The Jayhawks- Live At The First Avenue 1994

According to the Jayhawks official Facebook page, the Jayhawks have played 70 times on the mainstage at the First Avenue and the 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis. Their first ever show at the venue was at the Entry opening for Alex Chilton on February 21, 1985. Through the years, the band has made it a regular habit to grace the stage of the First Avenue almost every year often for multi-night runs. To say they're a regular or like family at the First Avenue, would be an understatement. The Jayhawks are a very important band in the Twin Cities scene and they have continued to release new material with or without Mark Olson in the band. Gary Louris has kept the Jayhawks active continuing to constantly tour and like most bands have had to postpone tour dates to the fall and the new year (2021). It was announced today their latest album, XOXO will be released on July 10th.

When the Jayhawks played at the First Avenue in November of 1994, they were performing new material that would appear on their next and arguably their best album, Tomorrow The Green Grass which was released on February 14, 1995. This show has an excellent setlist if you're a fan of their earlier material, featuring songs from Hollywood Town Hall (or is this their best?), Blue Earth and even a song from the first album (King of Kings). There was already a buzz about the band at this point and they were on the edge of even wider exposure potential with this "new" material. This era of the band (classic Olson/Louris era) helped give the band it's lasting legacy and helped reinforce the "No Depression", alt-country-rock Americana sound that I enjoyed a lot in the 90's. This is a great concert and the live recording is near perfect, a good sounding board tape for sure!
Enjoy!

Blue Shadows- Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto 1994

Since I'm officially going to be laid off from my work starting April 1 (no joke!) because in my province, all non-critical and essential services and business will close at least for the next two weeks. I'm not too torn up about it yet, and though I'm no psychic, I'm guessing these closures will be extended longer. For how long, it's anyone's guess. The good news is it is allowing me more time to browse through my collection of shows to post new material on the blog. I also have a bit of a backlog of shows I've uploaded, but haven't posted yet. I might have lost interest or enthusiasm for the show or something more interesting or timely came up. Anyways, it should mean more posts in the upcoming weeks as I'll try to make time to write and listen to even more music. Fun times! I hope...at least until the money runs dry.

When you think of Vancouver's, Blue Shadows, country music comes to mind, right? Yes and no, and it isn't a bad thing. I'm not a huge fan of country music in general, but the Blue Shadows are in a wider genre: alt country, folk, rock. You can't help but think of the Everly Brothers with some amazing harmonies from vocalists, Billy Cowsill and Jeffrey Hatcher and a tight band with a touch of rockabilly and 50's rock. Everyone knows the story of Billy Cowsill who co-formed the Cowsills in the mid-60's and stayed active in the music scene through five decades. Cowsill considers his time in the Blue Shadows as his most positive experience as a musician to that point in his career. The driving and creative force of the Blue Shadows was Jeffrey Hatcher, a Winnipegger who relocated to Vancouver (but is back in the Peg) who brought his immense talent to the forefront with some great songs. Hatcher enjoyed modest success with his band, Jeffrey Hatcher and the Big Beat in the 80's and has more recently reunited with his brothers with The Fuse, a band that pre-dated the Big Beat. It really is a shame the Blue Shadows only released two albums due to Cowsill's addictions that broke up the band. I highly recommend you seek out those two albums, On The Floor Of Heaven and Lucky To Me. The deluxe edition of On The Floor Of Heaven features a bonus second disc of outtakes and covers the band recorded.

The live recording from the Horseshoe in 1994 captures the band in fine form that was professionally recorded and aired on CBC radio. The sound is outstanding and the performance is flawless with Hatcher and Cowsill at their harmonizing best. Thanks again to stevemtl who recorded this concert on the radio and transferred and posted the show to Dime. I have many CBC radio broadcasts from this time period on cassette masters, so thanks stevemtl for taking the time to post. There was talk and interest that (allegedly) this recording would be released as a bonus live disc packaged with the reissue of Luck To Me, but unfortunately the label folded so the project didn't happen. Such a shame!

