Fountains Of Wayne- Hoboken, NJ 2009/Adam Schlesinger Tribute

 

It's been over a year (and month) since Adam Schlesinger from Fountains Of Wayne died of complications from COVID-19. The remaining members of the band and Sharon Van Etten, filling in for Adam on bass, reunited for the Jersey 4 Jersey livestream benefit in late April 2020 as a tribute to Adam. They performed (in isolation), Hackensack.

 

A tribute concert, Adam Schlesinger: Music Celebration is set for tomorrow, Wednesday, May 5th at 8pm (Eastern) and will air online via Rolling Live Studios featuring an all-star lineup. Performers confirmed for the show include, Jody Porter, Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, Courtney Love, Mickey Dolenez (from the Monkees), Ben Kweller, Ben Lee, some Tinted Windows (James Iha, Taylor Hanson) and many many more amazing guests. This will be an incredible night celebrating the music of Adam Schlesinger. Expect to hear songs from the catalog of Fountains of Wayne, Tinted Windows, soundtrack tunes from That Thing You Do and Crazy Ex-girlfriend, maybe some Ivy and more! Wow, should be great! Tickets are an affordable $25 available from Rolling Live Studios. Net proceeds go to The Bowery Electric (shuttered venue) and MusiCares (for struggling musicians).

Last spring, there was an outpouring flood of live Fountains of Wayne shows on Dime following Adam's death and I was fortunate enough to download shared shows I didn't have already. There are so many great concerts to choose from, but some of my favourites were from the band's full band acoustic tour in 2009. This stripped down live presentation sounds quite full and the songs didn't lose any power performed acoustically, in fact it showcased the quality of their songwriting and their strong musicianship. These shows are fun to listen to with the band more relaxed and casual with more interaction with their audience. A good example of one of these shows is the concert I'm posting, a great sounding show from Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ. highlights include an interesting rendition of Stacy's Mom and the classic rock medley during Radiation Vibe, which are always tons of fun!

The Disciplines- Live In Sweden 2009

Ken Stringfellow has been a member of so many bands and projects it's hard to keep track of all his musical contributions be it as a singer, songwriter, musician, arranger and producer. According to Wikipedia, Stringfellow's discography includes more than 200 albums, as he continues to stay busy with the Posies and the various side-projects he's been a part of. His original claim to "fame" would be as co-founder of the Posies with Jon Auer. He and Auer were also members of the re-formed Big Star in the 90's and 2000's with Alex Chilton and drummer, Jody Stephens, until Chilton's death in 2010. Stringfellow probably played in front of his largest audiences as a touring/recording member of R.E.M. in the late 90's to the mid-2000's. I'm guessing his association with R.E.M. began when he was member of the Minus 5 with Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey (who was joined R.E.M.). I've previously posted a great album by the Orange Humble Band, Assorted Creams which featured Stringfellow as their lead singer. I think it's still downloadable, so if you haven't heard it, I highly recommend a listen, it's a power-pop classic.

In 2007, Stringfellow formed the Disciplines with members of the Norwegian band, Briskeby and he was the lead singer. Their music is a raw, melodic, powerful garage rock that sounds fantastic live. I fluked into purchasing their first album, Smoking Kills while record shopping in Philadelphia in 2009 and I was instantly blown away. They released a second album, Virgins of Menace (which I have not seen or heard) as they were active from 2007-2011 with the two albums and tours of Europe and North America.

I hadn't thought of the Disciplines for while until I read this message recently on the Posies website:

Young Fresh Fellows- El Sol, Madrid, Spain 2009

Here is the final live recording from the trio of shows (that I'm posting) from the Young Fresh Fellows during their tour of Spain in the fall of 2009. Much like the past two posts, this show cooks and sizzles with tasty rock 'n' roll Fellows-style. The live audio recording is crystal clear and thanks to Matthijs for recording and posting this amazing soundboard quality show. Sometimes it's hard to hear the excitement and energy of a live concert through just the sound recording, so I posting the complete video from the show (I found on YouTube) to witness a Young Fresh Fellows concert from a view on the side of the stage (here's another video from the same show, different camera angle for one song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NljGPiclmCU). The video isn't perfect, it's a little shaky and blurry at times, but it's upfront and the sound is decent. I suggest you try to sync the audio live recording with the video, dim the lights, get some friends to stand around you to yell and scream, open a cold beer and crank up the volume! Just like being there, right?...not quite...man, I really need to see the Young Fresh Fellows live again!

As a added bonus, the taper included in the download file the opening set from the Hall Monitors from Washington, DC. They have this great 60's garage rock sound that is high energy and fun that is a perfect compliment to the Fellows pop-rock-garage sound. This is well worth the listen and at this point of their career (2009) they were unsigned. They have since released a very fine record, Up To No Good in 2017 that includes some songs from the set at El Sol in 2009. Good stuff!

