Juliana Hatfield- Live At Q Division Studios, June 2021: Beautiful Creature Album

 

 

For the 7th album livestream from Juliana Hatfield, she performs the Beautiful Creature album that was released in 2000. It's hard to believe it was 21 years ago and it's even crazier to realize she's been releasing solo records for almost 30 years! Beautiful Creature was a well received album with many favourable reviews and it was simultaneously released with the Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure. This was an ambitious project recording two polar opposite sounding albums, with TSF a much more grittier and loud, while BS was a more melodic and satisfying listen. It was a treat to hear the entire album in it's entirety, it's been a while since I've listened to it all at once and hearing it today it stands as one of her best. 

 

 

I bought the CD box-set with both albums together. Both signed as well!

 

This livestream performance might be her last in a while since she is planning to go on tour this summer (August/September) with Soul Asylum and Local H. The closest she'll be playing to where I live, is Minot, ND on 9/11, but as of now the U.S./Canada border is still closed, so I'm not making plans to buy tickets yet. Maybe she'll play some shows in Canada in the new year, but again I'm not holding my breathe and besides it would probably be Toronto. Hopefully some live recordings from the tour will surface.

 

The recording as usual, sounds great and her performance is worth watching. She still has some problems remembering songs, but that happens when digging into the deep tracks. During the extra (non-album) tracks there's a lot of guitar doodling and attempts at songs, so be patient. I'm away for a couple weeks, but in August we'll do the annual anniversary celebrations and I'll try to increase the amount of posts. I believe this will be the 15th anniversary of the Teenage Dogs In Trouble music blog! Stay tuned!

Juliana Hatfield- Live At Q Division Studios, May 2021: Blood Album Release Show

 

For her sixth live stream concert, Juliana Hatfield used this as an opportunity to introduce her new soon to be released album, Blood. Her past shows have focused on one record, performing them in their entirety top to bottom, but for the Blood album she previewed several tracks from the album along with "blood" or violence themed songs. She admitted about halfway through the 23 song set it was difficult to deal with such a depressing disturbing theme, but we were treated a fine set of music. She mixed a variety of covers, ranging from the Who, Police, Misfits and her former band, the Blake Babies, with her originals, with many deep cut tracks. It always puts a smile on my face every time I hear the song, Kellyanne from the Pussycat album, I love that song! (I had to spin the vinyl of that one right after listening to this set!) Oh, and of course some songs from the new album, which all sound really good, though she took a couple attempts to perform Gorgon, which she played twice completely. Juliana mentioned during the "talk" portion, she is working on the Hey Babe album for an upcoming show, but was uncertain what album will be next month. Stay tuned.

Juliana Hatfield- Live At Q Division Studios, April 2021: In Exile Deo Album

 

 

 

For the fifth live-stream in her album series, Juliana Hatfield chose the record, In Exile Deo to perform in it's entirety, solo electric. In Exile Deo was released in 2004, the long awaited follow-up to a pair of radically different albums, Beautiful Creature (melodic, low key, beautiful) and Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure (noisy, messy and angsty) that were released simultaneously in 2000. I re-listened to In Exile Deo a couple days before the live stream and was reminded what a truly great album this is. Every track is good, no throwaways and I didn't realize how many interesting songs there are on the record. I would rank this as one of her best, definitely top 3, but how many people own or have heard this album? If you have it, listen again, if you don't, stream it (or YouTube it) or pick it up in the bargain bin at your local record store! This live set is a very nice stripped down companion piece to the album.

For this live recording, I opted not to record the show live because I've experienced so much trouble with laggy, glitchy internet, so I watched and recorded the audio the next day. The sound quality as usual is perfect and Juliana's performance was definitely her most confident of the live stream shows. Only a minimal amount of issues and technical difficulties with her loop pedal, but otherwise she seemed relaxed and comfortable playing these songs. It's a pretty straightforward set, she plays the album, chats a bit, then it's done. No extra bonus songs this time, but no worries the next live stream will be in (less than) two weeks on May 8th at 4pm Eastern for the release of her new album, Blood. The Blood record release party (official release date May 14th), will feature not the whole album, but she will play a selection of tracks from the record, as well as songs from her "vast decades-spanning repertoire that all somehow touch on the idea of blood". The show is free and open to all, but if you can, donations are always welcome. Really looking forward to this one!

