Yesterday, I visited my local record store to cash in a gift certificate I received as a Christmas gift. One of my purchases was the The Replacements- Not Ready For Prime Time double live album recorded at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago in 1986. I rarely buy new albums since they're so stupidly expensive ($56!), but they're wasn't better options, plus any live Mats is worth having in my collection. The liner notes written by Bob Mehr, who wrote that very detailed and excellent bio book about the band, mentions the Mat's sound man, Monty Lee Wilkes recorded the set from the board, that was mixed with an audience recording from Chicago taper, Aadam Jacobs for the crowd noise and ambiance. A few weeks back, I read about the Aadam Jacobs Collection that recently (December 1st) had his collection of live recordings posted on the Live Music Archive. In partnership with the Live Music Archive, Jacob's collection is being digitized, with recordings uploaded as they are processed by a volunteer team from the Live Music Archive. Shows have been continually being added and as of this writing, there are 121 shows. Jacobs has been referred to as the "Chicago Taping Guy" who recorded live shows in the 80's, 90's and 2000's, as he attended a dozen or more gigs a month, and has spent decades capturing thousands of performances with an incredible archive of audio tapes. There are roughly 10,000 tapes with approximately 3 sets per tape and likely around 30,000 separate performances. He has basically archived a live history of indie rock shows in Chicago, with local bands as well as early performances from bands that went on to significant fame. The list is impressive so far and I look forward to seeing more bands I'm familiar with. Reading about Jacobs has me thinking I should have taped more and seen way more shows in my life. I'm more picky now and it takes something special for me to see a band, but in my younger days, I loved seeing live music and I didn't start taping until the early 90's and wish I recorded some great gigs in the 80's. After reading more articles about Jacob's legacy (links below), I am so inspired by his work and WOW, this guy's my hero!

What originally got my attention about the Aadam Jacobs Collection was a post on a Scruffy The Cat fan site on Facebook that there were several Scruffy shows in the collection. Recorded at the Cubby Bear and the Lounge Ax in Chicago, I hadn't heard or seen these shows available before. You can listen to the concerts, whole or in part and it's downloadable in mp3 or 24 bit Flac. I've downloaded the shows and they sound fabulous, definitely a treasure trove for Scruffy fans and thanks so much for the team making these available. I'm posting the first of the Scruffy The Cat shows posted (interesting to note: supporting band for this gig was the Young Fresh Fellows, hope their set was recorded too!), offering it up in the original 24-bit version and the (smaller file and sounds just as good) 16-bit version. I may post more from the collection, but you should check out the link to see updates (more recordings!) on the Live Archive page.

Scruffy The Cat- Live On WBCN, Boston, MA 1989

It's been a while, over a month since my last post. In fact, I missed all of July due to being employed full time+ working in the film industry as a set buyer. I'm all done (for now) and it's back to normal life without the 10-12 hour days with little or no weekends off. It's been only a couple of days since this job ended, but it's a relief I can sit back and enjoy the rest of my summer and just in time to take in some serious NHL playoff action. I can also get back to browsing for and listening to music and having a beer or two without worrying about getting to bed early because I have to get up at an obscene hour. The job had it's good points, I did a lot of shopping and browsing in thrift stores, rented a lot of cool and unique items and I spend a majority of time driving to source products or get them to set on time. I also did listen to a lot of music while driving and though this might sound relaxing, it wasn't. Unfortunately, I spent way too much time inside of Walmarts and dollar stores than anyone should, so wearing a face covering mask was wise choice. It was an interesting 5 weeks, even for the experience (and the money was good!) and I would probably do it again if something like this becomes available again. For now, back to what I do best in semi-retirement, making art, playing music and watching hockey!

Most importantly I can get back to posting on this blog again which remains one of my passions along with the other things I previously mentioned. I really haven't had the time or energy to write for the past month, but I have some ideas of some future posts that I will make time to pursue. One of the shows I had uploaded before the break is this short radio broadcast featuring a TDIT favourite, Scruffy The Cat live in studio in Boston from 1989. This was recorded in the last year of Scruffy's career including some songs the band never released. As noted below, an early version of Love Song #9, listed here as, Talking To Myself was the last official recording the band released (split 7" with the Young Fresh Fellows). A great sounding recording that I don't think has been shared before (?) is a must-hear for any Scruffy The Cat fans. Great memories, great band!

Charlie Chesterman- Demos

Today marks the 5th anniversary of the passing of Scruffy the Cat frontman, Charlie Chesterman. His music lives on with recent releases of the Scruffy the Cat compilation, Time Never Forgets and the rarities, unreleased tracks album, The Good Goodbye. Worth checking out are the many albums Charlie recorded after Scruffy, several solo albums as well as records with Chaz and the Motorbikes. His solo recording output far exceeds the Scruffy the Cat releases, so there is much good music to discover. Just before his passing, the compilation, Solid Gold Electric Chestnut Dispenser (a collection of hard to find rarities) was available for download in October of 2013 with proceeds going directly to the Friends of Charlie Chesterman fund. The year before, Chorus Vs. Solos: A Tribute to Charlie Chesterman was sold to help him and his family while he was battling cancer. Needless to say, this man was well loved by his fans, friends and family. Check out the charliechesterman bandcamp page for all his post Scruffy releases to purchase or listen.

