especially if the artist will be deprived of a sale. I do have some vinyl LP's I would like to post in the near future, so from now on I will be more careful with what I post. With this in mind, I will remove the links for the MLL EP and possibly the unreleased Neil Young album, Chrome Dreams (which has caused grief for some ex-blogs in the past) in the next 24 hours.

Here's a radio broadcast from the good ol' CBC on a show that aired on Saturday nights called, Radiosonic that featured live concerts and "in-studio" sessions and sometimes an interview. I sourced a lot of good recordings from this program that I captured on my tape deck or gretto-blaster-type cassette player/recorder. I am in the process of transferring other concerts from tape to digital. This might have been my first exposure to MLL and she instantly appealed to me not only because I loved the songs, but because she's such a sweet and unpretentious performer. I have to warn you I didn't get great reception on my radio and there is some static. My fault, as I was trying to fine tune to the station better, otherwise it's a great mini-set of fine tunes.
Enjoy!

Juliana Hatfield- Sam The Record Man 1993

I had more requests for early Juliana Hatfield and since I've been enjoying her new "covers" album so much, I'll try to post another band show and maybe some Blake Babies as well. Juliana is on tour with the Lemonheads (opening for the Psychedelic Furs) upcoming in October and then Juliana and Evan Dando will be touring Australia in December. Hopefully some fans will be bringing their tape recorders to capture these shows. If I hear of anything, I'll share the shows here or post the links.

I meant to post this show as a tribute to Record Store Day back in April (opting instead for Paul Westerberg) and it's a good "up close" performance inside the legendary Sam The Record Man store in downtown Toronto (close to Dundas Square) which has sadly been closed since 2007. A good sounding audience recording that captures Juliana solo acoustic, circa, the Become What You Are record. A loose and relaxed Juliana plays this in-store and later that evening at Lee's Palace. I'll try to track down that show too.
Enjoy!

Sloan- (You Don't Need To) Coax Me

Photos by Corbin Smith/Torontoist

When I returned from vacation an envelope had arrived in the mail with my tickets (I purchased online before I left) to the Sloan show here in mid-September. I'm excited because the band is performing their Twice Removed record in it's entirety and since it's one of their classic albums (and one of my favs), it promises to be a good time. While on vacation to get in the mood, I listened to the album multiple times and it seems to get better every time I hear it. To coincide with the Twice Removed tour, Sloan is reissuing the album in early September in a grand deluxe edition which will feature 3 vinyl LP's (Twice Removed album, demos and outtakes), 7" vinyl single, 32 page booklet, as well as some others goodies and additional exclusive items for pre-orders. Sounds like a real treat for the hardcore fan, but for $90, might be too rich for the casual listener. To pre-order (before September 4th) the Twice Removed Deluxe Edition, visit the Sloan site.

Sloan isn't shy to perform the "album in it's entirety" thing as they performed the One Chord To Another record for a benefit (# see below) in Toronto in 2011. Another great Sloan album that works well live when played in sequence. I downloaded this show from Dime via http://mechanicalforestsound.blogspot.com/, an amazing live music blog that features recordings from the Toronto, Canada area. Blogs like this really are a labour of love created and maintained by true music fans that want to share music we would otherwise not be able to enjoy. Please visit and appreciate their sites! Thank you  MFS, hope you don't mind if I re-post this show!
Enjoy!

The Rolling Stones Live At The Palais Royale 2002

Back in 2002, before the Rolling Stones headed out on their "Licks" tour, the band descended on Toronto for rehearsals at the Masonic Hall. They took a break from rehearsals to play a surprise warm-up gig at the Palais Royale Ballroom in front of a crowd of less than 1000 fans and invited guests. If you were lucky enough to score a $10 ticket to this club show, you were treated to an amazing set that resurrected some nice gems and rarely performed material. A loose, raw set filled with mistakes (that's why it's a warm-up gig, right?), but the band seemed to be enjoying themselves. I'm sure if the Stones had their way a tour of smaller venues and clubs would be a nice way for a comeback, but with money talking and the amount of people that would like to see the band at mass (in arenas and stadiums), that's probably not gonna happen anytime soon.
Enjoy!

What A Spectacle! Elvis Costello Live At The El Mocambo

If you're an Elvis Costello fan, actually if you're a fan of GOOD music, make sure to tune in to Elvis's TV series debuting on Canadian TV this Friday April 3 on CTV (and on Bravo on the 4th), called Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... In this highly acclaimed show that has already played in the States last year on the Sundance network, Elvis talks to musicians (and other interesting guests) and conjures up eclectic performances and collaborations not seen anywhere. His amazing guest list includes; the Police, Elton John, Lou Reed, Smokey Robinson, Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Jenny Lewis, James Taylor, President Bill Clinton among others. This show will be more than the usual Letterman-ish interview show, it will allow the musicians to share their love and passion about their own music and for the music they enjoy. This show looks so promising, not only will I attempt to watch this show weekly, I've already added this season series (when it's available on DVD and should include lots of bonus material) to my Christmas list. Stay tuned!

If you don't know who Elvis Costello is or don't have a reference point for his music, I suggest you look up his discography and start at the beginning with the 1977 classic, My Aim Is True, followed by This Years Model, Armed Forces and Get Happy!! His production through the 80's, 90's and 00's has been prolific with various musical style changes album to album. He has collaborated with everyone from Burt Bacharach, Brodsky Quartet, Bill Frisell, Allen Toussaint to Paul McCartney, Fall Out Boy and Jenny Lewis (from Rilo Kiley).

As a tribute to Elvis Costello, I'm posting an excellent example of early live Elvis with his legendary live album, Live At the El Mocambo. This oft bootlegged album was recorded in Toronto in 1978 and was first available as a Canadian promo album (yes, vinyl!!). It was later included in the "2 1/2 Years" boxset of his first 3 albums (this was the fourth disc in the set). In 1993, it was re-released in CD form by Rykodisc. This is Elvis at his finest, raw, edgy and unbelievably infectious! Enjoy!!
