Wilco- Live On Letterman Webcast, September 21, 2011

I promise this will be the last Jeff Tweedy-related for a while, but this show was too good to pass up. This is the live webcast concert for Wilco's performance on the Letterman show as the band played a mini-concert, that I assume was broadcast live over the web, as well as the taping for the song that would appear on the show that night.  Anyways, the sound quality on this is almost perfect and could easily be officially released (let me know if this is commercially sold) with the band performing songs from their (then) forthcoming album, The Whole Love. I've included the audio tracks from the show and at the bottom of the post the video of the "Live On Letterman" broadcast.

Since I seem to be on a bit of a Jeff Tweedy kick lately with some of his other projects, Uncle Tupelo and Golden Smog, I thought today would be a fine day for some Wilco to celebrate America's birthday. Each year bands perform at Grant Park for their Taste of Chicago 4th of July festival and fortunately, WXRT simulcasts the concerts to provide fans with a very good quality recording. I have lots of great shows from this festival and I'll slowly post more of them every 4th of July, I previously posted the Replacements last show (1991) and Wilco (2001). The concert from 1996 is Wilco's first appearance on the Petrillo Band Shell stage (as a supporting act) and they returned 5 years later (as headliners) which turned out to be guitarist Jay Bennett's last show. This show features a setlist featuring 6 songs from the yet to be released second album, Being There and if you're a fan of early Wilco, this is a keeper!

I pulled this off Dime a few weeks back and it previously was posted on the great Owl & Bear site that offers downloads of many Wilco (and other related bands) shows, including a couple of mine.

The Lemonheads- "Strat's Rat" April 5, 1990

Evan Dando and the Lemonheads have been pretty much living in the past recently with the "covers" record, Varshons in 2009 and the more recent release of the Hotel Sessions, a lo-fi recording taken from a cassette recorded from a Walkman in his hotel room in Australia, circa 1993. The recording is basically Evan solo acoustic playing songs that would eventually appear on Come On Feel The Lemonheads. It's a rare glimpse into the artist working through songs without the full-band treatment, but these songs are more like demos than finished products. The sound quality is bootleg quality and so rough for an official release that it would have been more plausible to release this as a bonus disc on their next record or an extended special edition version of Come On Feel (which is probably in the works). The most recent Lemonhead's tour took them across North American and extended to the UK performing, It's A Shame About Ray in it's entirety. My prediction is he will play the Come on Feel album in it's entirety next tour.

Even before It's A Shame About Ray, the Lemonheads had a solid following, in fact a lot of early fans of the band didn't care for their more pop-rock sound of the 90's compared to a more grittier, punk rock sound. The band formed in 1986 (in Boston) with original members Evan Dando, Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz (did you know Peretz directed Our Idiot Brother, The Ex and episodes of New Girl?) and the early albums, Hate Your Friends, Creator, Lick, featured both Dando and Deily as the frontmen. When Deily and Peretz left the band, so did the punk sound, as Dando reformed the band with a more melodic pop commercial sound. The show I'm posting is pre-It's A Shame About Ray, actually it was just before their major label debut album, Lovey was released. His attempt at a new song, Half The Time is priceless! This show is drunken and loose and is noteworthy for his interesting "tuning songs", it's a fun set with a lot of covers. I got this off Dime many years ago, it's a radio broadcast so the sound is good...and please play it loud!

Broken Mascis Scene- Toronto 2006

Happy Canada Day! I was searching through my discs to find something appropriately Canadian to post for this special holiday day and surprisingly I found it difficult. I have lots of shows from Canadian performers, but I struggled to find something I felt was worthy to post today. Last year, I posted a show from Halifax's, Sloan who I regard as the quintissential indie-ish Canadian band that has been around for what seems like forever. Actually, it was just announced a couple days ago that Sloan will be embarking on a tour in celebration of their 1994 album, Twice Removed which has been a fan and critics favourite. In fact, according to a reader's poll in Chart magazine in 1996 (and in 2005), Twice Removed was voted the best Canadian album of all-time, which at the time surprised me, but after repeated listenings it definitely is my favourite Sloan record and is one of my top ten Canadian albums. Sloan will be playing Winnipeg on September 20 and they will perform Twice Removed in it's entirety, as well as a selection of their "greatest" hits. I'll grab tickets as soon as they are available, which had me thinking about how all the concerts I have or am going to attend this year are all Canadian. So far I've seen John K. Samson (Weakerthans), Ron Sexsmith and Said The Whale. On deck in the fall is the Kathleen Edwards show that was postponed in the spring, Sloan and if I go to any of the Winnipeg Folk Festival there is a large percentage of Canadian talent. I recently bought my daughter tickets to the Metric/Stars concert in November, so music is alive and well here in the great white north.