Young Fresh Fellows- Live in Vitoria, Spain 2009

I'm back after a short vacation and ready to get back into more music posts. Thanks to everyone that read, commented and downloaded the live recordings during the 12 Days of Trouble challenge series during the month of August. It was very encouraging to see that people are actually following this blog and thanks for spreading the word and sharing the links to this blog. I had a number of requests to post more shows from the Young Fresh Fellows tour of Spain in 2009, I appreciate your comments and sharing your concert experiences seeing YFF (and Scruffy the Cat) shows in your area.

So for an encore for day #12 of the12 Days series, I have a couple more Fellows shows to share. First up is a show at Helldorado in Vitoria, Spain with another professionally sounding board recording that features half the setlist different than the night before. The Fellows again are in top form with their usual endearing witty banter that makes their live shows so entertaining. There's not much else to say, but it's a no-brainer if your a Fellows fan to get this live recording and play it loud and share it with your friends, they'll thank you!

Day 12: Young Fresh Fellows- Live In Bilbao, Spain 2009

 Well, we finally made it! Day 12 (in 17 days) of the 12 Days of Trouble challenge that I self-inflicted on myself to write and post more music on this blog, is complete. I honestly have posted more this month than I probably have the last couple years and I learned a couple things the past few weeks. First, I have a lot of music I want to share, but half my problem is I can't decide what to post and agonize about what I should write about. I found making a long list and then a short list of music I enjoy made it easier and I tried not to think too hard about what to write. The hardest part is the starting so I've tried to just start blabbing about whatever's in my head and then edit back what made the most sense, if that makes any sense. Secondly, I remember why I started writing this blog, it's because I like talking about music and through the years have only connected with a handful of like-minded music blogs that I enjoyed reading and unfortunately many of those have dissolved, disappeared or have been taken down. I started writing about something I would like to read.Thirdly and most importantly, I would do this full time if I can figure out a way to make a living (get paid) doing this. I don't want to advertise nor do I want to pander to readers for views (like on Instagram or YouTube), but I would gladly quit my regular job to do something I love, for the same minimum pay. Until then, I've decided I will write at least two posts a week, to stay consistent and fresh, it will be hard with hockey season starting up again next month, but I will make it a priority!

For the past couple of weeks there was a loose theme through some of the posts based on a couple of books I read last month. A common connection with both the Smugglers book and the Seattle grunge book is the Young Fresh Fellows. They were a band that took the Smugglers under their wing in the early days, taking them on tour, helping make connections state-side in Seattle, releasing a LP and CD on Popllama Records and Fellows/Fastbacks guitarist Kurt Bloch produced a couple of their albums. In the The Strangest Tribe book, the Fellows figured significantly, in the pre-grunge years they laid the groundwork for Seattle bands to tour beyond the statelines to draw more attention to the emerging scene in Seattle. The impression I get about the Young Fresh Fellows is they were ambitious, mischievous, mentors, very talented musicians and songwriters, fun loving and really really good people. The fact they have made only one lineup change since they're first club performance at the Rainbow Tavern in 1983 tells you something. They don't perform as much as they used to and with other commitments they're touring days are limited, but they do play a handful of shows almost every year. There's reason the Fellows opened and closed the 12 days series, my all time favourite band!

I made a mention in the last Smugglers post about west coast bands touring and recording live albums in Spain. The Young Fresh Fellows recorded and released, Take It Like A Matador (live in Spain) in 1993 and in the past ten years or so, the Fellows have toured Spain (2009, 2010, 2016) several times in multiple cities and have maybe played more gigs there than anywhere else besides Seattle or Portland. They are very popular in Spain and some of their albums have been released also Munster Records (label in Spain) including a different version of 2009's, I Think This Is, released in Spain as, I Don't Think This Is, that featured a different cover, 4 different tracks and a vinyl version.

In 2009, the Fellows did a six city tour of Spain and fortunately somebody (Matthijs) recorded and posted at least four of the shows on Dime which I downloaded at the time. I haven't seen any of those posted or traded since then so I thought it would be an ideal time to share some of those shows. For the finale of the 12 Days of Trouble, I'm posting the first night of that tour at Kafe Antzokia in Bilbao, it's a near perfect soundboard recording and we are very lucky to get the Fellows in top form. The performance is excellent and the setlist is a sampling from all their albums. They play select songs from their latest album at the time, their first in 8 years and as I said it sounds fabulous. Originally, I was going to post three consecutive Fellows shows from Spain in 2009, but instead I wanted to include a couple different posts. So, if there's a demand and you want to hear two more shows from the tour in Spain (soundboard quality, different setlists!!), I can post them next week after Labor Day when I'm back from the long weekend. John K. Samson- City Route 85

Weakerthan's fans might be interested that frontman, John K. Samson has just released (November 3rd) a 3-song seven-inch/digital download of solo material called, City Route 85 on Epitaph and ANTI-. This is the first in a planned series of 3 or 4 seven-inches about Manitoba roads and highways which he plans to release over the course of 18 months. This is Samson's first solo project away from the Weakerthans since 1995's Little Pictures. I posted one song from that EP in a post three years ago, but I will post the complete EP soon.

