To celebrate the end of 2025, I have a special treat for the Replacements fans that didn't buy the recent deluxe remastered box-set of the band's third full-length LP from 1984, but wanted to hear the live album (or disc). Due to technical (and possibly legal reasons), I won't refer to the album's title to stay under the radar, if you know what I mean. I am only posting the complete live show that was included with the box-set, and as you know I'm always a sucker for a live concert I haven't heard before. This set is longer and has a better setlist than when they played at the Cubby Bear a month earlier. Though there are "complaints" the sound isn't great here, it's a solid, lively concert with the band in top form. Celebrate the end of year the right way, with a band that released the best reissue of the year!

Replacements- Let It Be Deluxe Remaster Coming Soon!...& The Other Cubby Bear Show, July 1984

 

I feel I've been out of the loop music-wise this summer, without attending any live music concerts and limiting my record buying to a minimal. I'm still listening to a lot of music and though I haven't been thrilled with anything new lately, a bit of news about an upcoming Replacements box-set has peaked my interest. The band's 1984 classic album, Let It Be is finally getting the deluxe box treatment with the standard remastering of the original record, outtakes and unreleased songs, as well as a live show from Chicago in 1984. There isn't going to be a transformative re-mix similar to Tim and Don't Tell A Soul because no one had a problem with how Let It Be sounded and I say just, let it be. I slightly regret not buying the Tim: Let It Be Edition because the re-mix sounds great (here's a great album that truly suffered from a shitty mix), but I did buy the vinyl live album (Cabaret Metro, Chicago 1986) separately that was included on the Tim box. I did not regret that decision.

 

  

I have to admit, Let It Be is probably my favourite Replacements album and when I first heard it (I bought the LP in Minneapolis, of course), it elevated my love of the band. I had previously heard a couple of songs from Tim (just after it was released), so I wanted to hear more. In those pre-internet, pre-streaming days the option was to buy the physical records, I went and bought all the band's catalogue up to that point, no regrets! When I finally saw the group live at Midway in St. Paul during the reunion thing, the most moving moment for me was when they played Unsatisfied. It was definitely one of my most satisfying and memorable concert moments ever.

 

Not sure if I need to buy the deluxe remaster, but I am curious to hear the live recording from the Cubby Bear in Chicago, on August 1984. It claims to be an unreleased 28 song performance sourced from an audience tape and remastered. I haven't heard this recording, but as a teaser, I'm posting a show at the same venue from a month earlier. The July set was recorded by Aadam Jacob and I'm guessing the August show, included in the box might be as well. It'll be interesting to compare the band's "progress/growth" over a month and I'm also wondering if it's an opening vs headline set. Set your watches for October 24th.

Violent Femmes- Hallowed Ground Live 40 Years Ago- May 16, 1984

 

 Tonight, the Violent Femmes are bringing, "An Evening With Violent Femmes" tour to Winnipeg to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band's second album, Hallowed Ground. The setlist will consist of performing both the self-titled debut album (released 41 years ago) and Hallowed Ground back to back in it's entirety. Due to unfortunately, being out of town and living on a low budget (see lyrics from the Kinks song), I turned down the opportunity to buy tickets and though I'm not kicking myself in regret, it would have been a cool concert. Yes, I'm being cheap, but to help me ease my sorrows, I had a listen to a show from (almost) 40 years ago to this date when the Femmes embarked on the original Hallowed Ground tour. The album was released on May 14th, 1984 and though I now consider the record one of their best, at the time I wasn't so sure. The debut album was so good and if you read my recent post about that album's 40th anniversary show, you know what an influence that album had on my life musically and it's affect on my listening preferences. Hallowed Ground had a dark, gothic sound to it and I questioned how religious this album was meant to be. At the time, I didn't like it and didn't buy the album (fear not, I taped it from a friend). Jesus Walking On The Water and It's Gonna Rain have a Sunday school vibe to it, which is interesting...but it has some intense slow burning barn-burners, Hallowed Ground and the eerily creepy, Country Death Song, along with Never Tell, which would have fit in perfectly on the first record. Some of the other tracks teeter on filler, but overall it's solid and worth a listen.