Today's post is a live collaboration between of a great American guitarist/songwriter and a Canadian band musical collective that has seen some of it's former members go on to find further success in other bands. J. Mascis is the leader of Dinosaur Jr, a band that I have followed and enjoyed since their second album, You're Living All Over Me grabbed me and sucked me in. J's distinct guitar sound and vocals sound great with any band and don't lose any of their power with Broken Social Scene as his backing band. Broken Social Scene is almost known more for it's ex-members with Emily Haines fronting Metric, Amy Millan in Stars and Feist enjoying a very successful solo career (who headlines the opening night of the Winnipeg Folk Festival). This show was a fundraiser (Amma foundation Benefit) and it took place in the Mod Club in Toronto. The sound is good and there seems to be a nice energy with the crowd and the band, which makes this listen a pretty good way to celebrate Canada's birthday. Hey, even Feist makes an appearance!

Uncle Tupelo- Blue Note, November 29, 1990

This is the concert from the same day as the KCOU radio broadcast earlier in the day and it's worth a listen because it's a nice sounding soundboard recording when Uncle Tupelo was still a trio. Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy and Mike Heidorn played a smokin' set and personally I preferred this lineup to the 5-piece band for the Anodyne period of their career. The set is loose and fun and you can tell Farrar and Tweedy still enjoyed playing together as compared to later when onstage tension and their tumultuous relationship led to the breakup of the band in 1994.

This recording is from a disc I received in a trade over 10 years ago and I have a note (on my live CD inventory list) that it's flawed. I ripped the disc to the computer and had some trouble with a couple of files, but managed to rip those songs with a different software. I converted the files to FLAC, then to test it I burned a disc for another listen. It sounds fine, no real problems, for some reason there are a couple of 2 second gaps before a couple of songs, but after that it's fine. The tracking is a little weird as some of the tracks contain two songs (as marked below), no big deal. Unfortunately, this recording is missing the last song (Cortez the Killer), but according to factorybelt.nethttp://www.factorybelt.net/shows90.htm it's missing from the original source.

Two Uncle Tupelo Radio Shows From 1990

Thanks to everyone that sent me suggestions for my trip to Chicago. Had a great time! I went to some museums (Art Institute, Field Museum), took a boat tour, did a lot of walking/shopping around the north side (Bucktown/Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Old Town), admired the amazing architecture, figured out the El-trains, ate some deep dish and took advantage of some open bar events related to my wife's work conference. I definitely will be back to Chicago, it's my kind of town! Next time I take a vacation, I'll be sure to consult with you readers sooner about ideas and suggestions.

I noticed according to Clustrmaps (that little map-thingy at the bottom of the page), which tracks the number of visitors to the site, that this blog, Teenage Dogs In Trouble has reached and surpassed 100,000 visitors. This blog was started in August of 2006, so it has taken quite a while to reach this amount, but in the past year and a half 75,000 of those visits have occurred. Thanks so much for reading and visiting and I hope you continue to find something of interest to download and share.

I'm mentioning all this because recently I started a TDIT Facebook page for this blog and thought it might be a good way to attract more readers. Though I'm not too keen about Facebook, I did this for two reasons; First, I thought it would be a good safe-guard in case this site gets closed or shut down and if you are having problems accessing it, you can visit the Facebook page for updates or how to re-connect. I've seen a lot of music blogs get shutdown in the past couple of months and I am always wondering if they have set up under another name or address. If you "like" the TDIT Facebook page, you will stay in touch. The other reason for visiting the Facebook page is because I'm posting bonus material on it such as videos or links to other music-related stuff not on the blog, as well as the links to the individual posts on the blog. I may also use FB to post my wise-ass comments (and my hatred of those "idol" shows etc...) and observations of all things music. This will be my "poor man's Twitter".

Today's post is a pair of radio broadcasts with Uncle Tupelo from 1990 and both feature the band acoustic live in-studio. The WFMU show is a straightforward live "mini-concert" with a solid performance and outstanding sound. The KCOU show is a fun set with the band performing requests from phone-in listeners. The performance is a little rougher, but fun nonetheless. This radio appearance was proceeded by a concert at the Blue Note later that night, a show that was one of the first Uncle Tupelo live recordings I ever got. I'll take another listen to it and if it still sounds alright, I may post it in the near future.