Juliana Hatfield- Live At Q Division Studios, March 2021: How To Walk Away Album

 

 

 For the fourth concert in her live album series, Juliana Hatfield chose to perform the album, How To Walk Away in it's entirety. It was her eighth solo album that was released in 2008 and is an interesting choice taken from her mid-solo career when she moved away from releasing records on major record labels, but chose to release it on her own independent label, Ye Old Records. This is her second solo studio album on Ye Old and the record is lusher and more full sounding than I originally remember it. It was a solid follow-up to her fantastic, Made In China album 3 years earlier. I didn't realize it until she mentioned it during the stream, that the album was recorded at (the late) Adam Schlesinger's studio, Stratosphere Sound. Makes sense, since Jody Porter (from Fountains of Wayne) plays guitar on the album.

• Juliana begins The Fact Remains (track 1), stops during the song, but eventually finishes it. She is unhappy with the performance and redoes the song.
• She plays both acoustic and electric guitar during the show. I've noted what tracks she plays electric on (e).
• During the "encore" section, she performs two songs from her upcoming album, Blood. Some tasty, upbeat songs, Torture and Mouthful of Blood, sounds like a concept album perhaps?
• Other highlights include a cover of Led Zeppelin's, Rock and Roll (from her covers album, Juliana Hatfield), On Your Mind from an album with Frank Smith, Sittin' In A Tree and a Some Girls song, The Prettiest Girl.

 

 The live recording, as usual, sounds perfect! I had a problem recording live because halfway through my internet started to lag and freeze constantly, so I had to stop recording. Fortunately, the video is up for two weeks after the live performance, so I had to record from that. I don't know if it affects the quality of the sound or if it's still considered lossless, but to my ears, it sounds the same. Looking forward to the next album live stream!

Juliana Hatfield- Live At Q Division Studios, February 2021: Only Everything Album

 

 

In the her third online concert, Juliana Hatfield changed it up slightly by plugging in and playing solo electric for her performance of the album, Only Everything. Since the album was known for it's louder electric sound, it seemed appropriate that Juliana wanted to replicate the sound complete with searing guitar solos with the help of a loop pedal. For the most part it worked, after she coordinated the loop function and had to re-start an early song (Universal Heart-Beat), otherwise it was great to hear her rocking out for most of the set. The performance of the full album set was followed by some bonus tracks of a Police cover (in French), a teaser of Dinosaur Jr's, Raisans, Yardsailing from the Universal Heart-Beat ep single and Everybody Loves Me But You from her first solo album, Hey Babe.

The recording from this live stream as usual sounds great. There is a benefit playing in a recording studio with professional sound staff instead of a home setup like so many live stream concerts, because the sound quality is flawless. I assume Juliana will continue this concert setup at least in the near future and if she's comfortable with it, why not? The plan sounds like more album shows and during the "talk" segment after the music she solicited more album suggestions. I threw in a couple suggestions, a Blake Babies set and an all-covers (not limited to the Police of ONJ). It doesn't really matter what album she plays next, I'm happy either way and just fortunate this has become a regular event. Looking forward to the next concert, I'll keep you posted when.

Juliana Hatfield- Live At Q Division Studios, January 2021: Bed Album

 

 

Juliana Hatfield continued her series of solo acoustic concerts live streamed online with a performance last Saturday of her album, Bed. The album was originally released in 1998, after the fiasco of God's Foot, a still unreleased album Juliana recorded in 1996 and intended for release in 1997. Bed was a stripped down record that didn't incorporate digital effects and according to Juliana, "It sounds as raw as I felt. It has no pretty sheen. The mistakes and unattractive parts were left in, not erased. Just like my career. Just like life." I bought Bed on CD years ago and after re-listening to it last week, it really is one of her better albums and probably her most under-appreciated album. It is a solidly raw rocking record, so I wondering how it would translate to an all acoustic performance. It turned out just fine, Juliana's performance was far more confident than her previous "album" show (Become What You Are) and her guitar work was excellent, pounding out power chords and energetically transformed these songs to a different level, plus she only played the album once (see last show). I love the album and the acoustic version is a very fine compliment to the songs. I highly recommend you listen to both back-to back to compare. Juliana rounded out the set with some bonus tracks, including Waves (from a compilation. Volume 13:The Lucky Issue), As If Your Life Depended On It (from the Please Do Not Disturb EP) and Staying In (from Weird).

