Husker Du- Candy Apple Grey Rough Mixes

About a year and a half ago, I pledged money to help back a film project on Kickstarter about the Replacements. This was a documentary, not so much on the band, but more about the band through the eyes of fellow musicians and fans through interviews and reminiscences. Since then, Color Me Obsessed has screened at numerous film festivals and indie theatres across Canada and the States to much acclaim and positive reviews. My small pledge earned me an advanced screener DVD last summer, before it was seen on the big screen and at least a year before the DVD would be available, as well as project updates from the director, Gorman Bechard. It was rewarding to be able to contribute to a project I have special interest in (about a band I love!) and as a bonus my name appears in the "special thanks" portion of the end credits...very cool! If you have an opportunity to see this film when it comes to your city or town, go! It's a music documentary like not other. Even if you've never heard the Replacements, after watching this doc you'll want to rush home and listen to (I guess buy first) Let It Be, Hootenanny or Tim and acquire some boots of their live shows.

As a follow up to Color Me Obsessed, Gorman Bechard's next project is a documentary about another 80's music legend from Minneapolis, Husker Du's, Grant Hart. Every Everything: The music, life & times of Grant Hart will tell Grant's story from his beginnings, through his days in Husker Du and up to the present. "In this feature-length documentary you'll learn his influences, his obsessions, his loves, his passions, his art, his music, and everything in between, leaving no stone unturned. For the first time ever, you'll hear everything about Grant Hart as told by Grant Hart -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. Think of it as a rock 'n' roll FOG OF WAR!"



Once again, the project is looking for funding and backers that can pledge money that would go towards documenting this story. Money is needed to fund travel, food, lodging expenses in Minneapolis for the crew to interview Grant, as well as hard drives to store footage, rights (for use of music, artwork, archival footage) and film festival submission fees. Personally, I think this will be an interesting project because Grant is an interesting subject, a quirky guy that probably has a lot to say about his days with Husker Du and his struggle to be heard during his post-Husker, solo career. I'm thinking he has felt overshadowed by Bob Mould in Husker and even more so when Mould gained much success with Sugar and his solo career. I saw Grant with Nova Mob in the mid-90's and Grant solo more recently (2005) and it was sad because there was only a handful of fans at each show. Please support this project, it needs to reach it's goal of $20,000 before May 4th. If it doesn't get funded, your pledge will be returned, so you can't lose. You can take advantage of some nice incentives, posters, bumber-stickers, advance DVD, t-shirts, film credits, art, dinner with Grant, watch the editing process, film premiere invite etc...

As a tribute to Grant and Husker Du, I'm posting the rough mixes from Candy Apple Grey, the bands major label debut. It definitely wasn't one of their best albums (Zen Arcade, New Day Rising), but it was a solid record that featured some of Grant's best moments, Don't Wanna Know If You Are Lonely and Sorry Somehow. These songs aren't too much different from the final mixes, but there are some outtakes not on the album and some instrumental versions. Studio quality sound, but it's probably sourced from a cassette, so the sound flutters and wavers in parts, otherwise it's great.

Here are highlights from this years 2012 WFMU marathon with Yo La Tengo. As usual, the band performed (in studio) and took call-in requests from donors and pledgers which always makes for great spontaneous and improvisational radio. It's amazing the number of cover songs they have performed over the years and no band can play them as well and as proficient as Yo La Tengo!

Rockpile- Best Of Soundboards

I had a request for more Rockpile shows and had a difficult time deciding what I should post next. Years ago, I downloaded a sweet compilation of soundboard recordings from different sources, mainly radio broadcasts, which are always great sources for live shows. This is a nice overview and sampling of the material they played live. Songs from Dave and Nick's solo albums, as well as covers and songs written by others (Graham Parker, Elvis Costello) all played with a fury and passion that hasn't been surpassed by Dave and Nick's later solo projects (in my opinion). Rockpile is an amazing live band and their playing is flawless, tight and furiously energetic. The only official studio Rockpile release, Seconds Of Pleasure seems to pale a little in comparison.

There are a couple repeat songs from the last Rockpile show I posted (My Father's Place '78), and the sound is excellent throughout. I have a couple more shows from 1978-1980, so stay tuned and I'll post another soon.