Golden Smog In Chicago 2006

I'm taking a short break as I'm heading to Chicago tomorrow for 6 days. This will be my second time there in the past two years (previous to that about 25 years) and the extra time will give me an opportunity to explore the city more extensively. Last time, I took in all the highlights from my must-see checklist that included a life long dream to see a Blackhawks game and a Cubs home opener on consecutive days, Second City, the Art Institute Of Chicago and I spent time hanging out at Navy Pier and Millennium Park. What I didn't see was any concerts or music and this time (after peering over the local listings) didn't see anything that peaked my interest. I will have more solo time (wife is attending a conference for half of the days) to do some record shopping and exploring the areas and neighborhoods I missed last time and again I'm going to Second City and the Institute. If any readers live there or have visited recently...any suggestions?...stores, venues, touristy traps, good restaurants...let me know!

Before I go, I'm posting an amazing set from Golden Smog that was a FM broadcast on the radio in Chicago. Because it was a broadcast it is edited and several songs were not included in the broadcast, but regardless this is quality find and I highly recommend this recording, big Smog fan or not. More recently, Chicago resident, Jeff Tweedy has been too busy with Wilco to perform with Golden Smog, but for this hometown show he is here. Much like the New Pornographers without Neko Case, Golden Smog doesn't seem complete without Tweedy. This is a good one!

The Replacements- Into The White 1986

I have one more Replacements show to share for now, but I'll post more soon, maybe some post-Bob shows if there's a demand. So far, I've posted shows that have been widely shared already and boast great quality sound. If you have any particular shows (or tours) you'd like to hear, make a request, I'll see what I can do. Thus far I have failed to accommodate the requests in the comment section, but I'm forever on the lookout for missing Mats shows.

Today's post is a Replacements show that I got from Dime several years ago. The guy that started circulating this boot called it Into The White because he was recording them on cheap plain white cdr's. Unfortunately, it's incomplete and I'm not sure how many more songs were in the set as there isn't too much information on the Mat's databases and colormeimpressed.com. According to the notes that accompanied the music file, the poster couldn't find confirmation of the exact date, but later heard from someone that was at the show and he claims it was April 5, 1986. More recently when this show was re-seeded and on colormeimpressed.com it's listed as April 9. I suppose, the more recent information might be more accurate, so for now I'll list it as the 9th.

Despite being incomplete there are many reasons this is a must-hear show. The good news is that the sound quality is excellent, definitely sourced from the soundboard and this show is more obscure and underrated than many. The crowd is rowdy, the band is drunk and early 1986 had some great memorable shows. This was just a bit over 2 months before Bob's last show...it's good one! I'm taking a short break from the Replacements for now (need to upload), but more to come!

The Replacements- The Shit Hits The Fans Again...and Again!

Even though I have posted the Replacements tape, The Shit Hits The Fans twice already (second time was a re-post of a dead file), I received an email with a upgraded, cleaner sounding fresh rip (thanks Delbert!). It's still in mp3 format, but the bitrate is higher and it does sound a better (CD sourced instead of cassette?). So if you don't have this show/cassette this nicely complements the last post from the drunken cover show in NYC and if you have my previous download, this is a nice upgrade. This show in fact took place a month earlier than the December CBGB's show and if you want to hear butchered versions of Sabbath, Zeppelin and BTO songs it's here. Actually it's pretty cool they hardly repeat songs from the CBGB's gig, digging deep into their bad 70's cover catalog.

The Replacements- Live & Drunk (More CBGB's 1984)

If you enjoy the Replacements when they shamble through drunken classic rock covers, then you'll enjoy this show from 1984 which has been around as, "Live & Drunk". This was from a period that yielded many interesting shows that allowed the band to exhibit their inner (and outer) "I don't a shit" attitude. This was also a period when the band was attracting label interest and media attention (including a feature article in the Village Voice in early December) and judging from their frequent appearances in NYC (this was their 4th time they played CBGB's in 1984) they were being showcased in front of prominent people in the "music biz". Some nights it was if they tried their hardest to screw things up with their "circus/spectacle thing", as Chris Mars calls it or maybe they were scared of success and wanted to show they would do things on their terms. No matter the reason, they band signed a major label deal with Sire before they left New York in December 1984.

I know a lot of music purists wouldn't agree, but I never get tired of listening to this CBGB's show for many reasons. The songs almost seamlessly flow from cover to cover, clearly having fun attempting songs they have covered other times during this tour and songs I've never heard them cover before. Many of these songs are familiar from the Shit Hits The Fans tape that was recorded a month previous, but here they actually complete a majority of the songs. Their guitars are out of tune, bum notes are played and words are improvised, but the spirit of what rock is all about; entertaining, playing for the moment and having a good time is all evident. It is impressive they can play this efficiently considering, but their talent still shines through in kind of a weird way. Paul will attempt any song, Bob can solo to anything, Tommy was probably grinning throughout the whole show and Chris does an unbelievable job keeping the beat and he drives the songs forward as if he's reading Paul's mind. The best sequence of songs is from the cover versions of, I Will Follow to September Gurls (tracks 20-25) where they play the music of covers with the lyrics of another song (the songs titles in the brackets). Not only is this brilliant, but the songs actually flow together quite nicely. I think I've only heard one other time they've done that to a song, but this sequence is one of best I've ever heard, from any band. Throughout the set the fans are screaming "play the Replacements" and "no more pussy set", they are clearly not impressed with the all fucking around and at one point Paul says, "It's too late, it's like throwing a line to a drowning man that can't grab on"...nuff said!

