Boy, time sure flies by! My last post was from April (R.E.M.) and I think I posted something else the same day. Apparently, I violated Blogger community guidelines and the post featuring the band, Maow was deleted. This is a band Neko Case was a member of before her solo career and I assume that might be the cause of this take-down. She is adamantly against the recording of her shows (and sharing) and this probably extends to her album work as well. There seems to be no problem with New Pornographers live recordings, a band she is a member of, as I've posted several shows over the years, as they don't have a no taping policy like Neko solo...but Maow? Anyways, the point is I haven't posted much in many months and I apologize.

For fans itching to hear and see another Replacements or Paul Westerberg show, I have no new updates to share and we'll have to be content with past live recordings to keep us satisfied. Another example of how time is flying by, today is the 30th anniversary of a Westerberg show from the tour for his debut solo album. The live recording for the show at RKCNDY in Seattle in 1993 has been shared for years and I actually have the show I acquired in a tape trade that I haven't listened to in a while. The dub (copy) I have is probably multiple generation and the sound quality wasn't great. I seem to remember the volume level was really low and lacked the dynamics of a lower gen recording. Today on Dime, a remastered, fresh 2023 transfer version from an audience master DAT source was posted that is a definite upgrade (thank you slipkid68!!). I'm guessing this is a different capture than the version I have and the sound quality is unbelievably excellent. It seriously sounds as good as a soundboard, but better because the crowd is nicely balanced in the mix. A nice way to celebrate the anniversary of this amazing concert, with a setlist that highlights his first album, 14 Songs, with lots of Replacements songs and a couple covers. I believe the 1993 tour gave us perhaps the best live shows (yes, even including the Replacements) with solid performances and fostered some pretty fine live recordings. If you're craving some live Westerberg or Replacements, this might be the next best thing...for now!

Alex Chilton & Teenage Fanclub- Live In Glasgow 1996

Among the records I got from my sister recently were a couple of Alex Chilton related albums, Big Star's second album, Radio City (a classic!) and a solo Chilton import compilation from 1985, Document. It's evident from these records, Chilton was an extremely talented songwriter especially his work with Big Star and he carried it on through most of his solo albums, though like most artists some were uneven and inconsistent. His music has influenced a whole generation of musicians that have incorporated the (once) underappreciated sound of Big Star who have updated and expanded on their sound. A couple bands immediately come to mind, the Replacements played several Big Star covers live and Paul Westerberg paid tribute to Chilton in the aptly titled song, Alex Chilton from the Please To Please Me album. Chilton even produced a couple of tracks for the band on Tim, though those tracks didn't appear on the original album. 

The Posies worshiped at the temple of Big Star as their sound was clearly influenced by Big Star. Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow from the Posies were the obvious choice to play alongside Chilton (and original drummer, Jody Stephens) in a revised version of Big Star that was formed in 1993. They toured several times and recorded an album of new material (Big Star's last studio album), In Space in 2005.

Another band that embraced the sound of Big Star was Scottish revivalist band, Teenage Fanclub who enjoyed considerable success in the 90's and continue to this day touring and releasing excellent albums. The band hasn't shied away from collaborations with other musicians as they recorded an album with Jad Fair (Words Of Wisdom And Hope), a track with De La Soul (Fallin'), a session with Frank Black and recording (still unreleased) tracks with Alex Chilton. 

When Alex Chilton played a couple concerts in Scotland in 1993 and 1996, he selected Teenage Fanclub as his backup band to perform Big Star songs, solo material and several covers. The band seamlessly performs the songs and Chilton is in good spirits and fortunately the concert is captured by BBC Scotland with an excellent sounding broadcast quality live recording. As a bonus, the latter part of the broadcast (track 19 on), the Alex Chilton Trio perform a "jazz set" (not sure if it's the same night?) which proves to be just as enjoyable. This show has been widely available, but I have seen this listed as April 8, 1993 and April 8, 1996 on different boots of this recording. The source I got this from (on Dime) several years ago was dated 1993, so for now (*) I'll stick with this date. Overall a great show with amazing sound and fans of Alex Chilton, Big Star and Teenage Fanclub will not be disappointed!

Now We Are 10! Celebrating 10 Years Of Trouble!!

Still a mess after all these years!