50 Foot Wave- More Free Music!

Everyone loves free music, of course many people already download "free music", but sometimes it's good to give back and support the performer and buy a CD or record album. It's refreshing when a band just wants their music to be heard and encourages their fans to share their music by offering it guilt free for no cost. Such is the case with 5o Foot Wave, who are offering a free download (or pay what you want) of their new EP, With Love From The Men's Room on their website. Not only that, the band is also offering the entire 5o Foot Wave catalog, which includes 4 EP's, instrumental EP and live recordings for free! The EP's are official releases, but Kristen Hersh is independent and releases her material through a Creative Commons license.

On Kristen's website she states, "All the recent SOPA – PIPA nonsense makes now an important time to walk our talk and make clear just what side we’re on. We did something like this in 2005 when we released Free Music for a pay-what you like price (waaaay before a certain other band did it) via torrent sites and Archive.org and again in 2007 when we offered Power + Light along with the entire catalog-to-date via CASH Music. Today, we’re renewing our commitment to Open by once again refreshing torrents of the entire 50 Foot Wave catalog, including our brand new Ep, “With Love from the Men’s Room.” We believe that, Free and Open doesn’t mean “no sales.” Free and Open doesn’t mean theft. Giving away music isn't an entirely new concept, but the fact these are new releases not demos, live recordings or throw-away tracks shows a brave and confident band that isn't afraid to take a chance. I wouldn't have heard of 50 Foot Wave if it wasn't for their Free Music EP from 2006 that I downloaded for free from their site. The fact Kristen Hersh has been in and around the music business for a while with the Throwing Muses and her solo career leads me to believe she was getting a tad fed up with music biz of being ruled by labels, much like Juliana Hatfield in many ways. If you haven't heard 50 Foot Wave, have a listen, it's risk free, especially if you love power trios with lots of loud guitar because they kick ass and rock harder than the Muses or Kristen's solo work.

Jale- Rarities 1993-97

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of the Brooklyn band, Palomar, not only their new album, Sense & Antisense, but also their previous two records, Palomar III: the Revenge Of Palomar and the excellent, All Things, Forests. I love this band! I really enjoy their driving pop/rock sound and you know how much I like girl vocals, but they seem to sound somewhat familiar. I don't know if you remember the Canadian band, Jale who hailed more specifically from Halifax in the early to mid 90's. In the mid-90's, an explosion of great indie bands from the "Halifax scene" such as Sloan, Superfriendz, Thrush Hermit and Plumtree caught the attention of music fans not only in Canada, but in the U.S. as well. Jale became the second Canadian band (Eric's Trip, the first) to be signed to the American label, Sub Pop. At that time, Sub Pop was a big deal...a huge deal. Despite that, Jale only left us with 2 full length albums, an EP (Closed) and a handful of singles. The band broke up in 1996, only a few months after the release of their second album, So Wound after guitarist Eve Hartling announced she was pregnant and either left the band or was fired. The remaining members formed the Vees (I featured their lone EP a few years ago), but that fizzled quickly.

So, if you want to hear more of Jale, I'm posting some "rarities" from singles, promos and compilations that I received in a trade many years ago. The person I traded with put together this collection and gave it the title, Sleeping Off The Party. If you still can't enough of Jale, check out Palomar who I still think sounds a bit like Jale, but in fact they have expanded and improved (and updated) that sound for an equally satisfying listen.

Juliana Hatfield- Live Covers

The financial backing for Juliana Hatfield's last release, There's Always Another Girl was helped in part by the cash contributions of her fans thanks to PledgeMusic, a wonderful concept that helps artist fund their own projects through donations in exchange for incentives (product and services). Juliana's album to date has received 1174 pledges and well exceeded her goal to fund the album and a portion of the proceeds was donated to Save A Sato project, a non-profit organization dedicated to easing the suffering of Puerto Rico’s many homeless and abused animals. I donated money twice and in exchange received a signed copy of the CD and original artwork painted by Juliana. I figured I would buy the CD anyways, so it was like buying a pre-sale and the chunk of change for the art would help contribute to the expensive task of recording and producing the CD. As well, she keeps you updated on the recording process and posts audio and video clips throughout the process, an insider's access to the making of. A brilliant idea, especially if you're a fan!

