The Replacements- Goodnight! Go Home! Chicago 1984

(incredible) Photo by Gail Butensky (gailwithacamera)

To celebrate the end of 2025, I have a special treat for the Replacements fans that didn't buy the recent deluxe remastered box-set of the band's third full-length LP from 1984, but wanted to hear the live album (or disc). Due to technical (and possibly legal reasons), I won't refer to the album's title to stay under the radar, if you know what I mean. I am only posting the complete live show that was included with the box-set, and as you know I'm always a sucker for a live concert I haven't heard before. This set is longer and has a better setlist than when they played at the Cubby Bear a month earlier. Though there are "complaints" the sound isn't great here, it's a solid, lively concert with the band in top form. Celebrate the end of year the right way, with a band that released the best reissue of the year!

See you in 2026! Later in the year, I'll be celebrating 20 years (seriously!) here at the Teenage Dogs In Trouble blog! Stay tuned!
Enjoy!

Replacements- Let It Be Deluxe Remaster Coming Soon!...& The Other Cubby Bear Show, July 1984

I feel I've been out of the loop music-wise this summer, without attending any live music concerts and limiting my record buying to a minimal. I'm still listening to a lot of music and though I haven't been thrilled with anything new lately, a bit of news about an upcoming Replacements box-set has peaked my interest. The band's 1984 classic album, Let It Be is finally getting the deluxe box treatment with the standard remastering of the original record, outtakes and unreleased songs, as well as a live show from Chicago in 1984. There isn't going to be a transformative re-mix similar to Tim and Don't Tell A Soul because no one had a problem with how Let It Be sounded and I say just, let it be. I slightly regret not buying the Tim: Let It Be Edition because the re-mix sounds great (here's a great album that truly suffered from a shitty mix), but I did buy the vinyl live album (Cabaret Metro, Chicago 1986) separately that was included on the Tim box. I did not regret that decision.

I have to admit, Let It Be is probably my favourite Replacements album and when I first heard it (I bought the LP in Minneapolis, of course), it elevated my love of the band. I had previously heard a couple of songs from Tim (just after it was released), so I wanted to hear more. In those pre-internet, pre-streaming days the option was to buy the physical records, I went and bought all the band's catalogue up to that point, no regrets! When I finally saw the group live at Midway in St. Paul during the reunion thing, the most moving moment for me was when they played Unsatisfied. It was definitely one of my most satisfying and memorable concert moments ever.

Not sure if I need to buy the deluxe remaster, but I am curious to hear the live recording from the Cubby Bear in Chicago, on August 1984. It claims to be an unreleased 28 song performance sourced from an audience tape and remastered. I haven't heard this recording, but as a teaser, I'm posting a show at the same venue from a month earlier. The July set was recorded by Aadam Jacob and I'm guessing the August show, included in the box might be as well. It'll be interesting to compare the band's "progress/growth" over a month and I'm also wondering if it's an opening vs headline set. Set your watches for October 24th.
Enjoy!

The Replacements- Lake Compounce, Bristol, CT 1989

It's not often I hear a live Replacements soundboard recording I haven't heard before and in this case, I have heard it before. Recently, someone posted on Dime the soundboard recording from a Mats show when they opened up for Tom Petty back in 1989. The sound is excellent and the set is complete (they were the opening set, so short), and if the date and setlist sounds familiar, it's because the show appears on the live compilation (unofficial aka: boot), Shit, Shower and Shave. Actually, the recording below is NOT sourced from Shit, Shower..., but it does sound similar, though the version below includes a few extra seconds at the beginning with Paul and Tommy talking to the crowd before Talent Show. Anyways, this is a must-hear show, not only is the sound quality amazing, the performance is fantastic, especially rare during the Petty tour and the band plays it pretty straight throughout. Which means no drunkenness, sloppy playing and a good solid later era setlist. Very enjoyable!
Enjoy!

Paul Westerberg- RKCNDY, Seattle, WA, July 17, 1993 (30th Anniversary!)

Boy, time sure flies by! My last post was from April (R.E.M.) and I think I posted something else the same day. Apparently, I violated Blogger community guidelines and the post featuring the band, Maow was deleted. This is a band Neko Case was a member of before her solo career and I assume that might be the cause of this take-down. She is adamantly against the recording of her shows (and sharing) and this probably extends to her album work as well. There seems to be no problem with New Pornographers live recordings, a band she is a member of, as I've posted several shows over the years, as they don't have a no taping policy like Neko solo...but Maow? Anyways, the point is I haven't posted much in many months and I apologize.