I received this tape in a trade back in the early 90's from a guy in Minneapolis who had a good collection of Mats shows. I built much of my early Mats collection from him and I thank him profusely for aiding my Replacements addiction. I was originally turned on to collecting the Replacements from reading an article in a magazine I subscribed to around this time called Tapers Quarterly. There was a three part series on collecting the Replacements, the first part was about live concert recordings (very inspiring!), the second about live video and the third about Outtakes and Rarities. You can read parts II and III at the Skyway site. I'll check through my issues for the first part of the series and forward some of that info later.

What you're hearing is from my 20 year cassette that I transferred to CD maybe 10 years ago. I recently ripped the songs and split the tracks to post here. This is not sourced from the vinyl boot, "Live & Drunk" (picture above) and if you have a (much) better sounding version, please let me know.

THE REPLACEMENTS- 1984-12-09 CBGB's, NYC, FLAC. rar

The Replacements- CBGB's 1984

Perhaps inspired by finally watching the documentary about the Replacements, Color Me Obsessed, I've been listening to Replacements boots (live recordings) all week. What makes the film so unique especially a documentary, is that it is made up of interviews with critics, musicians, celebrities and fans talking about their memories and reminiscence of either seeing the band and /or listening to their music. This is presented without any actual music from the Replacements or any film, TV or concert video footage or interviews with any of the band members. There are some photos and scans of ticket stubs and show posters, but the bulk of the movie is people talking about the band. If you have never heard their music or know anything about the band, this film should peak your interest and inspire to seek out their music and find out more about their near-legendary status. It's clear much of their reputation stems from their infamous live performances where anything can happen and a setlist was non-existent. I have a huge collection of Replacement's shows and every show is different and to me if I didn't hear all these shows I don't think I would begin to understand the band. As stated in the film by many critics and fans was that they could play a brilliant tight set of music one night, then flop the next. The drunken shows are often my favourites where they veer off course to attempt covers, some of which they barely knew and proceed to fuck around and probably piss many people off. A great example of this is my next two posts.

Today is made up of two shows from CBGB's in June and October of 1984 where they stay on course and competently perform a good mixture of covers and originals. Tracks 1-15, I had on a undated cassette I received in a trade in the early 90's, so this is a nice upgrade from that and it solves my mystery of the missing date. The sound quality for both shows is soundboard and it's one of the best sounding recordings from the Bob-era. An excellent listen!

Ron Sexsmith- Westminster Church, May 9, 2012

 It was over three weeks ago when I sat in a church pew to watch a concert. Westminster Church was the venue for Ron Sexsmith's latest stop in Winnipeg. I sometimes wonder if it was his idea to perform in a church or his agent, thought it was a clever idea. I couldn't complain about the acoustics or ambiance for show because the sound was wonderful and the setting was beautiful, but I wonder if this is Ron Sexsmith's subtle way of setting us up for a religious experience. I didn't really realize until I actually listened to the lyrics of some songs and besides the fact he exudes a dreary, depressed person, he likes to sing about god quite a bit...oh dear. Don't get me wrong, he's a talented songwriter and one the most respected musicians in our country and I like his music a lot, so I'm not suggesting anything, just thinking out loud. Church's do that to me sometimes.

The last time I saw a Ron Sexsmith concert was back in 1999 at the West End Cultural Centre when he performed solo. I was pleasantly surprised that this time he performed with the band, which definitely livened things up. His band was tight, the sound was good and overall the show was a nice experience. When tickets went on sale back before Christmas, I snapped up a pair right way since he was playing in such an intimate venue (I realized later the church actually has a fair capacity) I figured it would sell out fast. Too bad when you buy general admission (rush seating) tickets early, it doesn't guarantee you a better seat. I hate arriving over an hour before the show starts so I can stand in line outside before the doors open a half hour before the scheduled show time. I sat in the balcony on those uncomfortable pews, (it's a wonder I still fell asleep during the service when I was forced to attend church when I was a teenager), but even then the view was fine.

