Hoodoo Gurus- First Avenue, Minneapolis 1991

Two of my favourite concerts I attended both were headlined by the Hoodoo Gurus. The first time I saw the Gurus was October 31, 1989 at the (currently closed) Playhouse Theatre on tour for Magnum Cum Louder. Yes, it was on Halloween night, we had first row balcony seats and the venue was a grand old theatre, not unlike the Burton Cummings Theatre (formerly the Walker) in downtown Winnipeg, which is similar, but smaller. Anyways, it was the perfect venue for this night as the Hoodoo Gurus took to the stage in the pitch dark, then blasted through their first bunch of songs at breakneck speed, clad in little black masks (kind of like Robin or the Green Hornet), with eerie light illuminating from the small orange pumpkin lights draping the drum kit. It was awesome! This show is definitely in my top 10 concerts I attended in my hometown. I know I've seen a "bootleg" live recording of the show on cassette at a record show in the 90's, but haven't been able to find a copy.

The other time I saw the Hoodoo Gurus was at the University of Manitoba during their "Frosh Week" in early September 1991. The band was on tour to promote their latest album, Kinky and though I saw them only two years prior, the main reason I went to the concert was because the Young Fresh Fellows were the opening band. I was already a hardcore Fellows fan at this point, but I had never seen them live and I have to tell you, this show changed my life. The Fellows were amazing, Tad's extra long swinging cymbal, Kurt bouncing uncontrollably around the stage and all the songs sounded even better live. I can't remember what songs they played or for how long they played, but I was in awe from start to finish during their set. I remember during their set, the Smugglers (who were suppose to be the first opening band and were on tour with the Fellows)) took to the stage to play a couple of their songs with the Fellows equipment and I thought, WOW, who does that? Apparently, (according to Grant Lawrence's book, Dirty Windshields: The Best And The Worst of the Smugglers Tour Diaries) when the Hoodoo Gurus road manager saw the gig poster advertising three bands, he demanded one of the openers be dropped because the fine print of the Hoodoo Gurus contract stated only one opener. Lawrence acknowledged that the Fellows offered the kind gesture of inviting them on stage during their set, a classy act. There's a great part in the book about the huge, expansive rider (food, booze) the Gurus had in their dressing room and how a couple of the Fellows completely trashed the room to teach them a lesson for their "egotism". By the time the Hoodoo Gurus played it seemed anti-climatic after the Fellows set and kinda wish the Smugglers played their own set because the energy level of the Gurus couldn't compare to what we had seen already. There was nothing wrong with the Hoodoo Gurus, I'm sure it was great, but it got me itching to see the Young Fresh Fellows again, hopefully as the headliner. Another highlight of the evening was having an impromptu conversation with Scott McCaughey of the Fellows after their set, thus elevating this show to my personal top 10.

Since I couldn't find the recording for the first show (1989), I do have a Hoodoo Gurus show shortly after their show in Winnipeg on the same tour (1991) and so happens to be at the First Avenue in Minneapolis, a short 7 hour drive south of the Peg. Apparently, this live recording has been in circulation, (yes, and you can purchase this on Amazon, but don't!) and the sound quality is from a FM broadcast and captures the live sound of the Hoodoo Gurus well. A nice sounding show from the Kinky tour, as they play a good mix of newer material along with Guru classics. The Hoodoo Gurus are scheduled to tour the U.S. in October and November and it would be very cool to see them live again. No dates in Minneapolis and during these troubling times, who knows if the tour will go ahead as planned. Fingers crossed!

The Jayhawks- Live At The First Avenue 1994

According to the Jayhawks official Facebook page, the Jayhawks have played 70 times on the mainstage at the First Avenue and the 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis. Their first ever show at the venue was at the Entry opening for Alex Chilton on February 21, 1985. Through the years, the band has made it a regular habit to grace the stage of the First Avenue almost every year often for multi-night runs. To say they're a regular or like family at the First Avenue, would be an understatement. The Jayhawks are a very important band in the Twin Cities scene and they have continued to release new material with or without Mark Olson in the band. Gary Louris has kept the Jayhawks active continuing to constantly tour and like most bands have had to postpone tour dates to the fall and the new year (2021). It was announced today their latest album, XOXO will be released on July 10th.