Her latest project was launched on PledgeMusic last weekend and by the time I heard about it the project had already hit 99% of it's target. Many of the special items for sale were already bought, but I once again pledged for a signed CD and a signed handwritten lyric sheet (and bonus drawing/doodle) of my choice. Of course, I agonized over which song to choose, but I finally chose, Live On Tomorrow, from the Only Everything album. I've always thought it was the perfect pop song and the words are so beautiful I couldn't resist. The new record will be an all-covers album and a percentage of the money raised will be donated to IMPACT Boston, which teaches self-defense and self-empowerment to people who really need it. Not sure yet of the song list, but I suspect maybe the Stones, It's Only Rock 'n' Roll might be on it since she performed it for the Daytrotter session a few years back.

I thought it might be interesting to post a sampling of some live covers Juliana performed through the years with the Blake Babies, Some Girls and solo. I grabbed these songs from a site in the mid-2000's and since the links aren't available anymore, I'll post 'em here. Be forewarned, the sound quality varies as they are from different sources and the bitrate is low quality (128 kbps). The songs are roughly in chronological order with the exception of some songs on disc 3. Let me know if you want more live Juliana Hatfield live shows, I have some of these and more.

The Crust Brothers- Marquee Mark

Here's a tasty listen to start off the week, Pavement's Stephen Malkmus teaming up with members of Silkworm as The Crust Brothers. I only discovered this recording a couple of weeks ago and you need to put aside your Pavement and Silkworm ears because the Crust Brothers are a totally different listen. The Crust Brothers lone release was Marquee Mark, a live recording from a show at the Crocodile Cafe (in Seattle) on December 5, 1997. The band played all-covers, except one Silkworm song which was technically a cover because Malkmus sang lead vocals. An interesting mix of songs especially if you're a fan of Dylan because seven of the twelve songs were from Bob Dylan and The Band's, Basement Tapes album. Originally, this project was a one-off, but additional performances in Vancouver and Seattle (twice more) in 98, 99 and 2000 proved is more than a novelty. If you're a fan of both bands you'll enjoy this classic rock diversion and despite the sloppy playing and lack of practice, it's an enjoyable listen and you can hear the band had a good time too.

Rockpile- My Fathers Place 1978

I had a request for more live Rockpile and I found this gem I downloaded years ago. I earlier posted the Live At Montreux recording from 1980 from a tour promoting the band's first album, Seconds Of Pleasure which was the only release officially under the Rockpile name. This live recording was from 1978 supporting the Tracks On Wax 4 record which was released as a Dave Edmunds solo record with the members of Rockpile playing on it (with Dave on lead vocals). Because this recording was a live FM broadcast, the sound quality is excellent and for maximum fidelity I have left it in FLAC format for your enjoyment. I know I have more Rockpile shows, so if there's interest I'll post more and I'll see if I can find a show from 1979 which features more tracks from Nick Lowe's, Labour Of Lust and Dave Edmunds, Repeat When Necessary which were recorded simultaneously by Rockpile.

The Who- Live At Fillmore East 1968

I'm gonna stay in classic rock mode for a couple more posts and continue to focus on more unreleased albums. The Who's, Live at the Fillmore East is a great live document of The Who in their early prime demonstrating their dynamic and powerful stage show. This recording must have been professionally recorded since it was suppose to be released as a live album and has been a popular bootleg of the band. For whatever reason that idea was scrapped and instead the band released Live At Leeds a couple of years later, their only official live album. The Live At Leeds album wasn't too shabby either as many consider it one of the best live albums of all time (The New York Times, Q Magazine) and Rolling Stone placed it 170 in their top 500 albums. Both recordings feature the band performing extended jams and their incredible raw energy is what made The Who are known for. Even more amazing is watching video concert footage from this era, especially Townsend.

Since this was one of their most bootlegged shows, there are various versions of this concert around with different dates and slightly different setlists that omit tracks. As far as I know, this is the complete show and the last three tracks are from French TV in 1966 (read the back cover track listings). This is great, get it while you can!

Pete Townsend- Lifehouse Demos

I've been a little under the weather the last little while, so later in the day when I write these posts my brain has been mush and I've resorted to watching videos on YouTube and episodes of New Girl I've downloaded. Feeling a bit better today, so I'll try to squeeze out another post.