For fans itching to hear and see another Replacements or Paul Westerberg show, I have no new updates to share and we'll have to be content with past live recordings to keep us satisfied. Another example of how time is flying by, today is the 30th anniversary of a Westerberg show from the tour for his debut solo album. The live recording for the show at RKCNDY in Seattle in 1993 has been shared for years and I actually have the show I acquired in a tape trade that I haven't listened to in a while. The dub (copy) I have is probably multiple generation and the sound quality wasn't great. I seem to remember the volume level was really low and lacked the dynamics of a lower gen recording. Today on Dime, a remastered, fresh 2023 transfer version from an audience master DAT source was posted that is a definite upgrade (thank you slipkid68!!). I'm guessing this is a different capture than the version I have and the sound quality is unbelievably excellent. It seriously sounds as good as a soundboard, but better because the crowd is nicely balanced in the mix. A nice way to celebrate the anniversary of this amazing concert, with a setlist that highlights his first album, 14 Songs, with lots of Replacements songs and a couple covers. I believe the 1993 tour gave us perhaps the best live shows (yes, even including the Replacements) with solid performances and fostered some pretty fine live recordings. If you're craving some live Westerberg or Replacements, this might be the next best thing...for now!

The Replacements- Live at the Longhorn 1980

This past Record Store Day, I only made one purchase, The Replacements, Unsuitable Airplay: The Lost KFAI Concert which I was lucky to pickup at my local bookstore/vinyl record retailer. I know the recording was included with the Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash deluxe CD box set a year or so ago, but I haven't gotten around to buying that yet and it's cool to have this live show on vinyl. The sound is incredible and it's a treat for Mats fans to hear the band's early shows (circa, Sorry Ma...) when they were relatively tight and less drunk. It got me thinking about some other early Replacements shows I had on cassette and through Dime, some suffer from some tape hiss and noise, but most sound pretty good and are worth exploring again.

I found one of their earliest known live recordings (on Dime recently) and it's an amazingly good sounding recording, possibly soundboard and supposedly, this show was about 2 months after Paul Westerberg handed future manager Peter Jesperson a four-song demo. The band opened for The Dads at The Longhorn which included three songs that would wind up on the debut album. The rest of the set was covers that really showed off who their influences were (The Kinks, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers) and though it's a short set, they played with confidence and showed they were ready for bigger and better things. This has been available on the Color Me Impressed: The Replacements Live Archive, but the version I have here is uncompressed and the setlist seems to have a few more songs (is that right?). Anyways, this is essential for Mats fans!

The Replacements- Live At the First Avenue 1986

For the final installment of the mini-tribute to the First Avenue in Minneapolis, we have a band that helped bring national attention to Minneapolis during the 80's (besides Prince). At least in the alternative/indie rock genre, when I think of Minneapolis, I think of the Replacements. They were a semi-regular performer at the First Avenue/7th St. Entry during most of their career since about 1981 and their shows were always much talked about. Fortunately, there are many documented live recordings from these shows that have been shared among fans for years. I never turn down an opportunity to download and listen to a Replacements show because they are never the same, the setlists are always different and depending on the mood (drunkenness) of the band the choice of cover songs could get pretty wild. Of all the bands I collect, I definitely enjoy the Replacements shows the most and though some disappoint, they are never boring or uneventful.

1986 was a pivotal year for the Replacements, they began the year preparing to tour the U.S. East Coast in support of Tim that was released in September 1985. Tim was probably their most critically acclaimed album of their career and the last with Bob Stinson as a member. They were at their peak with the original lineup and playing some of their best shows in 1985 and early 1986. The live recording, Live At Maxwell's recorded on February 4 was released a couple years ago and the sound quality and performance was unbelievably good! Their infamous appearance on Saturday Night Live on January 18th helped secure their legend, but probably prevented the band from gaining more mainstream success. Following their SNL performance, the Replacements returned home to Minneapolis for a pair of shows at the First Avenue. You can find both shows at the Replacements Live Archive Project website (in mp3 format) and I have one of those shows, the second one (January 22) here in lossless format. The recording is a clear, possibly a soundboard, upfront sounding and it's noteworthy because this is Bob Stinson's last show as a Replacement in Minneapolis. As I mentioned earlier, the bands performance is sometimes dictated by the level of alcohol consumption the band partakes in and this is definitely a drunken show. Paul's slurring during between song banter is apparent and the drunken covers dominate the second half of the show. Despite the drunkenness, the set is great and coherently performed and is very entertaining. This does not disappoint!