Notes:

• Juliana said she would like to perform an album a month. Next month, she plans to play the Only Everything album in it's entirety, from 1995. I am especially interested in this show because this was the album that introduced me to her music. The only time I have had the pleasure of seeing her live was when she came to town touring this album (1995). This just might be her most "successful" record and possibly her best-seller (?) and I still love this album, arguably my favourite Juliana album.
• Her next album is called, Blood followed by another all-covers record. She continued to receive suggestions of who she should cover next during the Q and A session at the end of the set, like she did last time. American Laundromat Records is taking presale orders, as well as for signed copies, test pressings, special vinyl colours and VIP bundles for the new album. Release date is May 14th.
• Listen to the first single off Blood, Mouthful Of Blood. Song sounds great! Hopefully she'll perform it next live stream?
  
• The sound quality of the stream is excellent, the vocals and guitar are balanced perfectly. I recorded this "live on the fly" with a direct output to a digital recorder. Not sure if the re-broadcast audio would be as lossless as the original livestream. Unfortunately, there are a couple issues probably due to laggy internet as there a few audio glitches in the sound. Particularly, tracks 1 and 5, but it doesn't affect the enjoyment of the music too much. I will upgrade my internet speed before next month! 
• As of this writing, the video of the performance is still posted on YouTube. Watch it while you can! You can still donate here.
  
• Juliana showed off the needlepoint guitar case her mother made for her. Very sweet and amazing detail. Nice!!

With the continuation of restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic, live online concert streams have become pretty popular through a lot of 2020. The loss of income from live performances have caused many artists to seek alternative ways to earn a living and to reach out to fans. The live stream concerts help connect the artist with fans and while some shows are pay per view, others are free or rely on donations and selling merch/recordings.

Juliana Hatfield performed her first live stream concert on Saturday, December 19th from Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA. She played a solo acoustic performance of her classic second album (or her first with the Juliana Hatfield Three band) from 1993, Become What You Are (played in it's entirety) not once, but twice! After a shaky start (according to her), she repeated the first track on the album, Supermodel and when she completed the album with two bonus tracks (Christmas Cactus, her latest 7" single and Make It Home from the My So-Called Life soundtrack), she switched guitars and played the whole record all over again. Since I wasn't going anywhere, I stuck around and enjoyed part two, the "Martin guitar version" of Become What You Are. 

 

It was a joy and pleasure to see and hear Juliana perform live, just her voice and guitar. Hearing these songs acoustically without the JH3, takes the songs to a different level especially so many years later from their original release and lays bare the quality of songwriting and song structure and that Juliana is a really good guitar player. Once she became more comfortable and during the second run, she warmed to the idea of doing this again, possibly another album in it's entirety. At the end of the two sets, Juliana answered questions from fans who were able to live comment throughout the stream. We found out she's going to release her next album in 2021 called, Blood and she is planning on recording another "covers" album and she took suggestions about which artist to cover. She said she has some ideas, but suggestions ranged from the Carpenters to Nirvana and everything in between. She seemed interested in the possibility of covering someone like, Madonna, R.E.M. or Dinosaur Jr. (she's cover Dinosaur twice before!), but then again I didn't see Olivia Newton John or the Police on the radar before those records.

 

Juliana played her Martin acoustic guitar for the second set.

 

The sound quality is excellent and if you want to hear the audio only, I recorded the show live directly from the feed (line-out) into my recorder. I've split the tracks and though I considered splitting the two sets, the total download file isn't too large. (For burning purposes, I would suggest splitting the two sets (after track 16) and if you don't want to hear the Q & A from fans online, track 29 is quite long and could be omitted)