Yesterday, I did manage to get outside to ice skate at the Forks (popular Winnipeg tourist spot) or more specifically on the river. It was a sunny beautiful day, a good excuse to get out and get some exercise and keep my mind off my runny nose. After a skate and a hot beverage I browsed through the Antique mall in the Johnson Terminal at the Forks looking for anything interesting. Of course, I get drawn to the records and flipped through the usual amount of popular crap (Wham!, Prism, Bee Gees etc...) most often seen at garage sales, but a few caught my eye, a number of Who records. A couple of the bad ones (It's Hard and Face Dances), as well as A Quick One, Who's Next and Pete Townsend's, Who Came First. I have all the Who records in one form or another, but I had a genuine interest to get the original vinyl versions of A Quick One and Who Came First, but the collector's pricing of $25 and $40 dampened my interest. When I got home I put on Who's Next and thought what an amazing record, which leads me to...

The Who's 1971 release, Who's Next is probably the bands most commercial and critical success and was arguably the high point in their career. The album was originally conceived as a rock opera by Pete Townsend called Lifehouse. Townsend wrote and arranged about 20 tracks for the Lifehouse project as all the instruments (played by Pete) were overdubbed for a full band effect. All the demos were recorded before the band even heard the songs and he basically had enough material for a double album with the quality of the "demos" incredible. Townsend intended the project to be a futuristic rock opera, live recorded concept album and as the music for a scripted film project. Instead, the project was abandoned, but many of the songs written for the project were re-recorded by the band and compiled on Who's Next as a collection of unrelated songs. A couple tracks also ended up on Pete's solo record, Who Came First, the next year.

In 2000, Townsend did finally release the Lifehouse Chronicles a sprawling 6 CD box set that captured not some, but all of the recording from the Lifehouse project. The set includes the demos, themes and experiments, arrangements and orchestrations, and a 2 CD radio play. This set is a lot to take in and might be too much detail for the casual fan, but the demos are an interesting listen especially if you're a Who fan (or not), as these versions of the Who classics stand up on their own. Judge for yourself.

Liz Phair- Girly-Sound Tapes

As I was writing yesterday's post about Liz Phair, I realized you really can't talk about Liz Phair's early work without mentioning her pre-Exile In Guyville recordings, the Girlysound tapes. Actually Girly-Sound was the moniker Liz Phair used when she self-produced several tapes in 1991. They were recorded in her bedroom in her parent's house and were initially given only to two people. These tapes circulated and she eventually signed with Matador Records on the strength of a tape she sent the label that contained 6 songs from the Girly tapes. Many of the songs from Girly-Sound were reworked and re-recorded for her debut and altered versions of the other songs appeared on later studio albums. You could say Liz Phair became a bit of a phenomenon, as the tapes were traded within the taper community and Liz Phair fan music circles. None of the Girly-Sound tapes have been officially released, though 5 tracks appeared on her 1995 Juvenilia EP and a bonus disc of Girly-Sound tracks were included on the physical version of 2010's Funstyle album.

The tracks posted below are mp3's (probably 1st generation) from the three cassette tapes (sorry, I don't have the actual tapes!). These are truly a prize for any Liz Phair fan and an interesting listen for anyone curious about home recording. Technology has come a long way from the 4-track cassette recordings of Liz Phair and probably hundreds of other musicians that recorded music in their bedroom (yes, I have made many recordings of myself from my single track cassette recorder and 4-track tape machine!), nowadays a bedroom recording can sound as slick and intricate as a professionally recorded album thanks to computers and software. Thank you Liz Phair for proving that DIY can be a launching pad for a successful music career.

Liz Phair- Whitechocolatespaceegg (Original Version)