First Avenue Turns 50! Paul Westerberg- Minneapolis, MN: The Craft 2007

Last Friday April 3, marked the 50th anniversary of the legendary club, The First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. The club opened in April 1970 when it was known as the Depot because previously the building actually was a Greyhound bus station depot. Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen launched the venue with the first ever show at the Depot, as the club become a popular live venue for local and International musicians. The history of the club is a long and sometimes complicated story with several financial disputes, bankruptcy, closure, format/theme changes and name changes. For an informative history of the club, watch the excellent documentary, First Avenue: Closer To the Stars. In 1972, the club changed it's image and the Depot evolved to become Uncle Sam's (Uncle Sam's was a part of a national franchise of the American Events Company) with DJ dance nights and it literally became a massive disco.

It wasn't until 1981 when the club changed it's name to the First Avenue and a year prior they opened the 7th St. Entry side room that the club gained momentum to become something special. The amount of great shows and bands that have played at the First Avenue in the past thirty years is eye popping. The stars painted on the side of the building are just some of the names that have helped propel the First Avenue through the years. There's no doubt that Prince was very responsible for giving the club national recognition and it became a tourist attraction, but the rise of the Minneapolis music scene nationally in the 1980's can be traced to many incredible shows at the corner of First Avenue and 7th St. Besides Prince, there were other great bands that frequently played the club such as the Replacements, Husker Du, Soul Asylum, Suburbs, Trip Shakespeare and the Jayhawks to name only a few. I've had the pleasure of seeing several good shows at the First Avenue, I think the first was in 1997 with Dinosaur Jr and I haven't been back since 2007 when I saw Fountains of Wayne, with lots of cool shows between. Presently, as well as the The First Avenue and 7th St. Entry, the owners also operate the Turf Club and the Palace Theatre in St. Paul and also own the Fine Line in Minneapolis. First Avenue is one of the longest running independently owned and operated clubs in the United States. It appears the club has been doing well except now with COVID-19 the reality of the situation is in jeopardy with mass postponement of concerts in their calendar of events. The hope is that the club (and all clubs!), as well as the music industry will bounce back strong whenever things get back to a near normal in the near future (we can only hope).

For the next few posts as a tribute to the First Avenue, I'll be posting shows from this venue with a range of artists from the Twin Cities and beyond. I probably won't share shows I attended/taped at the clubs mainly because the sound quality isn't great, but there are many must-hear shows at the First Avenue that were recorded.

First up is a show from 2007 from Twin Cities resident, Paul Westerberg who participated in an installment of "The Craft" a Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame interview/performance series. Hosted by writer/musician, Warren Zanes, (formerly of the band, Del Fuegos) he talked to Westerberg about various topics and gave some rare insight into his personal life, music and recording and performing with the Replacements. Between interview segments, Westerberg picked up his guitar and performed ten songs from his solo career and the Replacements. A truly unique concept and concert experience and fortunately Zanes is a knowledgeable fan and interviewer to make a potentially dry event into a memorable evening with one of the most talented singer songwriters of his generation.

Paul Westerberg- APC Studios, Live In Atlanta 1996

I've been listening to a lot of Paul Westerberg recently brought on because someone on Dime has been posting and asking for contributions for recordings from Westerberg's 2002 solo tour through the States (and Toronto). That tour was broken into two parts, the Spring featured performances at record stores, split with a three night run in his hometown of Minneapolis in late June/July, then the tour proceeded in August at concert halls and theatres. I attended and recorded one of the shows in Minneapolis at the Guthrie Theatre and I have several of the shows from both tours, so the Dime revisit/flood was a way to fill in shows I didn't have. I posted one of the record store shows back in 2012,  Happy Record Store Day- Paul Westerberg @ Amoeba Records 2002-04-25 (click HRSD for link to original blog post/ click PW @Amoeba Records...for direct link to show download).

I will get around to posting another show from the 2002 later, but I remembered I uploaded another Westerberg show about 7 years ago that I have since forgot to post. It's a in-studio radio mini-concert at APC Studios in Atlanta, I believe he played a club show later that evening. Recently I had a listen and the sound quality and the performance is excellent. I know generally fans and critics weren't that enthusiastic for Paul's second album, Eventually, but I have to come to appreciate this record has some really good songs on it. Maybe it's because they were hidden behind the slicker production on the album, but live these songs shine much brighter. I actually think this is one of his better solo albums. It's an underrated era in his career where he had a fair bit of mainstream exposure including making several live TV appearances and maybe his last real attempt for mainstream success. Since then (well, maybe after Suicaine Gratification), he has made music more on his terms with less production values and even less commercial appeal and success. Which isn't a bad thing? Anyways, this show from 1996 features a tight band, songs from Eventually, one from 14 Songs as well as three Replacements songs. Well worth a listen!