The show I'm posting I snagged from archive (org) and though the sound quality isn't the best, it's an energetic and entertaining show. It's taken from a multi-generation audience cassette recording which sounds pretty typical for the time, a bit trebly with crowd noise, but it has that authentic sound of "being there", which I sometimes enjoy more than clear, but flat sounding board recordings. The setlist is made up of songs from the first two albums (if you excel in math, Hallowed Ground was released 2 days earlier) and the highlight is the last song, Kiss Off with a Pipeline jam in the middle of the song! Thanks to Milocampo for contributing the concert to the archive! Hopefully someone will record the show in Winnipeg tonight (often I'm the only taper at local shows) and if so, I'll post it. (if you record it, let me know!)

Hindu Love Gods- The First Show Athens 1984

 

The original 1984 Hindu Love Gods line-up, Mills, Berry, Cook and Buck.

 

The early success of R.E.M. opened the door to a lot of interesting and very creative music in the 80's. When I first heard the album, Reckoning, it blew my mind! This was music that appealed to my tastes, an alternative sound that wasn't new wave, punk or electronic dance music and it was different than the music that dominated the airways of commercial radio. As a guy that grew up on the sounds of AM radio and classic rock (funny it was already called that in the late 70's), this was fresh and exciting and definitely a musical turning point for me. I listened to bands from this era that would be termed as alternative rock and one of the few places to hear this music was on college music stations or MTV. Because we had no college with a radio station in our city, I bought a lot of records during the 80's, some were hard to find and many were considered "imports" at the local record shops. Listening to music from these bands it opened my ears to the possibilities and it branched off from there. Which led me to side projects, spin-off bands, super groups and collaborations, which led me to bands like, Hindu Love Gods.

The Hindu Love Gods were best known as a collaboration (and R.E.M. side project/supergroup) with Warren Zevon and 3/4 of the members of R.E.M. (Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry). They released a full length album, Hindu Love Gods in 1990 along with a couple of 7" singles. The album was a result of an impromptu late night session while the four were in the midst of recording Zevon's album, Sentimental Hygiene in 1986. The members of R.E.M. were Zevon's backing band and the material from those recording sessions were electric blues covers. It wasn't intended to be released, but it was in 1990, along with the single, Raspberry Beret, a Prince cover. Their first single, Narrator was recorded in 1984 (released in 86) with Buck, Mills, Berry, Zevon and Bryan Cook, who was a member of a couple local bands. 

 

The band performed under the name Hindu Love Gods four times (?). The first, the lineup with Cook (without Zevon), the second, two weeks later, with Zevon (without Cook) and the third, a gig in June 1984 with Cook (no Warren). One more show under the HLG name was a benefit show in 1986 for the family of D. Boon of the Minutemen with the line-up of Michael Stipe, Buck, Mills, Berry and Cook. The concert I'm posting is the first ever Hindu Love Gods show (pre-Zevon) with Bryan Cook on vocals (not my live recording). The set is mainly covers, except for Narrator, so it's very cool to hear instrumentals, an Alex Chilton song and NY Dolls and Replacements covers. The sound quality of the live recording is good, a decent soundboard recording. Nowadays, Buck continues to be the most active and occasionally plays alongside Mike Mills in the Baseball Project and the Minus 5. I've seen live videos with Berry guesting with both bands, while Stipe is supposedly working on a record after the 2020 release of a couple of songs. Glad to hear they're all still playing music!