Art Bergmann- Live on Granville Island: Day 7

Art Bergmann by James O'Mara (1990)
One of the joys of running this music blog is actually knowing someone out there is reading the blog and hopefully share a similar taste in music. Another joy would be money and income, but that was never a goal or reason to start this site. In an offbeat way I compare it to when I volunteered coaching hockey (many, many years ago!), where you weren't paid to do it, in fact it cost more money than I could afford, but it was rewarding because I loved it and I learned even more about the sport and the people involved. This blog is an opportunity to share music you might not otherwise discover while relying on commercial radio and mainstream media. Because I love it so much, I constantly listen to live concert recordings, music new and old and of course, records I buy on impulse at record shops.

I welcome emails with your questions and suggestions, and though sometimes I'm not very helpful, I am encouraged by your input. I recently received an email from a reader (Rick) with a live recording from Vancouver's, Art Bergmann he recorded off the radio and recently converted to mp3 from cassette. I must admit I haven't thought about Art Bergmann for a while, probably in the mid-90's, but I was a big fan of his first three solo albums and his previous bands which include, Young Canadians (previously know as the K-Tels), a great band I posted about previously (No Escape). Art was a key figure in the late 70's Canadian punk scene and his solo material had that "heart on your sleeve" feel to it. Though Art enjoyed modest commercial success in the late 80's/early 90's, he never quite got his due or reached that pinnacle of success he deserved. Art has been active recording albums and playing the odd show. He took a break through most of the 2000's due to health issues, but more recently in 2016 he released an album with new material, The Apostate. Right now, he's working on his latest album due for release on his new label home, Porterhouse Records in 2020. The album, Late Stage Empire Dementia is seeking funds to help cover the recording and mastering process with the goal to provide digital downloads of the album. You can help out by donating to the Gofundme fundraiser for Art Bergmann's new album.

The Art Bergmann show Rick sent me (he says he was at the show too!) is from 1994 (or 1993?) recorded at the Arts Theatre Backstage Lounge on Granville Island in Vancouver. It is a live radio broadcast for the station's, 101 Unplugged Series, this is not an unplugged concert! Art has a full electric band, but the cover charge for the show was $1.01...get it? The onstage radio host interrupts a few times, but it doesn't take away from the energy and intensity of the band on stage. This is a smoking hot show, the sound quality is excellent and Bergmann is a little snarly, but goes with the flow as they run through several songs from their then-upcoming album, What Fresh Hell Is This?, released at least a year later. After listening to the show I regret not seeing him live back in the 90's (I'm positive he toured through here) and wouldn't turn down an opportunity to see him now. Thanks again to Rick for the show, fine choice.
Enjoy!

New Duncan Imperials- The Albert, September 15, 1994

In mid-January of this year a local news story caught my attention, "New owner of Royal Albert isn't ruling out reviving famed music venue". The Royal Albert Arms hotel was up for auction a couple of months ago after failed attempts to reopen the once notorious hotel/bar/music venue. In 2007, pharmacist Daren Jorgenson purchased the Albert and intended to convert it to a boutique hotel. It has been closed since a water leak closed the restaurant and hotel along with many controversies surrounding the ownership and shady dealings related to the building. I thought perhaps the new owners might demolish the building to build condos or more parking for the area, so I was pleasantly surprised by the news the Albert could be back. It has since been announced Alycia's restaurant will open soon at the Albert. If you're from Winnipeg you would be familiar with Alycia's which was an institution in the North End for decades serving the city's best perogies and cabbage rolls.