Paul Westerberg and The Replacements- A Couple Upgrades and Updates

A couple months back I posted the Replacements, Pleased To Meet Me Sessions. Thanks to reader Will, he recognized the version of Tommy Stinson's, If There's Trouble On The Way (track 17), as the copy he had trouble with in his tape deck that crunched the tape. The flaw appears as a momentary gap that apparently I didn't notice or I felt this is as good as it got. He sent me a non-crunched version to post, so if you downloaded the file, substitute in this track as an upgrade. (see below for download)

Will is also offering up an upgrade for Paul Westerberg's solo track, 33rd of July. A 160 kbps version of the song that has been around since 1999 has a glitch at 1m 40s. I sourced a lot of mp3's around that time via file sharing and downloading and I have a disc of Westerberg non-album tracks on a burned cdr. I checked my version and it sounds fine, but Will was tired of the flaw and actually bought the Japanese version of Suicaine Gratification just to get the 33rd of July track.

He has provided the flawless versions of both tracks in Apple lossless m4a format and also I converted the files to FLAC a format I'm more familiar with, so you have a choice. (I used to use box.net for linking single song files, so let's see if it still works. Let me know if there are any problems downloading or playing.)
Enjoy!

Today is Black Friday here in North America, is this a thing worldwide as well? Sounds like another excuse for a over-hyped shopping day or as I like to call it Boxing Day part 1. Today is also Record Store Black Friday which includes a special release, the first vinyl release of Paul Westerberg & Grandpaboy, 2002's double CD, Stereo/Mono. I'm not sure if I'll buy the vinyl version because I have the original double CD release, but in tribute I'm listening the discs as I write this. This album has special meaning to me because I traveled to Minneapolis to see Westerberg (for the first time) play one of his solo shows at the Guthrie Theater on June 30th in support for this album. It was a incredibly intimate concert that I was thrilled to attend and even recorded the show to relive the show whenever I want.

p.s. An update about my Replacements- Dead Man's Pop order: It finally arrive on Tuesday, November 26th! The boxset looks amazing with a nice gatefold that holds the CDs and a album-size booklet with photos and information and history about the recordings. It includes one LP record with the remixed version of Don't Tell A Soul. What it didn't include was the limited cassette of the album with two bonus songs not found elsewhere in the set. I don't want to harp of this too much, but this raises a lot of questions. I started writing a timeline about my wait for arrival (a day before it actually arrived)...indulge me if you dare.
  1. July 21, 2019, placed order with Rhino for presale of Dead Man's Pop boxset. The first 500 presale orders would include a limited edition cassette with some tracks not included in the boxset.
  2. I received a message a day before the release date Sept. 26, that the shipping was delayed with issues with their warehouse. As a consolation, they sent a "courtesy" download of the release with the physical boxset to ship the next week.
  3. I emailed Rhino on October 28 and inquired if it was shipped and when I might expect delivery.
  4. They responded on November 7 with the usual "it has always been and always will be, our mission to provide the best service to fans of our artists. However due to a complex warehouse move we have significant backlog of both customer inquiries and shipments..." They had no idea when the order would be shipped.
  5. Nov. 16, received email saying the order is on the way. In the order summary, the item shipped is  1 QTY- 4 CD/1 LP Deluxe and  0 QTY- Dead Man's Pop cassette. With no indication if the cassette is B/O-ed or if I won't receive one since it is limited.
  6. Nov. 26, arrived! Nearly 2 months after the album was officially released and for sale in local retailers.
The point is I bought this as a presale, I expected to receive it before or when the stores would sell them. When I returned from my trip on October 12th, I saw the boxset in my local bookstore. In fact it is priced about $25 less than I paid for it, plus exchange. So in reality I paid $138 CDN ($104.13 US), in the store it is $89.00 CDN. (That's almost an extra $50). I've been told by friends I should get a refund, but the main attraction of the presale was the extra cassette and is the reason I didn't get it because it shipped so late or was I not one of the first 500 that ordered? I will follow up with Rhino/Warner Music and see if I can get an answer, I doubt it. I'll keep you updated.

More Trouble Boys! The Replacements- Pleased To Meet Me Sessions: Day 4

Yesterday was the release date for the re-imagined remixed version of the Replacement's sixth album, Don't Tell A Soul, Dead Man's Pop. I re-ordered this deluxe 4 CD/ 1 LP box set back when I first heard this was about to be available and I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival in my mailbox. Actually, I received an email two days ago from Rhino informing me of a delay in shipping (maybe it's because I'm in Canada?) and as a consolation, they offered a digital download of the complete set so I can at least have a listen before it physically arrives. I'm on a long plane ride this Sunday, so I'll have an opportunity to have a focused listen while flying to Europe. The timing is perfect because I finally got around to reading  Bob Mehr's brilliant bio-book about the Replacements, Trouble Boys this past  summer, so I've had the Replacements on my mind (and on my playlist) for a while. Trouble Boys is the essential book about the Mats with so much detail, not only about their music, but also the story behind the scenes. Sometimes tragic, sometimes disturbing, quite informative, but always interesting. I found the book fascinating and very hard to put down, I highly recommend the book for anyone that has any interest in the band.