I recorded the concert from my seat and the sound quality is pretty good with some room ambiance, but it's bright and clear. I posted the show on Dime earlier in the week and I was hoping someone would help out with the setlist. I'm not a huge fan, so I don't have all his albums so there are holes in my list. I listed the songs I knew for sure, but if you can help out it would be greatly appreciated!

My Aim Is True Revisited...Again!

By request, I'm digging back 5 years to a post from this blog about a concert commemorating the 30th anniversary of Elvis Costello's debut album, My Aim Is True. You can read the story behind this concert that features Elvis performing with the band, Clover who were the backing musicians on the album (pre-Attractions), by clicking the link to the post of the 30th anniversary of My Aim Is True. I guess technically this year is now the 35th anniversary of this classic record.

In the original post, I upped only a sample of 9 of the songs from the concert in mp3 and a link to lossless Dimeadozen. Not sure if the mp3's work, but I've been informed the Dime link is no longer valid. Sorry, I didn't correct this earlier. Below is a lossless FLAC link of the complete concert for your listening enjoyment and for those that didn't get this first time.

For the 30th anniversary of My Aim is True, and for a benefit for the child of Austin De Lone, Elvis and Clover re-created the My Aim is True album they recorded together in 1977. Clover members present were John McFee on guitar and pedal steel, Sean Hopper on keyboards and John Ciambotti on bass. Clover's drummer was unavailable and was replaced by Pete Thomas. Clover's vocalists, Alex Call and Huey Lewis, didn't participate in the 1977 recording or this concert.

Following the top-to-bottom playing of the My Aim is True, with original arrangements, Elvis and the rest of the musicians in various combinations played a second set of songs all written before 1977, Elvis's declared rule for the evening.

Bands vs Filmmakers 2

I know I don't do it enough, but I really should try to promote local shows or events that might appeal to this blogs readers. The problem is most of the audience of this blog is probably outside the 204 area code and the interest might be regional. So, to the few readers from my hometown, I encourage you to attend this special concert show event. It's the second annual (not sure if this will be an on-going event in the future), Bands vs Filmmakers II concert in support of Cinematheque, one of the few movie theatre's in town that screen local and international indie films. This fundraising event first took place last year in early June and featured bands and filmmakers melding their talent together for an interesting audio and visual display. The concept is very simple, "five of Winnipeg’s finest independent filmmakers present their film and video work live to accompany electrifying performances by five of Winnipeg’s hottest independent bands. Each artist will work individually with a particular band to create an incredible visual and musical experience. Filmmakers will project their work from the back of the hall which will be simultaneously screened behind each band’s performance."

This year's show features music by Cannon Bros., Nova, Magnificent 7s, This Hisses and SitDown Tracy. Each group will work with a different independent filmmaker including Danishka Esterhazy, Curtis Wiebe, Stephane Oystryk, Rhayne Vermette and Scott Fitzpatrick. Should be an interesting evening, I attended last year and was treated to some good music (Nathan, Shallow End, Jaxon 3 and John Samson) and some funky cool visuals both between and during the bands. I recorded all the music last year and hopefully if I attend again this year I'll have some more music to post.

I'm posting a couple of short sets from last year's concert that I thought might have the most national appeal. Juno award winning band, Nathan featuring Keri Latimer who recently released her first solo record and John K. Samson of Weakerthans fame who also released his first solo work earlier this year. Weakerthans- Live in Ottawa 2001

The movie Wedding Crashers was on TV tonight and if you stick around to the end you'll be pleased to hear the Weakerthan's, Aside play over the end credits. Quite a coo for this band that still calls Winnipeg it's home (as well as Toronto, half the members live there) to get such major mainstream exposure in a popular Hollywood film. This isn't surprising considering the Weakerthans enjoy almost as much success south of the border, but they will never be mistaken for a band that gets heavy rotation on mainstream radio. College and university radio stations in the U.S. and Canada gain much cred for playing the Weakerthans and yes, CBC radio has always been a huge supporter of the band. Definitely more than a cult band!

By coincidence, I have an earlier Weakerthans show I'm eager to share. I recorded this off CBC radio 2 about 10 years ago and I believe I have only traded the show once and never posted it on Dime. If my memory serves me correctly I thought I had some issues with the sound as I had problems with static trying to get better radio reception. Listening to it recently, the static is minor and doesn't detract from the recording, in fact the sound quality is quite excellent with a set list heavy on their first two albums along with one song from the yet to be recorded, Reconstruction Site. According to the radio host the show takes place at The Babylon in Ottawa in 2001. I'm not sure about the exact date, on 11-30-01 the Weakerthans headlined a show with the Constantines, while the 8-2-01 date is what the person I traded the show with listed as the date on their trade list (anyone know?). I haven't heard or seen this show shared anywhere else, so if you're a Weakerthans fan this is a good one to get.