Say what you want about Liz Phair, but you can't deny she was quite the force in the 90's. Her amazing debut album in 1993, Exile In Guyville is a classic and is listed in Rolling Stones top 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time (328) and this definitely was her greatest achievement. Her other albums in the 90's, Whip-Smart and Whitechocolatespaceegg are good, not essential, but are still worth owning. This is where my interest in Liz Phair began to fade, I downloaded her next couple of albums, Liz Phair and Somebody's Miracle and they tread on the side of too mainstream for my taste. Also there's something about the production team of The Matrix that I can't stand, that canned auto-tuned sound and her subject matter and lyric content (H.W.C.) at times sounded desperate. Some called it selling out or career suicide, but I think she was trying too hard to capture the spirit and attitude of her earlier work, she was no longer shocking or innovative. Her most recent studio album, Funstyle was a fiasco and barely listenable. Don't misunderstand me, I love Liz Phair, if she came to town (hasn't happened yet) I would buy tickets the second they went on sale and with the advent of YouTube I can live out my musical fantasies watching her videos and live performances. With the re-release of Exile in 2008, Liz reminded music lovers why she was relevant and she did the trendy thing and embarked on a tour performing the entire Exile In Guyville record. I would love to have seen it. When Liz Phair submitted the original version of her third album, Whitechocolatespaceegg to her record label (Atlantic) it was rejected and she was instructed to re-record and remix it. What I've posted are the rejected mixes and original version of the album including some tracks that didn't make it on the album. None of these tracks were officially released and in most cases these versions sound a lot different than the released versions. It was probably a good decision to remix, as most of the songs seemed to lack the punch and crisp sound of released product. I do enjoy the original version of What Makes You Happy and as a bonus I'm posting a short video from the making of Whitechocolatespaceegg where she's recording some vocals for Happy. It's Been A Good Couple Of Weeks For Kathleen Edwards

Yes, the power of promotion for a new record! Well, for Kathleen Edwards there was no shortage of exposure especially from the mother corp, CBC who went all out to promote Kathleen's latest record, Voyageur, with appearances on CBC radio 1, 2, 3, and CBC -TV George Strouboulopoulos Tonight. To recap, she played a special invite-only show at CBC's Studio 11 in Toronto on January 14th that aired on CBC Canada Live (and CBC 3) the following week. She appeared on CBC 2's Drive on January 20th and performed 3 songs (acoustic) in studio with guitarist Gord Tough. On January 23rd, she was on CBC 1's Q with host Jian Ghomeshi for a short interview and 2 song performance. To complete the CBC tour, Kathleen and band appeared on Stromo's show that aired on January 27th. To top off the Kathleen Edwards mini-mania she also made another appearance on Late Show With David Letterman that aired on January 18 singing, Change The Sheets, not a bad two weeks!

It was a good week for me as well because last Wednesday I bought a pair of tickets on pre-sale to Kathleen's concert here on April 14th at the Garrick and the new CD arrived in the mail on Friday...oooh and it's autographed!

Neil Young- Chrome Dreams

Even major artists have a slew of unreleased albums that for whatever reason never saw official release. Such is the case with (local legend) Neil Young who recorded a whole albums worth of songs (these versions) that wouldn't be heard for years. These tracks were thought to be the unreleased Chrome Dreams readied for release before rethinking his strategy. A document that accompanied the acetate gave the indication it would be called Chrome Dreams and outlined the same 12 tracks as listed below.

Here's more information about the record (Wikipedia):
Chrome Dreams features a large amount of still-unreleased material. The version of "Powderfinger" included is the original acoustic demo, while the "Sedan Delivery" featured is at a slower pace than the Rust Never Sleeps take and contains an additional verse. "Pocahontas" is the same version heard on Rust Never Sleeps without overdubs. "Hold Back the Tears" is a radically different take compared to the one that appears on American Stars 'n Bars, also featuring additional lyrics. "Too Far Gone" would not see release until 1989's Freedom. It is presented on Chrome Dreams with Crazy Horse's Frank "Poncho" Sampedro accompanying Young on a 1917 mandolin. "Stringman", a piano ballad, was (according to Shakey) written for Jack Nitzsche and is presented as a performance from Young's 1976 European tour with slight studio overdubs. Eighteen years later Young revived it for his Unplugged performance, never having released the song as a studio track. "Homegrown" here is a different mix than the version on American Stars 'n Bars. The rest of the songs are for the most part identical to their releases on subsequent albums.

Anyways, this would have been one of his strongest albums of the 70's. With all the genres and styles Young tried to recreate in the his career, Chrome Dreams stands out as one of his highlights...Highly recommended!

Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers- S.O.B. (Re-up)

By request, I'm re-upping another download from a few years ago, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, S.O.B. This post is still receiving some views and I've been informed (thanks!) the file doesn't download properly. I've disabled the link from the original post and posting new links at the end of this post, so please let me know if there are still any problems. If you don't have this CD already (or download yet) and if you're a Heartbreakers fan, this is rare Japanese bootleg that was limited to only 250 copies. It consists of 4 live concert recordings from 1976 and 1977 that range in sound quality, but are a nice document of the Heartbreakers in their prime.