Dead Man's Pop includes a LP/disc 1 with a remix of Don't Tell A Soul mixed by the original producer, Matt Wallace (Chris Lord-Alge originally mixed it), disc 2 is of early versions and unreleased tracks from an earlier session and disc 3 & 4 a live album, the Complete Inconcerated Live. I have the 1989 EP, Inconcerated Live, so this is the complete concert from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in June 2, 1989. The real bonus is the live show which is professionally recorded and originally it was considered for official release, but if you read Bob Mehr's book you'll understand why. When Don't Tell A Soul was released I found it somewhat disappointing. Apparently, others including the band felt the same way, it's glossy sounding mix distracted from otherwise decent material though it did provide the label with a couple radio friendly near-hits. I realize labels are always trying to find the hits and air play is what exposes bands to wider audiences, but it can also turnoff longtime fans of the band, especially if you have to compromise their sound. Of what I've heard so far from the "new" versions, this is slightly closer to what I expected at the time and closer to sounding like the Replacements. The story behind the recording of Don't Tell A Soul is much more interesting than the original album mix. (read Trouble Boys for the story!).

Speaking of Trouble Boys, there is also a big section about the Pleased To Meet Me Sessions. This album was recorded after the dismissal of guitarist, Bob Stinson and recorded as a trio. The band sought out the services of legendary producer, Jim Dickinson to produce the record and it went on to become one of the band's strongest albums, at least their last great record (Let It Be, Tim, PTMM). The sessions were heated, but it produced some great moments and an opportunity for Tommy and Chris to record some solo songs. The recordings from the sessions are interesting because you can hear the growth of songs from demo, to rough mixes, so they still sound a bit raw without heavy-handed production yet. The sessions also produced a lot of non-album tracks that have eventually appeared later on All For Nothing/Nothing At All and the CD reissue version of PTMM. The gem of these sessions are the only two still unreleased songs recorded by Tommy Stinson, who plays most of the instruments on, If There's Trouble on the Way and I Tried To Make This Your Home. Quoted from Mehr's book, Though rough and unpolished, Stinson's musicality and sheer exuberance shone through. "Without question the best things we cut...were Tommy's two solo songs and they're the only things that have never come out", said Dickinson. Stinson disagrees, "As I listen back, I can't sing; they're not great songs".

I received the Pleased To Meet Me Sessions in a trade many years ago and there might be versions floating around, but I haven't come across any. The sound is good, which means it ranges from rough demo sounding to closer to release quality, since some tracks on disc 2 are from singles. It is what it is, so if you want the polished perfect sounding versions that's what you'll hear on the official release. I'll be off for a couple of weeks jetting to Europe to enjoy some touristy fun, NHL hockey action (Prague), sightseeing, record store shopping and lazying on the beach (Barcelona). Go Hawks go!!
Enjoy!

Replacements- Seattle April 9, 2015

If I was able to take a time machine back in time to any time or place, I wouldn't waste my time trying to be part of a historic event or triumphant sporting event, but instead would go back to 1987 to catch some West Coast dates featuring the Replacements and the Young Fresh Fellows. The events of this pairing and their time together is beautifully documented by the Fellows Scott McCaughey, "A Match Made In Heaven" written last month prior to Portland/Seattle shows with the reunited Replacements and YFF. I could have saved time and money building my time machine if I had just flown to Seattle and/or Portland in 2015 for a concert I never thought would happen a couple of years ago. This is THE dream gig I would love to have seen because it featured my two favourite bands, but unfortunately the show was sold out long before it was announced the Fellows would open.

I saw the Replacements last fall in St. Paul and though the show was everything I had hoped for from the band, I wondered how different the band would sound during their current tour playing mostly theatres and halls instead of outdoor festival shows. The reviews have been mixed so far indicating a much looser, more sloppier performances than the somewhat tighter sets last year. As a hardcore fan, I can appreciate the sloppiness (isn't this what attracts us to the Mats?) and it would be unlike Westerberg to be pigeonholed into another nostalgic hit-playing reunited band, so their antics are much appreciated. I can watch and listen to this band over and over without getting bored and tired of them. The expanded "deeper tracks" setlist is refreshing and if they continue to add more "new" songs as the tour proceeds, that would be a bonus.

A number of live recordings from the tour have been posted on Dime, but for the non-members a good source for Mats recording is the Replacements Live Archive for mp3 downloads. The site also has a lossless FLAC version of the Hollywood Palladium concert from April 16. Get it!