Juliana Hatfield- Live At Fort Apache 1995

As I hinted at earlier, here's a Juliana Hatfield show taken from a radio broadcast in 1995. This was a very fruitful time for Juliana who reached alterna-rock stardom with her first two albums and her (then) latest album, Only Everything which would go on to be one of her all-time top selling albums (? or Hey Babe).. Personally, this was my favourite Juliana Hatfield record as she "turned up the volume and the distortion and had a lot of fun", but this album set the bar high for her next project which turned out to be the God's Foot record that never got released. Her songs appeared on soundtracks in popular movies/tv shows, she appeared on magazine covers, countless interviews and she was embraced as a role model for teen girls due to the positive way she addressed serious issues. Though she reached a high point of her popularity, she was never comfortable with the attention and the pressure for her to continue to succeed must have been overwhelming. Her tour for Only Everything was halted and cancelled two weeks in, citing nervous exhaustion and according to her memoir she was in fact suffering from depression. The tour resumed and Only Everything was a hit, but I don't think she ever reached the mainstream attention she did during this period. Which in some ways is a good thing. More recently her career has been a little more low key and off the radar with the hipsters nowadays, but she has released some of her best music since the early days and has done it on her own terms and on her own label. Her true fans have followed her career during her ups and downs and have helped support her through fan contributions with projects like Pledgemusic and have been rewarded with interesting and creative material.

I had an earlier request for the "You Don't Own Me" boot from 1993 (Backstage Tavern, Ballard, WA), but it turned up on Dime so it can be downloaded here. It is a definite upgrade from the cassette copy I had and the sound quality is pretty good considering it sounds like an audience recording. Today's post is from a 1995 show at Fort Apache and was broadcast on WFNX Boston which means the sound is excellent. Not sure if they broadcast the entire concert, but it doesn't matter, get it!

The Faces- Too Drunk For The BBC

In tribute to their recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, I have a great sounding show from The Faces, a band that was overdue to enter the Hall. On March 23, the band announced Rod Stewart would reunite with the rest of the band (the living remaining members have previously reunited several times with a different singer) for the first time in 19 years at the ceremony on April 14, 2012. Due to a bout of influenza on the eve of the induction, Stewart cancelled and Mick Hucknell (who replaced Stewart for the other shows and is now the official vocalist) sang with the band. It would have been a memorable event to see the original line-up (except for Ronnie Lane who passed away in 1997) and say what you will about Rod Stewart, but to me The Faces aren't The Faces without Rod Stewart, not the guy from Simply Red. I always thought of the vocalist/guitarist duo of Stewart and Wood in similar terms with Jagger/Richards, Daltry/Townsend, Plant/Page, you get the picture, basically these bands can't and shouldn't carry on without one of the pair. It was Stewart's raspy voice and Wood's fuzz guitar that drew me to the band and I own all their records (on vinyl, of course) and the first four Rod Stewart solo albums because they are Stewart with the other members of The Faces, named aptly for contractual obligations. The Faces were a great influential band (Replacements, Black Crowes), not only musically, but also their "having a good time" attitude and onstage drunken antics, which always makes it more entertaining.

Speaking of drunken, here's a show that demonstrates the band in "good time" mode that was broadcast on the radio. Actually, the show was not originally broadcast, due to The Faces sounding too drunk. It was finally aired by mistake in January 2003 on BBC6 Digital. A classic concert with the original line-up!

Pixies- Live At WERS 1987

Here's another stellar radio in-studio performance broadcast from the WERS studios at Emerson College in Boston. Not much to say about this one except it's a killer set from the Pixies recorded months before the release of their first EP, Come On Pilgrim. Though C.O.P. is only 20 minutes long, I think it's their finest 20 minutes on record, all the songs are great. The set consists of most of the songs from Pilgrim, as well as some songs that would later appear on their next release, the full-length debut, Surfer Rosa. Much like the Volcano Suns appearance at WERS, the band sounds fresher and more energized here than on record. I must listen for any Pixies fan!

Juliana Hatfield & Evan Dando Live On The World Cafe 1993

Juliana Hatfield have a lot of history between them, from their days in Boston in the mid 80's while she was a member of the Blake Babies, to more recently when they toured together as a acoustic duo. On record, she was a member of the Lemonheads for the "classic", It's A Shame About Ray and Evan has a made appearances on Blake Babies records including the 2001's reunion album, God Bless The Blake Babies. In 1999, Juliana recorded a duet with Dando for a Gram Parson's Tribute, Return Of The Grievous Angel, they sang $1000 Wedding. Personally, they are at the very least good friends and there's probably more to it than that, but I don't care too much about that stuff since this is a music blog. Regardless, they have known each other for some 20 years and it would have been sweet to see them on their tour last year. I heard the reviews were kind of mixed, but it would have been an opportunity to hear them trade off songs from their extensive catalogs of music.

