Blondie- Live At The Paradise 1978: R.I.P. Clem Burke

It almost seems like half my posts recently have been tributes to musicians who have passed away and last week another member of a well known band died. Clem Burke (Clement Bozewski), drummer for Blondie died on April 6th, at the age of 70 from cancer. Burke was the driving force behind Blondie, appeared on all their albums and remained with the band right up to his death. As well as Blondie, Burke has worked and collaborated with many artists through the years, including being a member of bands such as Chequered Past (w/Steve Jones), Empty Hearts (w/Elliot Easton) and the Romantics in the 90's.

I decided to post a Blondie show from 1978, which featured several songs from the just released, Parallel Lines album that turned Blondie from an interesting new wave band to commercial superstars. I personally wasn't a big Blondie fan at the time, but I have come to appreciate and enjoy the band, especially their debut and Parallel Lines. When I first found this show (on archive.org) I thought it was the headline set from the David Johansen show I posted a few posts ago, both shows are at the Paradise, but this Blondie show is actually later in the year (November vs May). This was also broadcast on WBCN, so the sound quality is excellent and definitely worth a listen. Interesting fact: their cover of T-Rex's, Bang A Gong (Get It On) from this show is included on the 2001 remastered reissue version of Parallel Lines.
Enjoy!

David Johansen Group- Live At the Paradise 1978: R.I.P.

A black and white photo of a long-haired David Johansen singing in front of a crowd in heeled boots, white trousers and a white sleeveless top next to Sylvain Sylvain playing guitar wearing shirt, braces and a bowler hat

Just heard on the news this morning that New York Dolls frontman, David Johansen died at 75. This is sad news, Johansen was the last surviving member of the pioneering proto-punk band, as he was battling stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor. I've always had a special place for the Dolls, as their music and rock 'n' roll swagger has been very influential to my music tastes and the bands I listened to in the late 70's/80's. Spinning off from the Dolls, I've followed guitarist, Johnny Thunders career, solo and with the Heartbreakers, but never really dug deep into Johansen's post-Dolls work. I'll admit, I was not a big fan of Johansen's alter-ego, Buster Poindexter, but his solo work (under his own name) wasn't bad and grossly underrated. I also respect him for reviving the Dolls for a reunion in 2004 (minus Thunders and Jerry Nolan) and forming a new lineup of the Dolls with Sylvain Sylvain that went on to tour and release three more studio albums, which was more output than the original lineup.

As a tribute to David Johansen (and Sylvain Sylvain), Here's a show from the David Johansen Group with Sylvain on guitar, the band opened for Blondie. It's a good sounding radio broadcast and even features a couple of NY Dolls songs. I've previously posted the only Dolls shows I have and just in case you missed them, the direct links/blog posts are below.
Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.- BBC: In Session

With the release of their latest album, Sweep It Into Space this past April, Dinosaur Jr has continued to record quality new material into their fifth decade of recording. Yes, it's kind of a shocker the band has been around this long, but there was an eight year hiatus in the middle of their career (original breakup 1997) and officially the band has been together longer the second time around since they reformed in 2005. Adding to that is that the original lineup of J, Lou and Murph were only together for the first 3 albums and since reuniting these three have now recorded 5 albums. I have seen Dinosaur Jr twice live, the first time in 1997 close to end of the first time before J retired the Dino name and later when the band reformed I saw them in 2007. For the 1997 show, J was the only original band member and what I remember about the show was that they seemed to be going through the motions. The performance lacked a spark or energy and where I was standing at the First Avenue in Minneapolis the sound sucked. In 2007, the band was touring their first album with the original lineup since Bug, Beyond (it's a great record!) and the performance was much fresher and enjoyable. J isn't known to be a flashy performer as he was flanked by his massive wall of amps, but Lou Barlow gave the band energy that is sadly missed without him and the band gave a solid performance in a smaller, more intimate venue.

The album, In Session is 10 tracks from in-studio sessions on the BCC that capture the band during the earlier part of their career. Two tracks (7 & 10), are from 1992 without Barlow and Murph, but the bulk of the tracks date to 1988-89. Great versions of these songs live, though they don't sound too much different than the studio album versions, but it is treat to hear the band live with such good studio quality live sound. Short, but sweet!
Enjoy!

Scruffy The Cat- Live On WBCN, Boston, MA 1989

It's been a while, over a month since my last post. In fact, I missed all of July due to being employed full time+ working in the film industry as a set buyer. I'm all done (for now) and it's back to normal life without the 10-12 hour days with little or no weekends off. It's been only a couple of days since this job ended, but it's a relief I can sit back and enjoy the rest of my summer and just in time to take in some serious NHL playoff action. I can also get back to browsing for and listening to music and having a beer or two without worrying about getting to bed early because I have to get up at an obscene hour. The job had it's good points, I did a lot of shopping and browsing in thrift stores, rented a lot of cool and unique items and I spend a majority of time driving to source products or get them to set on time. I also did listen to a lot of music while driving and though this might sound relaxing, it wasn't. Unfortunately, I spent way too much time inside of Walmarts and dollar stores than anyone should, so wearing a face covering mask was wise choice. It was an interesting 5 weeks, even for the experience (and the money was good!) and I would probably do it again if something like this becomes available again. For now, back to what I do best in semi-retirement, making art, playing music and watching hockey!