Dave Davies- The Album That Never Was

When you think of the leader of the Kinks, Ray Davies is immediately thought of because he was after all the principal songwriter and front man for the band. Without a doubt, I consider Ray's songs an inspiration for my own songwriting and the music of the Kinks is an important part of the soundtrack of my life. More often than not, his brother Dave is in the shadows of Ray, but the Kinks wouldn't be the Kinks without Dave. He is the driving force behind the band and his catchy, guitar riffs have been the foundation to some of the most memorable rock songs of the sixties. Though a majority of the Kink's songs were penned and sung by Ray, Dave has sung lead on a lot more songs than you might think. After the success of Death Of A Clown (on the Something Else LP), there was talk of a Dave Davies solo album to be released in 1968 or 1969. Even though Dave recorded several other solo singles, the proposed project never happened due to a number of circumstances. Eventually, a collection of Dave Davies solo singles and B-sides from the sixties were compiled together and released in the UK and an expanded Japanese release as, The Album That Never Was. Essentially it was a Kinks album that featured Dave on lead vocals with most of the tracks already available on compilations and Kinks albums. Another great "lost" Kinks album!

DAVE DAVIES- The Album That Never Was. rar

Still Here!

Just noticed my last post was my 400th, yay!! Hopefully this site will be around for another 400, but in the past the week with news about Megaupload falling and many blogs taking a hit because they lost some or all their links from Megaupload (and other storage sites), scares me. I recently registered with Megaupload, since I have decided to post some FLAC files (larger files) for live recordings because I wanted more space in case my present storage became filled, but I had yet uploaded to Megaupload. I've spent the last few nights browsing around other music blogs and have read stories of closed blogs, locked out access and the challenge and struggle to find affordable, reliable storage sites to post music from. It should be noted these blogs share music, not sell and provide an invaluable service to guys like me that are always looking for new, otherwise unheard music who listen and write about it. Many of these music blogs have been around for years and the amount of work and time these guys have dedicated into their site is amazing and I feel for them. I spend a huge chunk of my online time downloading and listening to music, so it would be a huge setback for music lovers if this witch-hunt by the entertainment industry and the US government continues to threaten and unfoundedly close sites and shut down anything they feel is a threat. The SOPA/PIPA legislation would have had a huge impact on bloggers like myself, especially since I'm based outside of the U.S.

This site will continue on, business as usually (hopefully) because writing about and sharing music is the reason operating this blog is fun and a constant joy in my life. I'm not too worried about being shutdown, I will continue to post live recordings and albums and other recordings that are out of print or hard to find, but I will be careful not to post any copyrighted material from any of the major labels. If I post anything you think is an infringement (or any artists that object), please let me know and I'll immediately remove the offending material. Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Back in my tape trading days, one of my favourite acquisitions was a copy of the unreleased album Seven Days A Week from Tommy Stinson's band, Perfect. Stinson formed Perfect after his first post-Replacement's solo project, Bash and Pop disbanded. This led to Perfect recording an EP, When Squirrels Play Chicken which showed much promise and wetted the appetitite for a full-length. In 1997, the band recorded the album, tentatively titled, Seven Days A Week with Jim Dickinson producing and despite completing the record it was shelved. It had more to do with the record label being acquired by another label, you know that kind of bullshit, rather than the quality of the music, I think. Advance copies of the record were sent out, which is why copies of the album circulated (hence my copy). I thought this album was one of the best albums by an ex-Replacement and it was definitely the best thing Tommy Stinson has produced (so far).

Not knowing the biz at that time, I couldn't understand how a band couldn't get their product into the hands of their fans, but in those days it seemed a band was made or broken by their label and distributors. Nowadays, indie bands have more options to be heard, but it's still challenge to make a real living, recording, selling and performing. Eventually, Seven Days A Week was remixed, resequenced and retitled, Once, Twice, Three Times A Maybe and released by Rykodisc in 2004, years after the band broke up.