YES, believe it or not, the Teenage Dogs In Trouble music blog is celebrating it's 10th anniversary! The very first blog entry was posted on August 3, 2006. In the first post, I talked about my love for music, about how my life pretty music revolves around listening to, reading about and writing about music. I had grand plans to share "new, random and MUST have CD releases" and though I tried to stay on course I have altered (though only slightly) what I post on the blog. I'm now posting mainly live concert recording that I have recorded myself, or obtained in trades or downloaded elsewhere on the web. My emphasis is less on posting albums or officially released recording for download because in the past I have been warned and threatened with take-down notices from record companies and the DMCA. I have complied with their requests and ask if any artist (or record execs) have an issue with any downloads on this page, please contact me directly. I can be very accommodating. Lots and lots of music blogs (some really GREAT ones) have come and gone in the past ten years (many taken down) and I hope TDIT will be around for another ten years.

Overflowing shelves, time to digitize!

 Since August is such a busy time with me, TDIT will celebrate this milestone throughout this year. Grand plans (hopefully) for a new logo, maybe some buttons and t-shirts or any other merch/swag I can afford sounds like a fun way to share with the followers to this blog. Thanks so much for your support and comments! I promise (this time for real!). I'll post more often and I want to share more live recordings I made back in my early taping days, the 90's. Stay tuned!

To celebrate 10 years, I'm posting a disc I got when I was a Dead Milkmen fan club member to commemorate their first 10 years as a band. Since then they released, Now We Are Twenty and since the Milkmen are still active, they should be releasing something for their 30th or more soon?

The Minus 5- First Ever Show, Seattle 1993

I've had numerous requests to post more Young Fresh Fellows shows and thank you for your response. I'll have some up soon, but in the meanwhile here's the very first performance from Scott McCaughey's "other band", The Minus 5. Scott formed the band with Peter Buck in 1993 as a pop collective with a revolving lineup of friends and musicians. The band is still going strong as Scott continues to divide his recording and touring time most frequently between the Baseball Project, The Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows and as a solo artist with a recent tour of Spain.

For this show at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle, the Minus 5 opened for The Silos. Scott and Peter performed together for the first five songs and were joined by members of The Silos for the last three. This show is also notable because a couple of days after this show The Silos were involved in a van crash in Wyoming that took the life of guitarist Manuel Versoza.

Uncle Tupelo- Denmark 1993

 With all the hoopla on this blog about the upcoming Replacements shows in Toronto, Chicago and Denver, it had me fantasizing about what other bands I would like to see reunite for a concert or tour. I started compiling a list of bands I would love to see reform and I would try to be there to witness this event. This list is by no means official in any way and the chances of any of these bands getting back together are remote at best, it's just a personal dream list in no particular order. Please feel free to add your two cents and suggestions.

In the coming posts (or weeks), I'll explore some of these bands in more detail and hopefully I can find a show or two to post.

A reunion that would be near the top of my list is Uncle Tupelo. It's no secret Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar don't like each other and neither has any interest in playing together again, but it would be sure nice!

When they broke up (last show): Uncle Tupelo's last concert was May 1, 1994 at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis.

Why They Split: Egos, jealousy. Jay might have felt threatened by Jeff taking a more active role in the band. Also Jeff stroking Jay's girlfriend's hair caused further tension to an already disintegrating relationship.

Post Breakup: Tweedy and the rest of Tupelo formed Wilco, while Farrar started a new band, Son Volt. Wilco has gone on to be quite successful both commercially and artistically. They have taken their sound beyond the genre of No Depression alt-country to creative heights that make Wilco one of the most interesting American bands now. Jay Farrar has stayed closer to his roots with a sound steeped in Americana.

Odds of a Reunion: Doesn't look good right now, but you never know. I honestly believe this will happen eventually, maybe if Wilco takes a long break or if the right opportunity or a common cause brings them together. Many bands have buried the hatchet for a one-off or two if the money is right, but I don't believe this would be about money. I don't think Farrar wants to be upstaged by Tweedy and it would probably have to be an even split setlist (similar to their last show).

This is a great sounding recording that is sourced from a FM broadcast. This show features many tracks from the forthcoming album, Anodyne that was released later in the year. Tweedy and Farrar were still on speaking terms at this time.