Today's post is a short radio performance and interview from 1993 when they did some radio promos for the It's A Shame About Ray record and Juliana's, Hey Babe and her second album, Become What You Are. I have a two other similar recordings from before and after this date also from 1993, but I have those still only on cassette (I may transfer them eventually). A nice little set, a teaser for possibly more Juliana, as I've had some requests. I'll see what I can do. Stay tuned.

The Baseball Project- Live At WFMU April 10, 2012

A few days before the concert at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art, the Baseball Project dropped in at WFMU on the Three Chord Monte program for a live in-studio performance and interview. A trio version of the band (Steve, Scott and Linda) played a nice "warm-up" acoustic set before their appearance at Maxwell's later that day. I'm always up for any live Baseball Project shows, any chance anyone recorded the Maxwell's show?

The Baseball Project- Live At The Metropolitan Museum Of Art

An unlikely venue, but the Baseball Project has played a lot of non-music events such as...baseball games, obviously. The Baseball Project performed at the Met in celebration of the exhibition Breaking the Color Barrier in Major League Baseball and the Museum's renowned permanent baseball card collection. This special set was captured on video and the complete show was posted on YouTube and for your convenience and mine (I didn't feel like bookmarking it), here on TDIT.

As you might have guessed I'm a big fan of all the members of the Baseball Project, together in this project and their other bands (Minus 5/YFF, R.E.M., Dream Syndicate, Zuzu's Petals). Joining Scott, Steve, Linda and Peter is R.E.M. bassist, Mike Mills who contributes organ, piano and bass. In the past, Mills has subbed for Buck when he's been absent. I saw the band in St. Paul a number of years ago and I still fondly reminisce about that show, definitely a highlight in my concert-going career and meeting the band after the show is one of my biggest thrills ever.

New Pornographers-Live In Session On KCRW 2010

I haven't posted any New Pornographers in a while, so here's a sweet in-studio live performance on Morning Becomes Eclectic at KCRW in Santa Monica from a couple of years ago. They play some songs from their then current (and still most recent) record, Together. It's always a bonus when Neko Case can perform with the band, she adds so much more, and she did for all of this tour. The interview is an embarrassment with host, Jason Bentley obsessively lusting over Neko most of the time, but otherwise the set of music is great and well worth a listen for fans.

Happy Record Store Day- Paul Westerberg @ Amoeba Records 2002

Hey, today is Record Store Day! Actually the 5th annual, it celebrates "the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally". According to the Record Store Day website, "This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April".

Not everyone downloads music exclusively, for me there is nothing like the physical record store where you can browse and meet other like-minded people to discover unexpected gems and hard to find overlooked music. I regularly visit the record stores in my area, though they continue to become more scarce and whenever I'm out of town, I always check out the local shops. Here in Winnipeg, I have fond memories of stores from the past such as: Kellys, Opus 69, Record Baron, Peppers Records, Music City, Sam the Record Man, Records On Wheels, Pyramid, Musicplex and many more I've probably forgotten. Presently, our city has stores such as: Into the Music, Music Traders, Planet Of Sound, Sound Exchange and War On Music (which just burnt down a couple of days ago).

Support the indie record store and buy some records!

Today's post will take a break from the in-studio performances of radio broadcasts to the in-store concert in a record store. A memorable show I received in a trade years ago is a in-store show from former Replacement, Paul Westerberg at the Amoeba Record Store in Hollywood. This show dates back to 2002 when Westerberg did a mini-tour in the spring of 2002 of record stores before a extended tour in concert halls and clubs during the summer of that year. He was promoting his Stereo/Mono album and I had the pleasure of seeing him in at the Guthrie Theatre Minneapolis in June 02. This show is noteworthy for a confrontation between an annoying heckling fan that drove Paul to wade into the crowd and confront the pest. Some witnesses claim Westerberg grabbed him by the throat and lightly slapped him, but that might be unconfirmed. You can hear the heckler in the recording, so you be the judge. Needless to say, there wasn't an encore...a very cool show!