Most importantly I can get back to posting on this blog again which remains one of my passions along with the other things I previously mentioned. I really haven't had the time or energy to write for the past month, but I have some ideas of some future posts that I will make time to pursue. One of the shows I had uploaded before the break is this short radio broadcast featuring a TDIT favourite, Scruffy The Cat live in studio in Boston from 1989. This was recorded in the last year of Scruffy's career including some songs the band never released. As noted below, an early version of Love Song #9, listed here as, Talking To Myself was the last official recording the band released (split 7" with the Young Fresh Fellows). A great sounding recording that I don't think has been shared before (?) is a must-hear for any Scruffy The Cat fans. Great memories, great band!

The Juliana Hatfield Three- The Avalon, Boston, MA February 9, 1994

It's been twenty two years since the Juliana Hatfield Three released the album, Become What You Are and later this month, February 17th to be exact, they are releasing the long awaited follow-up, Whatever, My Love. Don't get me wrong, Juliana Hatfield has released many many fine records since 1993, but as a solo artist and with bands under her own name (just "Juliana Hatfield", to be exact). The line-up of the Juliana Hatfield Three was and still is, Dean Fisher (bass), Todd Philips (drums) and Juliana Hatfield (vocals, guitars) and it was this lineup that recorded Become What You Are and toured to support that album in 1993 and 1994. The reunited line-up will begin a tour in Portland, ME on February 26th which will take them across the States through most of March. So far, I see no Canadian dates, but they come as close as St. Paul, MN on March 8th, so who knows...a winter road trip? Hopefully someone records some of the shows, please let me know if you see any posted or if you want me to post any live recording here.

As with the last few Juliana Hatfield albums, Juliana reached out to her fans to help finance, Whatever, My Love on PledgeMusic. I've supported every one of her projects and I know it sounds corny, but I'm thrilled I can contribute and help her meet her goal. I benefited by receiving some cool and unique items in exchange for my $$ pledge and basically I'm pre-ordering the end product and get to hear album before the official release date. The album met 117% of it's goal (as of Feb. 8), so it has been recorded, produced and I've been informed the CD has been shipped and the digital download will available in the next day or so. The single and a couple of other songs have been available for listening, but I'm waiting until I can listen to all the tracks at once. I'll keep you posted.

The show I'm posting I found on Dime years ago and showcases the JH3 in their hometown exactly 21 years ago. Here are notes from the original poster (thanks for posting!!): "Very good audience recording of a hometown show in Boston capturing Juliana at the height of her popularity.  Great energy & performance from the trio with some lesser played gems in the setlist.  One of the best shows of the tour and probably her career.  The wacky tracking is the way I received it on CD, feel free to separate & rejoin as you wish.  All told, there are seventeen songs here". I agree, overall it's a very good show and I'm looking forward to hear some live recordings from the upcoming tour!
Enjoy!

Scruffy The Cat- WERS, May 20, 1984

Sad news as I found out earlier today that Charlie Chesterman, frontman for the band, Scruffy The Cat lost his battle with cancer. If you've been following this blog for the past many years, you'll know how much this band meant to me and how influential their music has been in my life. They sit firmly in place in my personal top 5 alongside bands such as YFF, The Replacements, The Kinks, Velvet Underground and Wilco. Though their recorded input was small and consisted of only 2 full length albums and a couple of EP's (plus a split with YFF), their live shows and the live recordings (that I've heard) were outstanding. Charlie Chesterman's output post-Scruffy led to further fine recordings either solo or with his band, Chaz and the Motorbikes. If you have a chance to grab some of his solo recordings, you won't be disappointed. From The Book Of Flames, Studabakersfield and Dynamite Music Machine are highly underrated and Hit This & Kick That is a cool comp of the first three. Recently released (last week) is a collection of hard to find compilation tracks and previously unreleased rarities from Charlie between 1992-2012 called, Solid Gold Electric Chestnut Despenser. This is available for download now at charliechesterman.bandcamp.com. Proceeds go directly to the Friends of Charlie Chesterman Fund.

As a tribute to Charlie, I have some Charlie Chesterman/STC-related live shows to share. I've been collecting Scruffy The Cat live recording since the days of tape/CD trading and I've been downloading any shows I see posted on Dime. I've previously posted a couple of the better Scruffy recordings already and I'll dig around the hard-drive and my multiple "orange boxes" of CD's and see what I have of interest. Stay tuned.

