Costello Sings Lowe/Nick Sings Elvis- San Francisco, October 1, 2010: 16 Years Of Trouble!

 

I have Elvis on my mind! No, not that ancient rocker who had a recent bio-pic about his life in theaters, the Elvis who's married to Canada's, Diana Krall! I saw (via social media), a friend of mine, Hugh, saw Elvis Costello at Massey Hall in Toronto last night. On my daily dose of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die Generator , my featured album today is Elvis Costello's 1994 album, Brutal Youth, with Nick Lowe playing bass on the record. By coincidence, Nick Lowe was the support act (opener) for Costello last night. To add to the coincidences, yesterday (before I realized Costello was performing last night) I listened to a live recording from 2010 that featured Elvis and Nick sharing a co-billing show performing each other's songs. It was a benefit in San Francisco that was recorded, but never officially released and it was available from Dime about a month ago. It's an outstanding show with both Elvis and Nick trading off songs and singing together on a handful of songs. It's a joy to hear them each perform unique versions of the songs that might be arranged different and sound almost like a different song, but they add their own style to each song. A truly unique concert and at the time it was a one-off concept for that night (for both the early & late shows). The sound quality is excellent and the setlist is amazing! Get this while you can!

So sorry for the recent lack of posts. After coming back from vacation, I feel refreshed and energized and looking forward to more postings. Hey, believe it or not, Teenage Dogs In Trouble just celebrated (Aug. 3rd) it's 16th anniversary and I hope to run this into the ground a bit longer. Seriously, I want to thank everyone that has taken the time to read the blog and feel free to continue to download as much content as possible. I realize a lot of older links haven't been working, so keep sending me your requests to re-post. Some items and files I might not have access to anymore, but I will try to dig and get as I can back up.

Whoa, It's Been Thirteen Years Of Trouble!! Day One: Kathleen Edwards

Yes, it's true. Teenage Dogs In Trouble is still going strong after celebrating 13 years of being online earlier this month. Despite the lack of posts so far in 2019, I'm hoping to make up for it with more frequent posts for the rest of the calendar year. Similar to last year's #12daysoftrouble challenge, I'm going to attempt to make 13 posts in the next 13 days! To be realistic (who am I kidding!), this will not happen, but I do hope to complete this within the next month, so I will write, day 1, day 2, day 3...for each of the thirteen posts mainly to personally keep track and as incentive I'm going to make it.

Every year in early July, I agonize whether or not to attend the annual Winnipeg Folk Festival. Nowadays, even though I love music and watching musicians perform it usually takes a lot of convincing or some interesting acts to get me to make the trek. This year I have some regrets because Kathleen Edwards performed on the last night of the festival and according to people I have talked to it was a fine performance. She has been in the studio recording, so I think a new album will be coming soon and I haven't seen Kathleen live for several years so I hope to have the opportunity soon with luck in an indoor venue within driving distance. If you're familiar with this blog, you know I'm a huge supporter of Kathleen's music and I can never have enough live recordings of hers.

A very good source of Kathleen Edwards live shows was a music blog I followed called, blog.haterhigh.com. Unfortunately, the blog is no longer online, but Jason who operated the blog had tons of excellent concerts he recorded including 11 Edwards shows for download. This site was one of my favourite live concert blogs, not only because he shared lots of local (Toronto) shows, but because he wrote a very detailed description of his recording experience including the equipment he used, where he recorded from and his interaction with people that attended and performed. To top it off he is Canadian and it's refreshing to read something written by someone so passionate about the music. I don't know the circumstances of why the blog is no longer around, so if anyone knows Jason or familiar with the blog I would love to find out why. Through the magic of the Internet Wayback Machine (archive.org), you can read the archived screenshots of webpages. The download links do not work, but fortunately I downloaded all the KE shows before the site went down, and I don't think they are presently being shared anywhere else.

The show I'm sharing is from the haterhigh site and it's an intimate, unique show that sounds amazing. To best describe the concert here's an excerpt from the taper stolen ripped off from haterhigh.com:

In the first night of a once-weekly residency series of shows at the Drake Hotel (Underground), Kathleen Edwards debuted some brand new songs for the loving Toronto crowd, paced through some old favourites and finished off with a welcome cover. The sound was absolutely phenomenal, allowing the band’s performance to shine brightly through. The intimate Drake Underground encourages a strange, respectful silence amongst the rapt crowd, reserving their loud enthusiasm for between-song applause and the curtain call.

And the crowd had a reason to be enthusiastic on this night. Kathleen brought a new band and a batch of new songs, but her same old inimitable self. Good news! All of the above were great!