A band that has a similar story is Best Kissers In The World and their unreleased album that was to be the follow-up to their first full length, Been There. I first discovered the band when I bought a used cassette of Been There for $3.00. Not knowing anything about the band, I bought it souly on the fact that they were from Seattle and I was pleasantly impressed by their noisy guitar sound and their surprisingly catchy melodic songs. Their sound is not unlike Perfect and reminded me of an amped up Posies or Model Rockets, probably the best 3 bucks I've ever spent on a tape. For the next record, Yellow Brick Roadkill, BKITW recorded, mixed, mastered and sent out advance copies only to be dropped by their label and never see their album released. Fortunately, some advance copies are floating around on eBay and the web which give fans a listen to what could have been. Listening to these tracks makes me wonder if the band might have continued on longer if Yellow Brick Roadkill was released, much like Perfect, both bands disbanded shortly after their failed releases....talk about deflating!

Have listen, as far as I know YBR hasn't been released yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does because this album is even better than Been There...and since it was completed (promo released) the sound is flawless. A great, great sounding album!

Weezer- Songs From The Black Hole

Recently there has been a renewed interest in Weezer, more specifically their first two albums, Weezer (The Blue Album) and Pinkerton. Many bands have been performing their classic albums in their entirety live and Weezer is no exception. A recent release on their webstore showcases such a show and the reissues and expanded deluxe editions of both albums are now available. Even a (Rivers Cuomo approved) Canadian Weezer-tribute band, Sheezer is playing material only from the first two records. I'm just a casual Weezer fan, but I do regard Blue and Pinkerton as their essential recordings, the rest of their catalogue isn't as required, but they're still better than most of the newer bands today.

It came as a bit of a surprise when I was digging around researching information about "lost" albums and discovered (why didn't I know this?) that Weezer have a lost album. Songs From The Black Hole was a concept conceived by front-man Rivers Cuomo that was to be the follow-up to their debut album, The Blue Album. This concept album was a space themed rock opera/musical that Rivers wrote and demo-ed, but in the process the concept was scrapped and the album evolved into Pinkerton instead. To read about the history of the recordings and the plots of the concept there's a huge wikipedia entry dedicated to this recording that remains unreleased and unfinished. There has much interest in the Weezer community to try to coax the band into releasing the album. To feed the interest, Rivers Cuomo has posted the lyrics and music for some of the SFTBH tracks. Also Cuomo has released 3 solo albums of home recordings, Alone: The Home Recordings Of Rivers Cuomo, Alone II: The Home Recordings Of Rivers Cuomo and Alone III: The Pinkerton Years that included many tracks that were intended for SFTBH. Cuomo considered releasing the entire Songs From the Black Hole, "I knew 'Blast Off' and some of these other Songs from The Black Hole had to be on there, because for years Weezer fans have been wanting to hear these songs, and I knew if I put out the album without these songs on there, they would hunt me down and kill me." He also added, "I thought about it for a long time. I thought maybe I should release it as The Black Hole and put the demos in the right order, but like I said, it was never finished, so it wouldn't really stand up, like it wouldn't be a very good listen... It was a very tough decision".

Instead of the space-theme opera of SFTBH, Weezer recorded an album that is named after B.F. Pinkerton from the opera Madame Butterfly as the album is loosely based on around the opera. The album includes references to Japan, Japanese people and Japanese culture from the perspective of an outsider who considers Japan fragile and sensual. Many consider Pinkerton to be Weezer's best record and I would agree, it's darker in tone and sound than the first record, but the songs are more solid and still stand up well today.

The tracks I have posted were compiled by a fan who combined both track listings from the original SFTBH demos to recreate the plot Cuomo might have intended. The songs are edited to flow seamlessly into each other as there are pieced together demos, b-sides, and other tracks to create what he felt was the concept Cuomo had in mind. The result is a enjoyable cohesive album that provides a glimpse of what might have been. Thanks for the effort and this is something every Weezer fan (or casual fan...) should listen to, as this may in fact be, the greatest lost album hardly anyone has ever heard!

Velvet Underground- VU

Last weekend I began to think about "lost albums", records that may have been recorded and for whatever reason never was given a proper release. The album could have been a concept that was intended, but because of record label bottom lines and lack of commercial potential may have been shelved for later release or never at all. One record that comes to mind is Juliana Hatfield's, God's Foot which was recorded in 1996 and never released officially by her label, and instead Atlantic elected to drop her from their label. She made ill-attempts to buy back the rights, but to this day it has only seen the light of day through bootlegs and the songs circulated on the Internet.