If you were a fan of loud indie-rock, punk or weird alt-music in the 1980's-early 2000's, you would be familiar with the Albert. It was a small grungy, decent place to see upcoming and touring alternative bands that weren't popular enough to fill the Pyramid or Spectrum or too alternative for the mainstream. When bands weren't playing the bar, it was a sketchy half empty joint except for old regulars, but was packed on draft night, bands or not. The next door bar, Wellington's had a similar vibe musically, but I always thought of Wellington's as the scarier version of the Albert, if that's possible. I've seen many great bands and shows at the Albert in the day. Green Day before they went major label, the Weakerthans, Nova Mob, Monsula, Liquor Giants, Plumtree, New Duncan Imperials and many other punk bands I can't remember well before I started taping bands. Unfortunately, I didn't see Soul Asylum or Husker Du when they played there in the mid-80's.

The band that I most associate with the Albert was the always entertaining, New Duncan Imperials from Chicago.  i don't know why, but the band clearly had a love for the city and more specifically for the Albert. Before I even saw them live, I heard that they played annually at the Albert since their days when the three members of NDI were in the band, The Service. They traditionally, at least in the early days to the mid-90's, played three consecutive nights and played two sets a night. Back in the old days bands in bars played multiple sets instead of opening warmup bands. I've seen NDI at least four times, the first show in 1994 and I must say they were one of the best live bands I've ever seen. At least, dollar for dollar they were the best value for your entertainment dollar because I think the cover charge was only $5. The small crammed stage was filled with props, bras hung across the front and back of the stage and a big furry velour monster (complete with moving mouth and lit up eyes) that was terrifyingly cuddly. They tossed out lots of "free stuff" such as noise makers, confetti, silly string and they gave away a real velour shirt after the velour sex dance dance off. If your idea of a good time is watching 3 guys in straw hats and baby blue tuxedos rocking out to the White trash Boogie, the New Duncan Imperials are a must-see! A little politically incorrect at times (by today's standards), it's funny as hell non-stop action that must be seen to believed. They are amazing to see once or twice, but after the third or fourth time, their shtick does repeat itself, but who cares! They played their final show ever in 2011, but they have reunited since, so who knows maybe they'll be back to christen the "new" Royal Albert when it re-opens. Keep your fingers crossed!!

This live recording was my first ever recording on my Sony recording Walkman almost 24 years ago. The sound is actually pretty good considering I was squeezed tightly in the crowd on the small Albert dance floor. Lots of crowd noise, but it adds to the excitement and craziness of the show. Listening to it now really brings back a lot of great memories and it does have that "feels like you're there" sound. I converted my cassette master to FLAC for your listening pleasure. They play two sets, the break is between track 15 and 16, in case you're burning to disc.
Enjoy!

The Juliana Hatfield Three- The Avalon, Boston, MA February 9, 1994

It's been twenty two years since the Juliana Hatfield Three released the album, Become What You Are and later this month, February 17th to be exact, they are releasing the long awaited follow-up, Whatever, My Love. Don't get me wrong, Juliana Hatfield has released many many fine records since 1993, but as a solo artist and with bands under her own name (just "Juliana Hatfield", to be exact). The line-up of the Juliana Hatfield Three was and still is, Dean Fisher (bass), Todd Philips (drums) and Juliana Hatfield (vocals, guitars) and it was this lineup that recorded Become What You Are and toured to support that album in 1993 and 1994. The reunited line-up will begin a tour in Portland, ME on February 26th which will take them across the States through most of March. So far, I see no Canadian dates, but they come as close as St. Paul, MN on March 8th, so who knows...a winter road trip? Hopefully someone records some of the shows, please let me know if you see any posted or if you want me to post any live recording here.

As with the last few Juliana Hatfield albums, Juliana reached out to her fans to help finance, Whatever, My Love on PledgeMusic. I've supported every one of her projects and I know it sounds corny, but I'm thrilled I can contribute and help her meet her goal. I benefited by receiving some cool and unique items in exchange for my $$ pledge and basically I'm pre-ordering the end product and get to hear album before the official release date. The album met 117% of it's goal (as of Feb. 8), so it has been recorded, produced and I've been informed the CD has been shipped and the digital download will available in the next day or so. The single and a couple of other songs have been available for listening, but I'm waiting until I can listen to all the tracks at once. I'll keep you posted.