Minus 5/Baseball Project/Steve Wynn IV Live At The Turf Club

It's been over a week since I returned from a short and sweet trip to Minneapolis, but the memory of the Minus 5/Baseball Project/Steve Wynn IV show (On Thursday September 10th) is still fresh in my mind. In the past decade I have made the 7 hour trip from Winnipeg many times, sometimes specifically to see a particular concert, other times I went there for something else and it was just good timing. This trip revolved around the Minus 5 show, as I bought tickets well over a month ago and planned to be in Minneapolis no matter what, to see this show! In Minneapolis, I've seen many shows at the famed First Avenue club as well as the 400 Bar, Fitzpatrick Theatre (St. Paul), the Guthrie Theatre (The original location in the Walker Art Gallery), but this was my first time at the Turf Club. What a great venue to see a band! Nice sightlines, good sound and generally a nice vibe.

The show was amazing, the band played two sets that mixed up the catalog of both Scott McCaughey and Steve Wynn which meant lots of Baseball Project, Minus 5 and Dream Syndicate. To finally hear the Dream Syndicate's best songs live was a big thrill and to see Scott perform in any of his bands (Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows, REM etc.) is always a treat. The encore (set 3) went on for almost 40 minutes with random covers and a looseness that can only be described as inspired. They opening their encore with a tribute to the Beatles, Ballad Of John And Yoko followed by Good Guys Don't Wear White (not sure who did that originally). The band huddled up to discuss what to play next and they decided on two more Baseball songs, Fernando and I Dream Of Willie Mays, followed by an impromptu version of the Replacement's, If Only You Were Lonely. Next was Jackie's Lament, then Steve started Born On A Bayou which frantically segued into Neil Young's, Time Fades Away. The final song was the Sonic's (according to Scott, the greatest band ever!), Strychnine alway a great closer for both the Minus 5 and the Fellows. A truly magical evening, one of the best shows I've been to in a long while, maybe ever! Something about being so close to the stage, in a small club and being able to talk to the band afterwards, is something special. All four members of the band made themselves available after the show for autographs, posing for pictures and chatting with fans just like regular people. It makes such a difference to see a band that connects with their fans, not only during the show, but after as well. I got the whole band to sign the tour poster pictured at the top and the back cover of the Baseball Project CD. Scott, Steve and Peter are all genuinely sincere nice guys, real music fans with no hint of arrogance or pomp. I really liked talking to Linda, (she is such a cool chick!) she was amazed we drove down just for the show and said they were talking about Winnipeg as they drove from Seattle and were entering into Minnesota. As a tribute they played a double CD of Guess Who Greatest Hits in their van and Steve said to me he would try to play Winnipeg soon...

Weakerthans Roll Into Town- Burton Cummings Theatre, April 17, 2009

The Rolling Tundra Revue tour featuring the Constantines and Winnipeg's own, Weakerthans landed in town last Friday night for the first of a two night stand at the Burton Cummings Theatre. The Weakerthans are one of few bands I try to catch whenever they come back home and you can always count on them for an entertaining show. Their 21 song set featured songs from all four albums and they treated the hometown crowd to two encores consisting of 6 songs.

One thing that slightly annoyed me and distracted my attention throughout the concert was the usual chatter and shout outs from the crowd. This usually doesn't bug me too much, but the (high pitch, really loud!) whistling (especially during the encore) during the songs became a competition between a few attention seeking idiots. I know it feels nice to be acknowledged by the performers we paid to watch, but to continually yell and shout, "happy birthday John" and other stupid comments gets tiresome and embarrassing. During the opening encore songs, One Great City and My Favourite Chords when John K performs solo, some guys across the aisle from me shouted out some clever dialogue, "where's your f*cking band!" and "f*ck you John K. Samson!", exactly at that moment (I don't think it was a coincidence), Samson stopped mid-song to re tune his guitar. He started the song up again, but a minute later he stopped again and changed guitars. Earlier in the show he joked about how he remembers his first beer, obviously in reference to some guys that were yelling at him and then a few songs later he asked the "boys" to stop shouting at him because it distracted him and it would be bad for everyone else. Samson is probably too nice a guy to make a bigger deal out of it.