When the Jayhawks played at the First Avenue in November of 1994, they were performing new material that would appear on their next and arguably their best album, Tomorrow The Green Grass which was released on February 14, 1995. This show has an excellent setlist if you're a fan of their earlier material, featuring songs from Hollywood Town Hall (or is this their best?), Blue Earth and even a song from the first album (King of Kings). There was already a buzz about the band at this point and they were on the edge of even wider exposure potential with this "new" material. This era of the band (classic Olson/Louris era) helped give the band it's lasting legacy and helped reinforce the "No Depression", alt-country-rock Americana sound that I enjoyed a lot in the 90's. This is a great concert and the live recording is near perfect, a good sounding board tape for sure!

Golden Smog- Live At The First Avenue, MPLS 2000

Back in February, the First Avenue announced the line-up for their 50th anniversary kick off weekend to be held between April 2-5. The mainroom headliners were Heart Bones (collaboration between Sabrina Ellis and Minnesota's, Har Mar Superstar), The Hold Steady, Neko Case and Golden Smog. Golden Smog was to headline the Saturday night show (April 4), but the whole event was cancelled as well as all shows at the First Avenue due to the Coronavirus outbreak. As an alternative, the venue celebrated the anniversary with an online party on April 3rd, so no Neko Case or no Golden Smog.

It would have been fascinating because Golden Smog doesn't perform much anymore, they haven't toured in years so it would have been interesting to see who was in the band still. Jeff Tweedy would have been a NO for sure, because Wilco would have been on tour in Las Vegas if the tour wasn't postponed/cancelled. The core lineup of Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Kraig Johnson and Dan Murphy would have been there along with maybe Jody Stephens or Tim O'Reagan from the Jayhawks on drums. An interesting fact I discovered when I was looking at the names on the "star wall" on the exterior of the First Avenue building, every member of the Golden Smog (past and present) has a star on the wall with the other band they are a member of, as well Golden Smog has it's own star. The Jayhawks (Louris, Perlman), Soul Asylum (Murphy and Dave Pirner), Run Westy Run (Johnson), Wilco (Tweedy) and even the drummers, Big Star (Stephens), Honeydogs (Noah Levy), Zuzu's Petals (Linda Pitman) and Replacements (Chris Mars). Seems appropriate since these musicians have contributed heavily and have been very influential to the Twin Cities music scene. Golden Smog truly has an all-star line-up from a who's who of the Twin Cities' best known bands.

Since Golden Smog is more or less based in Minneapolis it makes sense they have played many great shows on their home turf. I saw the band at the 400 Bar in 2003 and it was one of the most memorable shows I have seen in Minneapolis. Tweedy surprisingly joined the band for this show, which I heard was less frequent (and would become more so) and it was a special evening with some great moments and the interaction between the band was genuine and emotional at times. I did record the show, it was a bit distorted, but very listenable (Stay tuned, I will post in the future). I would say it was the last "great" Golden Smog with that lineup, either that or their concert from December 20, 2000 at the First Avenue. I received this show in a trade many years ago and as far as performance and sound quality goes this ranks high. It features a great setlist of songs from their two albums, as well as some cool covers. Very nice sounding, not sure if it's a soundboard, I think it's just a really good audience recording (anyone have any further info?), classic show!