What I have is music by Charlie Chesterman not available on any of the compilations or was ever released (as far as I know). It's a disc of demos that I received many years ago from a friend that knew Charlie. (Hint: His band's debut album was produced by Charlie Chesterman!) The songs are demos recorded in a studio, mainly just Charlie and his guitar (with some harmonica), raw demo versions of some songs that appeared later and some I don't think were ever recorded. Off the top of my head, there's early versions of Where'd You Go (from Dynamite Music Machine), If I Had A Heart (from Studabakersfield), Last Summer Night (from Skunk On The Loose). I don't have much information, nor do I have a date when these were recorded, but I suspect it would have been sometime between the end of Scruffy the Cat and his first solo record, so probably early 1990's. If anyone has information about the recording dates and the tracks, please let us know. I'm sure these recordings will be of much interest for Chesterman/STC fans and I hope that sharing these demos is cool. I thought now was an appropriate time to finally share these rare demos.

Day 11: Scruffy The Cat- Live In Philadelphia 1987

As we head towards the home stretch of the 12 Days of Trouble challenge, I thought I would squeeze in another impromptu post that I hadn't originally planned for. I couldn't complete this series without including my favourite band from the Boston area (there are a lot of great bands from Boston I like a lot!), Scruffy The Cat. It's been almost five years ago since frontman, Charlie Chesterman passed away and his memory and the amazing music he and his band shared will never be forgotten. Scruffy the Cat produced a modest amount of officially recorded music, but browsing through the band's gigography reveals how much they toured and played live shows. They solidly toured non-stop from 1984-1990 without much breaks for recording, they released two EP's and two full length albums during that period. According to the tour schedule, I saw Scruffy the Cat on June 5, 1988 at the Rendezvous opening for Vancouver's, 54-40. I went to the show specifically to see Scruffy (I left shortly after 54-40 began) and they made such an impression on me I regret not seeing them earlier, apparently they played Winnipeg twice before in 1987, shit!

Trust me, Scruffy the Cat were the opening band. They were worth the $12 alone!

I was flipping through the Scruffy The Cat live recordings that I haven't posted yet and came across this show from 1987 that was only labelled with the venue and date. I got this off Dime a number of years ago and I honestly don't remember taking the time to listen, but I tracked down the file on an older hard-drive for the setlist and flac files. I played it last weekend and it's a good sounding soundboard recording that's super clear and the performance is energetic. This night they were opening for Alex Chilton and it's a bit unusual for the opening band to play encores and play for over 70 minutes...good for us! Interesting setlist with songs from the then forthcoming EP, Boom Boom Boom Bingo and some early versions of songs from Moons of Jupiter that would be released later in 1988. A very enjoyable set that put a smile on my face and I'm sure I can dig up more Scruffy shows in the future if there's a demand to hear more.

Here's another fine Scruffy the Cat live recording I've been meaning to share for a while. This recording boasts excellent sound and this show (not necessarily this actual recording?) was recorded for the Boom Boom Boom Bingo EP. The versions of Shadow Boy, Runaway and Happiness To Go from this show appear on the EP. I received this in a trade and take note this is the late show and not to be confused with the early all-ages show from the same date that was posted on the old Scruffy the Cat page mp3 section (check it here through archive.org Wayback Machine) which believe it or not are still active!

For all you Scruffy the Cat fans this is a must "listen to" live recording! A classic!

Here's a rare Charlie Chesterman solo acoustic show when he was in Scruffy the Cat from 1986. He performs some STC songs along with lots of new material I don't even know the titles of. If you can help out with some titles of the songs with question marks (?), let me know. Without a band, the performance is a cool up-close and personal show and though he has trouble remembering songs and having difficulty choosing songs to play, this show is special because I'm not sure if Charlie did a lot of solo shows when he was still in Scruffy? (maybe you fans from MA might have better insight on this?)

I got this disc in a trade many years ago and I thought it would be of interest because I haven't seen this posted online. The last show I posted (WERS 1984) along with several other Scruffy The Cat live recordings have recently been re-seeded and posted on Dime, but if you want me to post any of those shows here (especially if you aren't a Dimeadozen member), I can. Regardless, I'll post some more Chesterman/Scruffy The Cat shows that haven't been shared yet to continue my week long tribute to Charlie.