Blake Babies- Live On WERS 1989

Another hotbed for talented bands in the 80's was in and around the Boston area. If you've frequented this blog you'll know I have a keen interest in many bands from this region. I should also clarify I don't live in this area, nor do I even live in this country. It's just that there is a lot of bands for whatever reason I enjoy and still follow from the state of Massachusetts. Some favourite bands that I have (or haven't yet) featured on TDIT from include: Pixies, Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr, Buffalo Tom, Belly, Big Dipper, Scruffy The Cat, Mission Of Burma, The Breeders, Volcano Suns and Juliana Hatfield. Juliana's first band was the Blake Babies who formed in 1986 and gathered a modest following during the late 80's and early 90's and like many of the previously mentioned bands didn't receive much in the way of mainstream radio play, but instead relied primarily on college radio stations to spread the music. And speaking of comebacks, pretty much all the bands I listed have reunited or reformed in recent years and the interest in their earlier works has introduced their music to wider audiences that may have missed them the first time or have only heard them now for the first time.

After disbanding in 1991, the Blake Babies reunited in late 1999 (New Years Eve?) and they toured the U.S. in 2001. I still regret not travelling to Minneapolis in June of 01' to see the Babies (for the last time ever?), but I hope to see Juliana Hatfield again sometime in the future. The show I've posted is the earliest Blake Babies (or Juliana Hatfield) I have and it's a gem of a recording! The band was just hitting their stride with the release of  Earwig and they were still a couple years from their breakthrough album, Sunburn. I received this in a trade over 10 years ago and I've been hoarding it ever since, but I want to share it because it's one of my personal favourites. I don't recall seeing this available anywhere else online, but I'm sure there must be others that have heard or own this recording. This is an in-studio live radio session followed by an interview with the band. The sound quality is excellent and it's another in a series of recordings from Metrowave on WERS at Emerson College that I have previously posted. This is a must listen for any Blake Babies/Juliana Hatfield fans!.

Scruffy The Cat- WERS July 27, 1986

I apologize again, my nights have been busy this past week attending Fringe Festival plays, so I haven't had time to upload much music lately. I have a small window of time right now and by Monday my schedule loosens a little bit, at least for a week.

Here's a live recording I uploaded a while back and meant to post it earlier when I posted several other radio broadcasts from WERS at Emerson College. It's a prime Scruffy the Cat session from 1986 and if you downloaded the previous Scruffy The Cat, Spit And Paulish #9 (A live comp. of Scruffy radio and live songs), tracks 16-19 of that disc are from this broadcast. I'm posting the complete show and if you're a fan of the band this is a keeper because the sound quality is excellent. I was reading on the Scruffy The Cat Facebook fan page and there was discussion about the old Scruffy the Cat site, tinybum.com and how it's not up and running any longer. Apparently the person that operated the site passed away, but you can still access the archive posts for tinybum.com  at the "Wayback machine" at the archive.com site. There are still some active downloads on the music page (including this one in mp3 format), as well as a couple other live shows. I have more Scruffy live shows, please let me know if you want me to hear more.

Juliana Hatfield- Live At Fort Apache 1995

photo by Andrew Kieschnick (Houston 6-15-95)
As I hinted at earlier, here's a Juliana Hatfield show taken from a radio broadcast in 1995. This was a very fruitful time for Juliana who reached alterna-rock stardom with her first two albums and her (then) latest album, Only Everything which would go on to be one of her all-time top selling albums (? or Hey Babe).. Personally, this was my favourite Juliana Hatfield record as she "turned up the volume and the distortion and had a lot of fun", but this album set the bar high for her next project which turned out to be the God's Foot record that never got released. Her songs appeared on soundtracks in popular movies/tv shows, she appeared on magazine covers, countless interviews and she was embraced as a role model for teen girls due to the positive way she addressed serious issues. Though she reached a high point of her popularity, she was never comfortable with the attention and the pressure for her to continue to succeed must have been overwhelming. Her tour for Only Everything was halted and cancelled two weeks in, citing nervous exhaustion and according to her memoir she was in fact suffering from depression. The tour resumed and Only Everything was a hit, but I don't think she ever reached the mainstream attention she did during this period. Which in some ways is a good thing. More recently her career has been a little more low key and off the radar with the hipsters nowadays, but she has released some of her best music since the early days and has done it on her own terms and on her own label. Her true fans have followed her career during her ups and downs and have helped support her through fan contributions with projects like Pledgemusic and have been rewarded with interesting and creative material.

I had an earlier request for the "You Don't Own Me" boot from 1993 (Backstage Tavern, Ballard, WA), but it turned up on Dime so it can be downloaded here. It is a definite upgrade from the cassette copy I had and the sound quality is pretty good considering it sounds like an audience recording. Today's post is from a 1995 show at Fort Apache and was broadcast on WFNX Boston which means the sound is excellent. Not sure if they broadcast the entire concert, but it doesn't matter, get it!
Enjoy!