Arcade Fire- Live At The First Avenue, Minneapolis 2005

 The First Avenue club in Minneapolis has played host to many great shows through the years and in 2012, City Pages (entertainment newspaper/website in the Twin Cities) listed their Best 20 concerts from the First Avenue. As expected there are many concerts from well known bands and musicians both local and international that may have been playing down to the "smaller" venue (see Prince #2) or well on their way to bigger successes. One band in particular that was definitely on it's way up to bigger things that impressed their growing allegiance of fans, critics of indie music and caught the attention of mainstream media was Arcade Fire, who made number 20 for their show in 2005.

Arcade Fire were well on their way to indie-rock success story when they rolled into this sold-out Mainroom show, but even the local skeptics became full-blown believers. The band played nearly all of their utterly brilliant debut LP, Funeral, as well as three tracks from their self-titled EP, but it was their stellar cover of David Bowie's "Five Years" -- the band had just performed it with him earlier that month at a Fashion Rocks event -- that truly made this show magical. By the time openers Wolf Parade came out to join the band for a euphoric version of "Wake Up" that closed out the show, the Canadian collective had alerted each and every one of us that a new day was indeed dawning in rock 'n' roll. --Erik Thompson

The following night, Arcade Fire performed in Winnipeg and it was the first time I saw the band live. Up to that point I didn't know a lot about the band, though I did have a copy of their debut full length album, Funeral and I enjoyed their full orchestral sound. This did not prepare me for what I saw, on September 30 at the Burton Cummings Theatre. Even though, Funeral made many critics top album lists for 2004 and the 2000's, it still does not do justice to their live show that blew me away with the stunning visuals and sonic power of their stunning live performance. This was unlike any concert I had been to with the constant movement of the performers that were packed on stage with the fury and intensity of a confident band. I was physically drained just from watching the concert I can only imagine the feeling of exhaustion on the stage. We had in my opinion perfect seats, first row, dead centre in the first balcony with an excellent view of the stage in a classic old theatre that was the ideal ambience for this concert. The setlist for this show was similar to the night before in Minneapolis, heavy on Funeral material, of course, but they switched up some covers for the Winnipeg show. Their dedication to Bowie was shown by playing a different Bowie cover (Queen Bitch) than at the First Avenue as well as a Springsteen cover (State Trooper).

The live recording from the First Avenue has amazing sound as it was recorded for broadcast on 89.3 The Current. Fair warning, if you are listening to the concert loudly (especially with headphones), beware for DJ interruptions throughout the show and though I love Mary Lucia, her voice comes on a little loudly compared to the sound level of the concert. I chose to post this show instead of the Winnipeg concert mainly because of the better sound quality. Though the Winnipeg recording is solid (maybe I'll post later?), you can't compete with soundboard radio broadcast quality. An incredible performance and a monumental live show from Arcade Fire at the First Avenue!

First Avenue Turns 50! Paul Westerberg- Minneapolis, MN: The Craft 2007

Last Friday April 3, marked the 50th anniversary of the legendary club, The First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. The club opened in April 1970 when it was known as the Depot because previously the building actually was a Greyhound bus station depot. Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen launched the venue with the first ever show at the Depot, as the club become a popular live venue for local and International musicians. The history of the club is a long and sometimes complicated story with several financial disputes, bankruptcy, closure, format/theme changes and name changes. For an informative history of the club, watch the excellent documentary, First Avenue: Closer To the Stars. In 1972, the club changed it's image and the Depot evolved to become Uncle Sam's (Uncle Sam's was a part of a national franchise of the American Events Company) with DJ dance nights and it literally became a massive disco.