I've always been interested in outtakes and unreleased material because it sometimes shows the artist in a different light. Sometimes the songs aren't up to the standard of the label or what they feel their fans wouldn't want to hear. It's always interesting to listen and think to yourself, "What's wrong with this?" or "why don't they release this?". A lot of the time it's obvious, but the odd time you shake your head and wonder. I've spent the past week searching online and looking through my CD's to find records that fall into some of these categories and I've uploaded some cool items. The first album I'm posting is actually a record that was eventually released even if it was 16 years after it was recorded.

The Velvet Underground's, VU was intended to be the band's 4th release, between Velvet Underground (third album) and Loaded, but because MGM records was purging their less profitable acts, the band was released from their contract. The band had previously recorded 14 songs that were possibly intended for their second album on MGM, but instead the tracks were shelved and weren't rediscovered until Verve/MGM was re-releasing their first three albums and the unreleased "lost" tracks were found. These tracks were remixed and cleaned up for release as VU along with some John Cale-era songs. The result is the missing link between Velvet Underground and Loaded which explored the band's evolution to a more pop-rock sound from their art-rock, experimental sound especially on their first two albums. Personally, overall my favourite Velvet Underground record is VU, it's loaded with some truly great songs that might have changed the perception of the band in 1969, as it might have had commercial potential, so it's too bad it took so long for these tracks to become available in their more or less original form. Some of these songs appeared on 1969 Live and many were re-recorded on Lou Reed's early solo albums, but the Velvet Underground versions are much better.

Mary Lou Lord- Real

Here's kind of sequel to a post I wrote about Mary Lou Lord last month about her self-titled CD and this one concerns her first recording, Real, a cassette tape only release. I thought I would never come across a copy of the tape (I still actually haven't), but I have the next best thing, mp3's from the tape I found online at another music blog. Thanks to the poster for transferring the tape to digital and I hope you don't mind me spreading and sharing this rare and very hard to find gem. I've always had a fascination with early recordings of artists that have gone on to "stardom" because I figure these recordings shouldn't embarrass or come back to haunt the artist because if they are the real deal they should think of these recordings as a record of their growth and progression as a recording artist. The material on the tape is fairly typical MLL, just her and her guitar, more like a demo than a polished finished product and features a few originals and some interesting covers. MLL covers probably one of the most recognizable songs from the past 20 years, Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana, which is interesting considering her connection and involvement with Kurt Cobain. Throw in some covers by Big Star, Dylan, Allman Brothers, Billy Bragg and Zeppelin and you have a sampling of some of the songs she must have performed busking in the subways and streets of Boston around this time. Reliving New Years Eve One More Time With The Young Fresh Fellows in 1987

We're already into the first week of 2012, but I have one more New Year's eve show to share. This one's for the Fellows fans, a rare vintage show from 1987/1988 with original guitarist, Chuck Carroll. This is taken from a tape I received in a trade close to 20 years ago and this was the first Young Fresh Fellows live recording I had in my collection. The good news is that the recording sounds pretty good despite the fact I transferred it from a 20 year old cassette, not sure if it's a really good audience recording or a soundboard. It was and remains one of my favourite shows, but...The bad news is that it's incomplete and unfortunately cuts off during Ain't It Alright. This recording is from one side of a cassette (45 minutes) and I'm sure the complete concert was twice as long. If anyone has any idea of the source or if the rest of the show is available anywhere, please let me know! A classic New Years eve type-show complete with the countdown and an impromptu singing of Auld Lang Syne and a (original?) song called Happy New Year. The Fellows even cover the Replacements (On The Bus) whom they toured with earlier in 1987 (the reason for the photo), but the above photo with both bands is NOT from this show.

Here's to hoping 2012 is even better than 2011, at least musically anyways. Happy New Year With The Kinks

Happy New Year and what better way to bring in 2012 is a classic Kinks concert from over 30 years ago. It's from a FM broadcast so the sound is perfect and the era is circa, One For The Road on the later part of the Low Budget tour. The setlist includes 2 songs from Dave Davies first solo album (AFL1-3603) and the title track of their next album, Give The People What They Want. This is another show that has been available as a bootleg in various carnations with edited tracks, but to my knowledge this is the complete show.