For the benefit of FLAC fans, I'm posting a lossless version of the first show of the tour in Seattle. I originally downloaded it from Dime and have permission from Tapeboy to share it here. I'm thrilled this show can be shared with fans that, like me, wish they could have been there. If you close your eyes and crank it up, it's almost like you're there...well almost...
Enjoy!

Note from taper:
A great set by The Replacements on the first night of their “Back By Unpopular Demand” tour at a theater they last played in June of 1991 (which we also taped). The Mats played the first minute and 40 seconds of the show behind a curtain, which they raised as the vocals began for “Seen Your Video.” This setlist was much heavier on deep cuts than the festival appearances they've made over the last two years and at least a couple of songs appeared to be in response to requests from the audience.

A clear, punchy recording from a few rows up in the balcony, in line with the PA. Samples provided. The download includes several photos we took at the show.

Thanks to BLG for his help in getting this one posted.

The Replacements at Midway Stadium- September 13, 2014

Back in late April, when it was announced the Replacements would play their first show in Minneapolis/St. Paul in over 23 years, I thought this was too good to be true. A while back I had written a blog post where I listed the reunions I would love to see. I think my #1 choice was to see the Replacements (...half the original band) get back together to play some shows. It's been a year since they first stepped back on the stage together in Toronto during Riotfest and sporatically since at multi-band music festivals. Not only would the show in the Twin Cities be a return to their hometown, but it would be their first true headlining non-festival full set concert.

The first time I heard the Replacements was back around 1986 (circa. Tim) when a friend gave me a mix tape of music he thought I might enjoy. I can't remember exactly was on the tape, but I think there were groups like, the Jazz Butcher and Beasts Of Bourbon, but the songs that stuck with me the most were the Replacements tracks. I know for sure, Kiss Me On The Bus, Waitress In The Sky and Lay It Down Clown were on the tape. I tracked down the album, Tim later that week and I bought Pleased To Meet Me at Record Baron as soon as it was released a year later. On my next trip to Minneapolis, I snagged copies of their first four albums (Sorry Ma, Stink, Hootenany and Let It Be) from the long gone, Northern Lights Records on Hennepin. Their final two albums, though slightly disappointing, still was better than anything else on the radio at the time. My interest in the Replacements was renewed a few years later when I read a series of articles in a magazine/fanzine I subscribed to, Tapers Quarterly about collecting the Replacements (video, live recordings and outtakes/demos). It was an excellent article that intrigued me because the band's live shows were unpredictable with setlists that were never the same, with unlikely covers and wonderful spontanious moments that would either fly high or flop badly. Since that article I have gone on to collect a large number of Replacements shows through tape trades and fellow fans that have shared their recordings. I definitely have more Mats shows than any other band in my collection of concert recordings and any one of them I could throw in the tape deck (or CD player) and experience a unique Replacements show that I would never tire of.

Yes, these are the clearest and least blurry of the dozens of photos I took.

When tickets went on presale on May 1, I was determined to one of the lucky 15,000 or so fans to get tickets. And I did! The presale and the following public ticket sales sold out almost intantly with many Twin Cities natives stunned tickets disappeared so quickly. A road trip to Minneapolis is always exciting especially with an event such as this as the highlight. My brother and his friends were also lucky enough to come through with tickets, but I travelled with my wife and daughter. Personally, this would probably have to be the most anticipated concert in my life. I've waited a long time for this moment and I feel bad I missed out the first time around in the 80's. Just as a whim on the week of the concert, I entered a "Pleased to meet and greet" contest on The Current (MPR) website after filling in my picks for their Top 30 Replacements songs poll. Imagine my surprise (or should I say shock!) when I received an email on Thursday saying I won. The prize included two tickets to the show and a special meet and greet with the band...HOLY CRAP!