It wasn't until 1981 when the club changed it's name to the First Avenue and a year prior they opened the 7th St. Entry side room that the club gained momentum to become something special. The amount of great shows and bands that have played at the First Avenue in the past thirty years is eye popping. The stars painted on the side of the building are just some of the names that have helped propel the First Avenue through the years. There's no doubt that Prince was very responsible for giving the club national recognition and it became a tourist attraction, but the rise of the Minneapolis music scene nationally in the 1980's can be traced to many incredible shows at the corner of First Avenue and 7th St. Besides Prince, there were other great bands that frequently played the club such as the Replacements, Husker Du, Soul Asylum, Suburbs, Trip Shakespeare and the Jayhawks to name only a few. I've had the pleasure of seeing several good shows at the First Avenue, I think the first was in 1997 with Dinosaur Jr and I haven't been back since 2007 when I saw Fountains of Wayne, with lots of cool shows between. Presently, as well as the The First Avenue and 7th St. Entry, the owners also operate the Turf Club and the Palace Theatre in St. Paul and also own the Fine Line in Minneapolis. First Avenue is one of the longest running independently owned and operated clubs in the United States. It appears the club has been doing well except now with COVID-19 the reality of the situation is in jeopardy with mass postponement of concerts in their calendar of events. The hope is that the club (and all clubs!), as well as the music industry will bounce back strong whenever things get back to a near normal in the near future (we can only hope).

For the next few posts as a tribute to the First Avenue, I'll be posting shows from this venue with a range of artists from the Twin Cities and beyond. I probably won't share shows I attended/taped at the clubs mainly because the sound quality isn't great, but there are many must-hear shows at the First Avenue that were recorded.

First up is a show from 2007 from Twin Cities resident, Paul Westerberg who participated in an installment of "The Craft" a Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame interview/performance series. Hosted by writer/musician, Warren Zanes, (formerly of the band, Del Fuegos) he talked to Westerberg about various topics and gave some rare insight into his personal life, music and recording and performing with the Replacements. Between interview segments, Westerberg picked up his guitar and performed ten songs from his solo career and the Replacements. A truly unique concept and concert experience and fortunately Zanes is a knowledgeable fan and interviewer to make a potentially dry event into a memorable evening with one of the most talented singer songwriters of his generation.

The Refreshments- APC Studios, Atlanta 1996

Since the last post was in Atlanta, let's stay there. I have another show also at APC Studios in Atlanta recorded roughly a month after the Westerberg show. Similarly to the Westerberg show, this concert was an in-studio live broadcast with a studio audience. The sound quality is excellent and the band performs a short, but powerful set of songs from their major label debut album, Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy. As far as debut albums go, Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy is as good as any debut record from the 90's. This album had a lot of airplay at home as I made sure my kids grew up with good music and this one was a popular choice. It was infectious, funny and there wasn't a bad song on the record, a very important album (in my opinion) from 1996. Their follow-up album, The Bottle & Fresh Horse was released in the fall of 1997 and it suffered from a lack of promotion (the band parted with Mercury Records a couple months after the album was released) and a lack of great material. The band broke up shortly after which is too bad because the record still had some really good songs on it and if they had the label support they could taken it so much further. Fortunately, for Refreshment fans, the songs have lived on with Roger Clyne's band he formed after the Refreshments, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers who are continuing on and have released 8 studio albums and 2 live records. They perform many of the Refreshments song live and there have been a few Refreshments reunion shows since.

A good place to start if you're interested in the Refreshments is a documentary released in 2017, Here's To Life!- The Story of the Refreshments which documents the rise of the band, the issues within the band and the crush of the music industry (boo major labels!!). Sounds very interesting and I will get around to watching this soon.

Note: The band actually self-released a CD in 1994 called Wheelie with most of the songs that would later appear on Fizzy Fuzzy. The songs were re-worked and re-recorded probably with higher production values and released on a major label. I still have the mp3 version posted from 2009 available for download so you want to hear the "original" versions.

Paul Westerberg- APC Studios, Live In Atlanta 1996

I've been listening to a lot of Paul Westerberg recently brought on because someone on Dime has been posting and asking for contributions for recordings from Westerberg's 2002 solo tour through the States (and Toronto). That tour was broken into two parts, the Spring featured performances at record stores, split with a three night run in his hometown of Minneapolis in late June/July, then the tour proceeded in August at concert halls and theatres. I attended and recorded one of the shows in Minneapolis at the Guthrie Theatre and I have several of the shows from both tours, so the Dime revisit/flood was a way to fill in shows I didn't have. I posted one of the record store shows back in 2012,  Happy Record Store Day- Paul Westerberg @ Amoeba Records 2002-04-25 (click HRSD for link to original blog post/ click PW @Amoeba Records...for direct link to show download).