Volcano Suns- WERS Metrowave, April 7, 1985

As a live music fan (and tape trader), live in-studio radio broadcast performances by a band are considered a premium for many reasons. Unlike the unpredictability of a concert in front of screaming fans, radio studio shows offer:

• a near perfect sound quality, studio quality.
• chance of better musicianship and good performances, less drunkenness (not always), less distractions etc.
• easy to record the performance, if you have a radio and a recorder, that's all you need. I recorded many great in-studio performances on my combo radio/tape deck (ghetto blaster).
• interview- perhaps some insight into the band, can be interesting and informative and sometimes funny. (though not always)

I know that nothing beats the experience of witnessing a band play live, but sometimes the sound quality coming out of the speakers and/or the chatter and screaming of the audience makes playback not as enjoyable. A good quality soundboard recording is also worth seeking, but even that can be grittier and less balanced than a radio broadcast. There are many good sources for live radio performances, such as CBC radio, shows like Q regularly feature a live guest and Concerts on Demand features a large range of genres. In the states, several well known radio programs feature(d) live performances such as Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW in Santa Monica, WFMU in Hoboken, NJ, WFMU in East Orange, NJ and WERS in Boston. Daytrotter sessions from Rock Island, IL hosts many artists each week and their sessions are available for a listen and download on their website, daytrotter.com. At one time it was free, but now you have to pay for a membership, though $2 a month is an awfully good deal.
For the next week or so, I'll post a variety of radio broadcasts by some of my favourite artists. For now, I'll keep the broadcasts the "in-studio" shows as opposed to a radio station broadcast of a live concert in a club or concert hall.

Though I am not from Boston, I have several recordings from the Metrowave program on WERS at Emerson College in Boston. Up until 1989 they used to broadcast bands every Sunday evening giving an opportunity for Boston area bands to perform on the radio. One of my favourite recordings from this station is a session with the Volcano Suns. Earlier this year, I posted their first album, The Bright Orange Years, but unfortunately I was forced to delete the link due to a complaint and threat of further action. The good news is that this VS's show is amazing and I personally like this better than the album. The performance is tight and the sound is bright and near perfect. If you're a fan or are curious about the band this is not to be missed, this might be their finest moment!

Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers- Unreleased Max's Kansas City '79

As a companion piece to the "official" Live At Max's Kansas City '79 album, here's an equally as good show from Max's. Unlike the official release which was recorded in the autumn of 1978, this one was actually recorded in 1979 (April 28) with the possible intention of releasing. It sounds pretty good and is noteworthy because it features some songs not performed on the official album. I've had many requests for more Heartbreakers, so this is a keeper to add to your Heartbreaker's live collection.

John K. Samson & The Provincial Band- Live At The West End Cultural Centre

John K returns to the bass for Propagandhi covers.

When tickets went on sale before Christmas for John K. Samson's concert, I anticipated the show would sell-out fast. Considering his band, the Weakerthans haven't played the city in over a year, fans of the band were probably anxious to hear new material from Samson, Weakerthans or not. Since last year, Samson has played some smaller solo gigs around the city, but this would be his first appearance in his hometown since releasing his first full length (not counting his first pre-Weakerthans solo tape) album, Provincial. Samson had earlier released two EP's, City Route 85 and Provincial Road 222, with 6 of the songs from those EP's re-recorded for the full length, as well as 6 new songs.

The show featured many tracks from the new disc, but still with about half the set dedicated to Weakerthans songs. If you've been to any recent Weakerthans shows (last 10 years or so) you might notice they don't perform many live covers. With a vast catalog of songs to choose from, they may feel it unnecessary to play other people's songs, so it was a bonus to hear John throw a couple of covers into the set. Technically, two of the songs were one's he wrote when he was in Propagandhi (Gifts and Anchorless) and Anchorless was re-recorded and appeared on the Weakerthans' first album. So, as I was saying it was refreshing to hear a cover, a Jawbreaker song, The Boat Dreams From The Hill, a band who Samson said he saw at the WECC "10 or 12 years ago" and was and still is a favourite band of his, definitely an influential band for Samson and the Weakerthans (note: Jawbreaker played the WECC in 1994, 18 years ago, did they play any other time here?). The show was even better than I anticipated, soft and slower songs showcased Samson's fine song craftsmanship and some upbeat, rockers with his band, The Provincial Band that kept it fun and interesting...great show!

I was pleased with the quality of the recording, a crisp, clear sounding document aided by a good sound mix (and acoustics) at the WECC. Because of the mixture of softer, slow songs with louder songs, I had to adjust the levels on the fly, something I don't like to do as it sometimes comes out sounding like the volume button is simply turned up and down, but I think it ended up sounding balanced and level. It's hot at the start of some louder songs, but overall it's a very satisfying listen. I was jammed packed in the middle of the crowd somewhat close to the stage and fortunately the crowd was polite with very little chatter intensely listening to every word, which is always good for tapers. So far, I haven't seen or heard any other recordings from this tour, so get this while you can!