I was initially disappointed not to see Kathleen sharing the stage with local legend Colin Cripps, but Gord Tough filled his large, clown-like shoes admirably. The rhythm section was also superbly on point, and was perhaps one of the tightest sets I’ve seen performed in some time. The new songs sounded as fleshed-out as nearly decade-old favourites, and show a powerful strength and confidence that hint at phenomenal follow-up record to 2008’s acclaimed Asking For Flowers LP.

Additionally, it's interesting to note that some of the early performances of songs that would eventually appear on her next album, Voyageur sound quite different than on the studio album. In particular, Chameleon/Comedian (Chameleon) is missing the "Punchline" chorus and Change The Sheets (Change) is much more rock and upbeat. In some ways I prefer the rawer early versions to the slicker sounding album versions. These residency shows are an opportunity for the band to work out the new songs live and an extra special treat for fans to hear the transformation of the songs taking shape. The band does sound surprisingly tight and the atmosphere has a relaxed and intimate vibe to it that makes this a very special recording. Thanks so much Jason!

Paul Westerberg- My Road Now

Short, but sweet! Thanks to a reader of this blog for informing me that Paul Westerberg has released a new song. My Road Now is streaming all over the net, but whether this is the first of more songs to come or if a album is in the works is unknown. The song is a piano ballad, in the style of Self Defence from Suicaine Gratification. Nothing special, but I still get excited to hear new Westerberg. I realize I can't expect the second coming of the Replacements anytime soon, but I've come to set my expectations to a different level and some Westerberg is better than nothing at all.

He hasn't released a solo recording in two years and through my search to seek info about this single I discovered that he released a couple of songs under the moniker of Mr. F, that was available as a limited edition 7" multi-coloured vinyl (and a bonus digital download of a third song). These songs are sparse sounding and demo quality and in the case of Grandpaboy's Last Stand, a lot of unfocused goofing around.

The Weakerthans- The Fallow Show

The title more accurately should read, songs from the Fallow album at The Albert, on December 15th. It was the first of four concerts the Weakerthans played in four consecutive nights conquering one album each night, at four different venues...the 4 & More series. This is an interesting concept as I've heard about more and more bands doing the "complete album" shows sometimes concentrating on a classic record for a tour (Liz Phair- Exile In Guyville or Roger Waters- The Wall). I only had the opportunity to attend 3 of the 4 nights (due to Christmas work commitments), so if anyone went to the 3rd night (Reconstruction Site) and recorded the show, please let me know! I recorded the shows I attended and I want to share them with you, but ran into some trouble during the last show, I'll fill you in later. Wow, the last time I was at The Albert was seeing the Weakerthans in 2002 during their 5th anniversary concert series. Similar to this year's event, the band also played 4 shows in 4 nights at 4 different venues, but substituting the Burton Cummings Theatre with Wellington's, a now closed bar that hosted many amazing punk and alternative shows from the 70's right through to the early 2000's. The Albert hasn't changed much, still the same dank looking place I remember, kind of both friendly feeling and scary at the same time. Fortunately, with a band like the Weakerthans, the audience is fairly evenly split male/female ratio so the aggression I've felt at this bar seeing punk bands wasn't evident. I was just thinking about some of my most memorable shows I attended at the Albert. Green Day, (before they were famous), Plumtree (their last ever Winnipeg appearance), and the New Duncan Imperials (still the BEST show for under 10 bucks) are just a few of the bands I've seen there. I staked out a "sweet spot" in front of a pillar directly in front of the centre of the stage and watched the band "perform" Fallow in order from the first track to the end of the album. I'm sure there were songs that they hadn't played live in some time, if at all, but Fallow is a solid debut album and it was a thrill to hear it all live. The second half of their set featured 2 songs each from their other 3 albums and for the encore they played one more song from the other 3 albums. There is something extra special to see a band play at a venue that is "too small" for their popularity and see them genuinely have a good time and I know the crowd was into it as they passionately sang along at the appropriate times, it was a great feeling! A highlight (or low light) was when some drunken guy barged through the crowd and stumbled on stage during Plea From A Cat Named Virtute and grabbed the mic to sing along with Samson. The guy was harmless, he got off the stage after the song, but not before chugging from Stephen Carroll's beer. John K. later told me they just cautiously carried on when he came on stage, figuring as long as he wasn't a threat, no big deal. I guess this shows you the type of security the Albert has or lacks, if this was the Garrick, Pyramid or the Burt, security would have surely beat this guy. Here's a real review of the show.