 I will get around to posting another show from the 2002 later, but I remembered I uploaded another Westerberg show about 7 years ago that I have since forgot to post. It's a in-studio radio mini-concert at APC Studios in Atlanta, I believe he played a club show later that evening. Recently I had a listen and the sound quality and the performance is excellent. I know generally fans and critics weren't that enthusiastic for Paul's second album, Eventually, but I have to come to appreciate this record has some really good songs on it. Maybe it's because they were hidden behind the slicker production on the album, but live these songs shine much brighter. I actually think this is one of his better solo albums. It's an underrated era in his career where he had a fair bit of mainstream exposure including making several live TV appearances and maybe his last real attempt for mainstream success. Since then (well, maybe after Suicaine Gratification), he has made music more on his terms with less production values and even less commercial appeal and success. Which isn't a bad thing? Anyways, this show from 1996 features a tight band, songs from Eventually, one from 14 Songs as well as three Replacements songs. Well worth a listen!

R.I.P. Adam Schlesinger: Fountains of Wayne- The Cookie Jar

So far COVID-19 has claimed many, many lives throughout the world and it really hits home when someone you admire and respect musically is taken by this deadly virus. Adam Schlesinger from the band, Fountains of Wayne died in hospital Wednesday from complications related to COVID-19. This is particularly sad as he had been hospitalized and was on a ventilator for the past two weeks. I read a report a few days earlier saying that he was not in a induced coma (report of that days earlier), but was on a ventilator in hospital then was back at home. Apparently that was not the case and with the virus rapidly spreading, especially in New York state, this was not a surprise, but it was shocking. I had been on a revived Fountains of Wayne kick for the past month well before things grew grim and yesterday all day I listened to the first 4 Ivy albums, another band Schlesinger was a member of. Apart from Fountains Of Wayne, he has kept busy with projects in TV and film and he is widely respected for his talent that has earned him 3 Emmy Awards and a Oscar as well he has been nominated for Tony and Golden Globe awards (and more Emmy/Oscars).

Instead of a posting a Fountains of Wayne show, I have a compilation of tracks that were B-sides, bonus tracks and songs from TV shows and movies. Schlesinger before and after the band disbanded was very prolific with his work in TV and film especially in the past 10 years, so there could be another compilation or playlist to be made. The Cookie Jar is not an official release, but was a compilation I found on the great music blog, Pop Fair. It was posted in 2011 just a few months before they're final album, Sky Full Of Holes was released. Thanks Pop Fair for compiling these tracks and since the link to download is inactive, I thought I would (attempt) to share it here. This is a fine companion piece to, Out-of-State Plates (b-sides, unreleased tracks) and continues where that album left of. Some interesting tracks, some very short songs, some cool covers and a couple of gems. The Kinks cover, Better Things is wonderful and the Hollies and Moody Blues covers are very faithful to the originals. This gathered together some odds and ends and hopefully in time more seldom heard (or unreleased) Fountains of Wayne tracks become available. R.I.P. Adam Schlesinger.

Since I'm officially going to be laid off from my work starting April 1 (no joke!) because in my province, all non-critical and essential services and business will close at least for the next two weeks. I'm not too torn up about it yet, and though I'm no psychic, I'm guessing these closures will be extended longer. For how long, it's anyone's guess. The good news is it is allowing me more time to browse through my collection of shows to post new material on the blog. I also have a bit of a backlog of shows I've uploaded, but haven't posted yet. I might have lost interest or enthusiasm for the show or something more interesting or timely came up. Anyways, it should mean more posts in the upcoming weeks as I'll try to make time to write and listen to even more music. Fun times! I hope...at least until the money runs dry.