I was able to sell my previously bought tickets (at list price) when I came to Minneapolis (thanks Helen! hope you enjoyed the concert!) and then it was off to Midway Stadium. We arrived just before doors opened and after collecting our VIP after-show passes and tickets we grabbed a spot on a massive tarp in front of the stage and between the sound tent. We shifted closer to middle and closer up during the first two bands (Lucero and The Hold Steady) and wound up in good position in the middle of the mass for the Replacements. It was increasingly frustrating to have more and more people shove their way towards the front and squeeze their bodies smack dab in front of my face. There was lots of shoving and pushing, jocking for position and I was stuck directly behind three of the tallest guys in the crowd, of course! This is not the ideal recording situation, first, it's an outdoor venue and sound can be affected by wind and secondly, I was surrounded on four sides by taller people so my mics were blocked and pushed into the back of the person in front of me. This resulted in muffled sound and it didn't help that the guy directly behind me sang along with almost every song directly in my ear (and mics). I swear during Skyway, I couldn't hear Westerberg at all, only the American Idol wannabe behind me. To top it off, my SD card in my recorder malfunctioned and I had to switch cards on the fly. I ended up missing 3 songs, ouch! Fortunately, I figured this show more than any other show on the tour would be recorded by other tapers and luck would have it there are at least three other recordings posted online. The band's extended setlist (compared to the festival shows) provided all the highlights I was hoping to hear. I've seen Paul Westerberg solo on two occasions and he's played a handful of Mats songs, but it was amazing to hear the Replacements live renditions of Bastards, Left Of the Dial, I Will Dare, Alex Chilton, Skyway...aw, too many great moments...and to close the show during the second encore, Unsatisfied. Westerberg and Stinson sounded and looked good and the support from Josh Freese on drums and Dave Minehan on guitar was stellar. The concert was crazy good, the sound was decent and I technically was close enough to see the band clearly (peeking between heads, bodies and foam fingers), so I feel very fortunate to have been there for this once in a lifetime moment.

Everything after the concert seemed surreal. My wife and I along with the other contest winners (I think 8 plus guests) were led past security behind the stadium fence and through the backstage area past a tent for family/friends and crew members to a building where we would meet the band. We lined up on the steps outside the building and in pairs met, shook hands (Tommy hugged/wrestled me), briefly chatted and posed for photos with Tommy and Paul. And for a gift we received an autographed poster from the show! I know bands probably have to go through this kind of fan interaction every show through promoter committments and whatever, but the guys were soft-spoken and seemed genuinely sincere to meet us. I can now say I've met three of my true music heroes (Scott McCaughey, the other) and it was a thrill and an experience I will never forget.

Pleased to meet and greet with Tommy and Paul!

Due to the sub-par quality of my recording, I've posted a recording I downloaded from Dime. Perks has given permission to post that recording here to share. The sound is really good and considering the conditions of an outdoor concert (listed above), this is an excellent document of the show. It really has that "just like being there" feel to the recording. Thanks Perks!
Enjoy!

Replacements At The Ritz, Feb. 1, 1986

For me, the musical highlight of 2013 was the comeback for one of my all time favourite bands, The Replacements. Beginning the year with the release of a limited edition 10" EP called, Songs For Slim that consisted of the first new recordings by the band (at least Paul and Tommy together) in over 20 years. This EP and subsequent SFS 7" releases by an all-star cast of musicans that donated their time and songs to help raise to date over $200,000 to go towards Slim Dunlop and his family to help with the significant expenses for his long-term care. For more information about about this fundraiser, check out songsforslim.com

The Replacements completed their comeback/reunion with a trio of shows at Riotfest in Toronto, Chicago and Denver. Even though I never made it anywhere close to these three locations, fans like me were fortunate enough to hear live audio and video audience recordings of the shows. Thank you to everyone that recorded the shows and thank you for sharing!

Speaking of live recordings, if you are a die-hard Mats fan like me you should browse the Replacements Live Archive Project for downloads of pretty much every known Replacements show that has been recorded. The mission of the site is "to track down, digitize, share and archive all Replacements and related recordings". I'm sure there are more out there and if you have any shows to contribute, contact them.

Recently, I've begun to digitize my live tapes to a HD (and burn a disc), but also to post to this blog. Most of the Replacements shows I have on tape can be found at the RLAP already, as I probably have some generation from the same masters, but I found one show that hasn't been posted yet or widely circulated. The Replacements at the Ritz (below) is from February 1986, less than a month after their infamous SNL appearance, but not to be confused with a pair of shows at the Ritz in June which ended up being the last shows for Bob Stinson. As usual, a great setlist with some covers and decent sound recorded from the crowd.
Enjoy!

Note: there might be a slight drop in volume after Trouble Boys. This is the tape flip and for some reason to me it doesn't sound as loud. Still good though!

Replacements- Riot Fest, Toronto, August 25, 2013

I know it's old news and you've probably already read the reviews, seen the videos and heard the recordings from the Replacements "reunion" show at Riot Fest a few weeks back, but I thought I would give an opportunity for those that missed out to still listen to this amazing concert. As far as I know, there are three live audience recordings circulating (yup, I downloaded all three), two that were posted on Dime in lossless and all three at the Replacements Live Archive Project on Facebook in mp3 and on the blog version.