Young Fresh Fellows- Live Acoustic In Seattle 1984

 

 

I think a good way to end the year would be live recording from the Young Fresh Fellows. Despite the uncertainty in our world this past year, it was a very productive year with several Scott McCaughey/Fellows-related releases. New releases from the:

As well, Scott appeared on a new ep from the Junior League (Summer of Lies) and maybe there were others. A new Young Fresh Fellows record was a much needed breath of fresh air this year. The album's release date was pushed back a couple times to coincide with Record Store Day and it was finally released during the third RSD on October 24th. I ended up buying from a seller on Discogs (no regrets!), so I didn't get a vinyl copy of the album for a few weeks later (on bright toxic green colour vinyl!). It's an excellent record, definitely one of my favourites of the year and might be their best album since, Because We Hate You or even, Electric Bird Digest! Unfortunately, live shows were a no go this year, so hoping to see YFF/Scott play some live shows in the near future. I see the No Ones have already booked some live dates from the spring of 2022, I'm optimistic there will be more live shows way before then. Fingers crossed! 

 

 

For the final post of 2020, I've unearthed a live recording from the Young Fresh Fellows from 1984. This is a rare acoustic performance from the early days after the release of their debut album, The Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest and includes a couple songs from their next record, Topsy Turvy and an interesting cover of Elvis Costello's, Green Shirt. I don't know much about the lineage of the recording or know how much longer the set was (it cuts during track 13). I received this in a trade many years ago, but it sounds pretty good, I'm always interested in hearing Chuck-era live shows which I don't have a lot of. Season's greetings and happy new year, hopefully 2021 will be a tad bit better. Continue to listen to good music in the new year!

Essential Listen of the week: In a couple days it will be new year's eve, traditionally an evening of celebrating with family, friends and complete strangers, but this year will be significantly different. Some of my favourite live concert recordings are from new year's eve shows with the countdown and sometimes bands kick it up a notch with a unique show (Local H for example is know for their "themed" shows). Some years back I posted a Young Fresh Fellows NYE show from 1987, that is special to me, not only because it was the first YFF live show I received in a trade, but because it is very cool. I only wish this was a complete set, but regardless there isn't a better way to bring in the new year!

Remember The Albert? Day 2: Husker Du Live In Winnipeg 1984

Yes, you must remember the Albert? The iconic scuzzy punk rock club on Albert Street inside the Royal Albert Arms Hotel in the historic Exchange area of downtown Winnipeg is back! This club played host to many a crazy show throughout the 80's to well into the 2000's, but with much uncertainty about ownership and many unsuccessful attempts to re-open it finally relaunched as a music venue this past June.

I've written before about some the great bands I've seen pass through the Albert. I've recorded and posted a few, but I also saw bands such as Green Day before my taping days and if I was more in the loop at the time I could have seen Twin Cities bands, Soul Asylum and Husker Du in the mid 80's. The closest I came to seeing the Du at the Albert was Grant Hart's post Husker Du band, Nova Mob who played to a handful of dedicated fans there. My most vivid memory of the show is before the band started playing Hart was peering on the TV screens at the bar watching a music video of Bob Mould's band, Sugar and probably mumbled something sarcastic. Which was a perfect analogy of the two opposite directions each man's career went after the break up of Husker Du. Hart playing small venues in front of dozens of people versus Mould with videos on MTV touring theatre's and concert halls with Sugar or solo around the world.

I came upon this gem on Dime a while back, a live audience recording of Husker Du from early 1984 before the band broke it big (by alt-punk standards of the time) before the release of their classic double album, Zen Arcade. This album was the game changer for the band, though it was not commercially successful, it was the record that took Husker Du from hardcore punk to a more wide range melodic alt-rock punk sound. That album along with the following two records, New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig, I consider the perfect hat trick of LP's. This show previews many songs from Zen as well as songs from their previous discs Metal Circus and Everything Falls Apart. Highlights include some non-album songs, Eight Miles High, Drug Party, Statues and In a Free Land. I didn't record the show, but whoever did, did a decent job despite probably being tossed around by flying bodies in the jam packed Albert. A recording definitely worth a listen at least for historical purposes. This was a soon to be legendary band getting it's feet wet in Winnipeg, Canada in the middle of winter in 1984...doesn't get much better than that!