The show I'm posting I found on Dime years ago and showcases the JH3 in their hometown exactly 21 years ago. Here are notes from the original poster (thanks for posting!!): "Very good audience recording of a hometown show in Boston capturing Juliana at the height of her popularity.  Great energy & performance from the trio with some lesser played gems in the setlist.  One of the best shows of the tour and probably her career.  The wacky tracking is the way I received it on CD, feel free to separate & rejoin as you wish.  All told, there are seventeen songs here". I agree, overall it's a very good show and I'm looking forward to hear some live recordings from the upcoming tour!
Enjoy!

Radish- Hello

The first thing you notice when you listen to the first track of Radish's Hello, is how young the singer sounds. What is he, 12 or 13 years old? Actually he is, the singer is a young Ben Kweller who was 12 when he formed Radish. Hello was recorded when he was 13, a pretty amazing accomplishment for anyone, especially an eighth grader. This isn't a prefabricated gimmicky act like that Bieber kid, but a talented musician that had a dozen songs under his belt by the time he was nine and won an honorable mention in a songwriting contest sponsored by Billboard magazine. In 1993, Ben Kweller formed Radish with drummer John Kent and bassist Ryan Green (he was later replaced by Bryan Bradford) and played in and around Greenville, TX. They released two independent releases, Hello and Dizzy before they signed to Mercury records and in 1997 recorded the full length album, Restraining Bolt. What I've posted is the hard to find debut from Ben Kweller and his band Radish, Hello, and it gives an early indication of his musical talent that would lead to bigger and better things. It's pretty evident he has the chops and he displays his confident solid songwriting style. The quality of the songs and recordings improve with every release, especially on Restraining Bolt, which earned the band a large cult following in England and they toured Europe several times. I will also post the second Radish album, Dizzy and possibly Restraining Bolt, if there is interest. Please leave me a comment or email me if you want more Radish! Enjoy! RADISH Hello (1994)

Before We Was Famous: THE REFRESHMENTS- Wheelie

The other day I was thinking about starting another music blog where I would upload and share CD's/tapes/albums from artists that have gone on to successful careers. This blog would include demos, independent and hard to find releases (I've found on the world wide web or from my own collection) that might not be their most cohesive or flattering moments, but nevertheless interesting and a foreshadowing of what was to come. I've already done this with past postings from the Dead Milkmen, Young Fresh Fellows, Plumtree, Ben Kweller and the Electrocutes. I thought another blog would keep that theme separate and a nice complement to this site. Then it struck me, who was I kidding... I can hardly keep this blog updated and then I would have 3 (counting my other blog, Sick Puppy) stagnant properties taking up space on the WWW. So bare with me as I present yet another regular feature on TADIT, "Before We Was Famous".

Just the other day I was looking through a pile of CD's (in my son's room that he "borrowed") and came upon a much loved and much played disc I had almost lost track of, the Refreshments, Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy. This CD along with their other official release, The Bottle & Fresh Horses, are underrated classics that have all the hallmarks of great albums; catchy melodies, humour and memorable songs. Years ago I heard there was a pre-Fuzzy disc called, Wheelie which was their true debut and was sold at shows. Reports of it's rarity are varied depending on who you talk to. I've heard there was 500-2000 copies floating around, but according to Refreshment's bassist Art Edwards he believes there are no more than 5500 copies in existence. Supposeably it's fetching big bucks on eBay, but thanks to the web I found a mp3 version of the CD and it is well worth the download. The songs on Wheelie were later reworked for Fizzy and sound slightly different, with the exception of the track, Psychosis which is exclusive to this release. The song B.O.B.A is an acronym for, "Buffett on bad acid" and was re-named Mexico when it re-recorded for Fizzy... If you miss the Refreshments as much as I do, check out Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers!