Bash & Pop- Live In Vermillion 1993

After the Replacements disbanded in 1991, Tommy Stinson formed his first post-Replacements band, Bash & Pop in 1992. Tommy switched to guitar, took lead vocals and wrote the songs, but the band was short lived and disbanded in 1994. The band recorded and released just one album (and a track to the Clerks soundtrack), Friday Night Is Killing Me and I thought it held it's own up against the other ex-Replacement's first projects as it showed flashes of brilliance that makes Stinson a legitimate frontman. The songs were catchy, poppy and sometimes rocked hard, but I thought the slower tracks (Friday Night (Is Killing Me) and Nothing) had a sensitivity I didn't think Stinson had.

There aren't a lot of live recordings of Bash & Pop (they only lasted 2 years) and the setlists are similar since they only had an album's worth of material. This concert from the University of South Dakota has excellent sound (soundboard quality) and though the performance was loose with a mid-song stop and a false start, this is well worth the listen for any Mats fan. Big Star- Rehearsals 1993

Though they only released three studio albums in the early 70's, the interest in Big Star has continued even 40 years later. The band's influence is evident in many bands today and though the band never reached huge mainstream success, they have (arguably) been widely regarded as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt You is a full length documentary film that will coming to theatres across the country this summer. The film features never seen before footage of the band as well as in depth interviews. It's unfortunate that 3 of the 4 members of the band had passed away (Chris Bell 1978, Alex Chilton 2010, Andy Hummel 2010) before the completion of the film. I'll definitely have an interest trying to catch a screening of the film, as I admittedly am not an expert about the band's history and legacy.


I first became aware of Big Star from listening to Replacements bootlegs with the band covering songs like, September Gurls and I'm In Love With A Girl. Hey, if my favourite band, the Replacements love Big Star, I better see what the fuss was. From that I bought a CD compiling both #1 Record and Radio City and also their third album, Sister Lovers/Third, definitely one of my wisest music decisions ever. I never had a chance to see Big Star live (I was too young during their original inception and the reunited version of the band never toured close enough) and the closest that I've come to Big Star-related live shows was the Posies and Golden Smog with Jody Stephens on drums, both shows (in different years) at the 400 bar in Minneapolis in the 2000's.

To get you in the right spirit, I'm posting the "reunited" version of Big Star (Alex Chilton, Jody Stephens, Jon Auer, Ken Stringfellow) rehearsing a run through of their set before the first reunion show that was immortalized on the live recording, Columbia: Live At Missouri University. Recordings like this are cool because they offer a fly-on-the wall listen to the band working through the songs, with some discussion about details of the songs. A solid sounding set, though the vocals are low in parts, this should interest any fans of the band and it's yet another rare document of a great band we don't know enough about and apparently can't get enough of.

Juliana Hatfield- Sam The Record Man 1993

I had more requests for early Juliana Hatfield and since I've been enjoying her new "covers" album so much, I'll try to post another band show and maybe some Blake Babies as well. Juliana is on tour with the Lemonheads (opening for the Psychedelic Furs) upcoming in October and then Juliana and Evan Dando will be touring Australia in December. Hopefully some fans will be bringing their tape recorders to capture these shows. If I hear of anything, I'll share the shows here or post the links.

I meant to post this show as a tribute to Record Store Day back in April (opting instead for Paul Westerberg) and it's a good "up close" performance inside the legendary Sam The Record Man store in downtown Toronto (close to Dundas Square) which has sadly been closed since 2007. A good sounding audience recording that captures Juliana solo acoustic, circa, the Become What You Are record. A loose and relaxed Juliana plays this in-store and later that evening at Lee's Palace. I'll try to track down that show too.

Fellows Live In Japan 1993

One of my favourite Young Fresh Fellows (bootleg) live shows is when they toured Japan in 1993. This is a nice sounding show from Tower Records featuring an interesting setlist of some less known stuff. An appreciative, yet polite Japanese audience luck out for being there. By no means is this a full YFF concert, but a short, but sweet record store appearance complete with an autograph signing. I'm just happy there was at least this show that was recorded. Thanks, to whoever recorded this!

During this tour, there's an all too-brief clip from the film, Hype! of the Fellows. Also at this time, the band issued a CD-EP 7 song tour promo sampler, Japan Tour 1993 which includes 5 original and two covers. I have this disc, so if anyone's interested I could post this rarity as well.