Scruffy The Cat- WERS, May 20, 1984

 Sad news as I found out earlier today that Charlie Chesterman, frontman for the band, Scruffy The Cat lost his battle with cancer. If you've been following this blog for the past many years, you'll know how much this band meant to me and how influential their music has been in my life. They sit firmly in place in my personal top 5 alongside bands such as YFF, The Replacements, The Kinks, Velvet Underground and Wilco. Though their recorded input was small and consisted of only 2 full length albums and a couple of EP's (plus a split with YFF), their live shows and the live recordings (that I've heard) were outstanding. Charlie Chesterman's output post-Scruffy led to further fine recordings either solo or with his band, Chaz and the Motorbikes. If you have a chance to grab some of his solo recordings, you won't be disappointed. From The Book Of Flames, Studabakersfield and Dynamite Music Machine are highly underrated and Hit This & Kick That is a cool comp of the first three. Recently released (last week) is a collection of hard to find compilation tracks and previously unreleased rarities from Charlie between 1992-2012 called, Solid Gold Electric Chestnut Despenser. This is available for download now at charliechesterman.bandcamp.com. Proceeds go directly to the Friends of Charlie Chesterman Fund.

As a tribute to Charlie, I have some Charlie Chesterman/STC-related live shows to share. I've been collecting Scruffy The Cat live recording since the days of tape/CD trading and I've been downloading any shows I see posted on Dime. I've previously posted a couple of the better Scruffy recordings already and I'll dig around the hard-drive and my multiple "orange boxes" of CD's and see what I have of interest. Stay tuned.

I apologize again, my nights have been busy this past week attending Fringe Festival plays, so I haven't had time to upload much music lately. I have a small window of time right now and by Monday my schedule loosens a little bit, at least for a week.

Here's a live recording I uploaded a while back and meant to post it earlier when I posted several other radio broadcasts from WERS at Emerson College. It's a prime Scruffy the Cat session from 1986 and if you downloaded the previous Scruffy The Cat, Spit And Paulish #9 (A live comp. of Scruffy radio and live songs), tracks 16-19 of that disc are from this broadcast. I'm posting the complete show and if you're a fan of the band this is a keeper because the sound quality is excellent. I was reading on the Scruffy The Cat Facebook fan page and there was discussion about the old Scruffy the Cat site, tinybum.com and how it's not up and running any longer. Apparently the person that operated the site passed away, but you can still access the archive posts for tinybum.com  at the "Wayback machine" at the archive.com site. There are still some active downloads on the music page (including this one in mp3 format), as well as a couple other live shows. I have more Scruffy live shows, please let me know if you want me to hear more.

Scruffy The Cat Reunion 2011!

The first reunion show for Scruffy the Cat in 21 years took place at TT the Bears in Boston on Sunday. I would have loved to have been in Boston since Scruffy the Cat was one of my favourite bands in the 80's (right up there with the Replacements and Young Fresh Fellows) and a certain hockey game on Monday night would have been a bonus and worth the trip to Beantown.

Young Fresh Fellows vs. Scruffy The Cat

Since Scruffy is scheduled to reunite for a show in June, I thought I would offer up a rare-ish piece of 7" vinyl. Here's a one-off release featuring a split single featuring two of my favourite bands, Scruffy The Cat and Young Fresh Fellows. I have most of their official releases and I enjoy it all, but these two bands stand out in my mind because of their incredible live shows. I saw Scruffy The Cat at the Le Rendez-Vous in Winnipeg opening for Vancouver band, 54-40. Suffice to say, I left after the Scruffy set and didn't stick around to see 54-40, I saw what I came for and the 35-40 minutes of STC's frantic set was well worth the money! Their energetic show had me wish I saw them in a smaller venue as the headliner and I regret not seeing them a year or two later in an Osborne Street bar. The Fellows are always a great live band and unfortunately I've only seen them also as an opening band. In Winnipeg, in 1990 (?) with the Hoodoo Gurus and in 1992 opening for They Might Be Giants at the legendary Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. Definitely some of my fondest concert memories and all these shows left a lasting impression that had a huge impact on the music I listen to.

This 7" featured exclusive songs from both bands, as the Scruffy the Cat side is what I think is their last song they ever released (correctly if I'm wrong). The Fellows song is amazing, one of my favourites. Fun, super short, but sweet!!

Scruffy The Cat- Tiny Days

Here's some more music you should hear, the first full-length LP from Boston's, Scruffy The Cat. In the mid-80s, there was a local public access program called, Alternative Rockstand. The show was cheesy and low-budget with it's glasses-wearing geeky host that occasionally interviewed bands, but basically he played alternative/punk music with weird graphics or the album cover floating around the screen while the host sat in a chair in studio. Despite it's crappy look, the show actually featured some pretty decent music and on one of the episodes he played, My Baby She's Allright from the Tiny Days album. A great catchy rockin' song that instantly got my attention and led me to my local record store to track down the album.

To this day, Tiny Days is one of my favourite albums and as a bonus I have an autographed record jacket of Tiny Days framed on my wall. I put this album and the Young Fresh Fellows, Topsy Turvy on a TDK SA90 tape and I swear it's my most played tape in my collection. In those days (before iPods or mp3 players), you had to duplicate your albums onto cassette so you can play them away from home (the turntable), in the car or on the Walkman. I saw Scruffy when they opened for 54-40 (Canadian band from Vancouver) back in 1987 or 88, I didn't give a shit about 54-40 as I only went to see Scruffy The Cat's way too short set. That amazing 30 or 40 minutes confirmed my love of Scruffy, a great live band that I wish I had the opportunity to see them play a headline set before they broke up.