On the weekend of August 24-25, I was on the West Coast attending a family reunion while across the country in Toronto, Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg reunited on stage together (along with Dave Minehan and Josh Freese) for a smoking set of Replacements classics. While many refuse to acknowledge this to be a real Replacements reunion without half the original band, it was a treat to hear Paul Westerberg perform a full set of Replacements songs instead of a small sampling during his solo shows. I'm such a huge fan of Westerberg and Stinson I would see them with or without each other, but to hear the Mats songs, especially the early material is a bonus. Wish I could attend Chicago next week or Denver later in the month, but I'm holding out hope they play a Minneapolis concert in the near future, I guarantee I'll be there!

Replacements- Live At The Lingerie 1984

Here's a good one! 1984 was a big year for the Replacements, the album, Let It Be was released and the band toured extensively through the states, the mid-West, East coast and the West Coast. Multiple appearances in New York City attracted much attention including the attention of major label reps hoping to sign the band. A couple of the shows at CBGB's have been well documented on this blog (here and here) and if you're a fan of live recordings from the Replacements, 1984 produced some good ones.

One of the better sounding shows of 1984 was a show at Club Lingerie in Hollywood. Not only is sound outstanding (for an earlier show), but the performance is tight, coherent and energized. Considering this is a couple of weeks before the infamous, "Shit Hits The Fans" show and just over a month before the classic drunken CBGB's show, they play it fairly straight with less drunken covers or foolishness and the setlist documents the era perfectly. Yes, this is a good one, get it!

Replacements Last Show...So Far, In Lossless!

Not much more to report on the Replacements reunion shows at Riot Fest or if there are any additional dates added or announcements about who the other band members will be besides Westerberg and Stinson. If I hear anything, I'll share the info and post links on the TDIT Facebook page.

Last post, I re-posted a link for the last Replacements show from July 4, 1991. In my original post (a few years ago), I posted the mp3 version because at the time I wasn't posting FLAC or lossless mainly because of long upload times and storage space limitations. I had some requests to post the FLAC version and I'm more than happy to share this historic concert for the die-hards that want to hear it in lossless.

This is Mats week on TDIT with more Replacements (and related) shows to come. Stay tuned!
Enjoy!

Replacements To Return To The Stage 22 Years Later

Even before the announcement this week that the Replacements would play their first show in 22 years, I was compiling a list for this blog of bands I would like to see reunite. These would be bands on my personal favourite list that I would travel almost anywhere to see this special event. I'll post this list in upcoming posts, but it's probably no secret that the band that topped my list was the Replacements.

I first got acquainted with the Mats in the mid-eighties when a friend gave me a mix tape of various bands and included on the tape was several songs from Tim. From that moment on, the Replacements have had a place in my heart and my record collection along with an extensive collection of live concerts that I cherish to this day. To me, they are what a band should be. Their "I don't give shit attitude" and their unpredictable shows that ranged from tight, loose, drunken and hilarious. When they played it straight, not too many bands rocked out like they did and when they were drunk, their setlist was tossed off and they played whatever they felt like playing. They never got the mainstream success they deserved, but in a way that was a good thing because when they did gain a wider audience through their "hit", I'll Be You and the Petty opening tour, I thought this was the chink in the armour and the beginning of the end of the band. Maybe they weren't indie enough anymore or maybe there was too much pressure for the band to succeed commercially. Whatever the case, their last two albums never lived up to the masterpieces that preceded them.

I never had an opportunity to see the Replacements, they never toured to my city and I regret not making the drive to the Twin Cities. I have travelled to the Twin Cities to see Westerberg on two occasions, but my dream and faint hope was to see Paul Westerberg with at least Tommy Stinson to play Replacements songs together. The dream is now a reality with the Replacements booked to headline 3 Riot Fest shows in Toronto, Chicago and Denver. Toronto is the most accessible, but I'm scheduled (and flight booked) to be in Vancouver on that very same weekend for a family reunion. Chicago is close in distance, but I might be in Toronto around that time for a meeting...damn the timing! If I can't see the Mats in those cities, I'm holding out hope they play a hometown show before or after Riot Fest or who knows, maybe they'll do an expanded tour? Whatever happens I won't be disappointed, the Replacements are back together (not quite, but close enough) and I thought I would never see this happen and I'm more than thrilled and excited! I'm sure the tapers will be out in full force with a recording of the festivities (fingers crossed!) and if there are, it will be posted on this blog to share.

For a reminder of their last show from 1991, I'm re-posting the link from a previous post. It's in mp3 format, but I do have the lossless version I can also post if you'd prefer. If you want access to more downloads of Replacements shows (in mp3 format), check out this fine page,  Color Me Impressed: The Replacements Live Archive Project. Their goal is to archive and share every know Replacements recording. So far it's a great collection and I'm sure there are a lot more to come. Great to download to your iPod or blasting in the car in the months leading up to the big shows. I'll try to share some shows that aren't on their site yet in lossless if I get around to transferring some tapes...stay tuned!