TDIT Is Back!! Beat Farmers At The Roxy, 1984

It's hard to believe I haven't written a new post in over four months, it's crazy how time flies! I don't really have a legitimate excuse, I haven't been ill, I didn't vacation anywhere warm for the past four months, nor was I physically unable to type on a keyboard. Though it's not really an excuse, I blame the winter blues! Up northward where I live we've suffered one of the harshest, coldest and largest amounts of snowfall in recent memory. On top of that, hundreds of houses are without running water and thousands (including myself) have to run their water tap continuously 24/7 until as late as mid-June to prevent frozen pipes. I Haven't really felt like going out much (actually didn't see a concert in 2013!!) and I've spent the past months nightly glued to the TV watching NHL hockey and the Olympics, though there's nothing wrong with that, right?

Enough with the excuses! Recently I have resumed uploading some live concerts and my goal is transfer some favourite shows I have on tape in attempt to save them to HD, as well as post on the blog. I promise I'll keep this blog more updated and I'm psyched to share some interesting recordings I've downloaded, received in trades and concerts I recorded.

To kick off my first post of 2014, I have a request for more Beat Farmers (thanks Kurt!). This is an early show, before the release of their first album, Tales Of The New West (in my opinion, their best) recorded almost 30 years ago with the original lineup that included Buddy Blue. A great sounding audience recording that accurately captures the blistering live show that the BF's were known for. Wonderful!

Scruffy The Cat- WERS, May 20, 1984

 Sad news as I found out earlier today that Charlie Chesterman, frontman for the band, Scruffy The Cat lost his battle with cancer. If you've been following this blog for the past many years, you'll know how much this band meant to me and how influential their music has been in my life. They sit firmly in place in my personal top 5 alongside bands such as YFF, The Replacements, The Kinks, Velvet Underground and Wilco. Though their recorded input was small and consisted of only 2 full length albums and a couple of EP's (plus a split with YFF), their live shows and the live recordings (that I've heard) were outstanding. Charlie Chesterman's output post-Scruffy led to further fine recordings either solo or with his band, Chaz and the Motorbikes. If you have a chance to grab some of his solo recordings, you won't be disappointed. From The Book Of Flames, Studabakersfield and Dynamite Music Machine are highly underrated and Hit This & Kick That is a cool comp of the first three. Recently released (last week) is a collection of hard to find compilation tracks and previously unreleased rarities from Charlie between 1992-2012 called, Solid Gold Electric Chestnut Despenser. This is available for download now at charliechesterman.bandcamp.com. Proceeds go directly to the Friends of Charlie Chesterman Fund.

As a tribute to Charlie, I have some Charlie Chesterman/STC-related live shows to share. I've been collecting Scruffy The Cat live recording since the days of tape/CD trading and I've been downloading any shows I see posted on Dime. I've previously posted a couple of the better Scruffy recordings already and I'll dig around the hard-drive and my multiple "orange boxes" of CD's and see what I have of interest. Stay tuned.

 Here's a good one! 1984 was a big year for the Replacements, the album, Let It Be was released and the band toured extensively through the states, the mid-West, East coast and the West Coast. Multiple appearances in New York City attracted much attention including the attention of major label reps hoping to sign the band. A couple of the shows at CBGB's have been well documented on this blog (here and here) and if you're a fan of live recordings from the Replacements, 1984 produced some good ones.

One of the better sounding shows of 1984 was a show at Club Lingerie in Hollywood. Not only is sound outstanding (for an earlier show), but the performance is tight, coherent and energized. Considering this is a couple of weeks before the infamous, "Shit Hits The Fans" show and just over a month before the classic drunken CBGB's show, they play it fairly straight with less drunken covers or foolishness and the setlist documents the era perfectly. Yes, this is a good one, get it!