When you think of Vancouver's, Blue Shadows, country music comes to mind, right? Yes and no, and it isn't a bad thing. I'm not a huge fan of country music in general, but the Blue Shadows are in a wider genre: alt country, folk, rock. You can't help but think of the Everly Brothers with some amazing harmonies from vocalists, Billy Cowsill and Jeffrey Hatcher and a tight band with a touch of rockabilly and 50's rock. Everyone knows the story of Billy Cowsill who co-formed the Cowsills in the mid-60's and stayed active in the music scene through five decades. Cowsill considers his time in the Blue Shadows as his most positive experience as a musician to that point in his career. The driving and creative force of the Blue Shadows was Jeffrey Hatcher, a Winnipegger who relocated to Vancouver (but is back in the Peg) who brought his immense talent to the forefront with some great songs. Hatcher enjoyed modest success with his band, Jeffrey Hatcher and the Big Beat in the 80's and has more recently reunited with his brothers with The Fuse, a band that pre-dated the Big Beat. It really is a shame the Blue Shadows only released two albums due to Cowsill's addictions that broke up the band. I highly recommend you seek out those two albums, On The Floor Of Heaven and Lucky To Me. The deluxe edition of On The Floor Of Heaven features a bonus second disc of outtakes and covers the band recorded.

The live recording from the Horseshoe in 1994 captures the band in fine form that was professionally recorded and aired on CBC radio. The sound is outstanding and the performance is flawless with Hatcher and Cowsill at their harmonizing best. Thanks again to stevemtl who recorded this concert on the radio and transferred and posted the show to Dime. I have many CBC radio broadcasts from this time period on cassette masters, so thanks stevemtl for taking the time to post. There was talk and interest that (allegedly) this recording would be released as a bonus live disc packaged with the reissue of Luck To Me, but unfortunately the label folded so the project didn't happen. Such a shame!

Neil Young Tribute- Live In Winnipeg 1995

With most everyone practicing social distancing, it is an opportunity to sort your record collection and an opportunity to listen to music you have been meaning to listen to. These days, streaming is the popular form for listening and discovering music and there are endless possibilities for making playlists. Presently, a cliche playlist would be about isolation and loneliness (maybe even depression) as it has become the norm for people around the world to avoid any social gatherings or the possibility of being within a meter of an another human being. When I think of artists and songs that meet that criteria, I often turn to the "loner" himself, Neil Young. Neil isn't always anti-social and though I'm thinking he prefers to perform solo, he does have Crazy Horse as his backing band and he has played in other groups such as Crosby, Stills and Nash, Buffalo Springfield, The Squires and even made a record and toured with Pearl Jam! Though his songs have taken on an increasingly critical opinion of politics, the environment and war he has still maintained a certain reputation as a solemn loner. A perfect thing to be during these times.

Instead of a playlist, how about a tribute to Neil Young in the form of a concert. There have been many albums and concerts that have paid tribute to Neil Young (despite being very alive!) so there are many to choose from with many popular artists participating. Today's post is unique to me because this was recorded in my hometown (and Neil's) with local bands all performing the music of Neil Young. This concert was to celebrate Neil Young's 50th birthday on the eve of his birthday, and yes, they sing Happy birthday at the beginning. The strange thing is the radio announcer says the date of the concert is September 27th, but Neil's real birthday is November 12th...??

• The recording: Recorded in 1995 and was aired nationally on CBC-FM "Real Time" broadcast. Thanks to Stevemtl who recorded it off the radio and posted the show to Dime. Each band performs a short set of Young covers each, but I'm assuming there were other songs that weren't aired on the broadcast.
• The bands: All Winnipeg bands, mainly indie and I'm slightly familiar with most of these bands though I have to admit haven't seen any of them live. The Blue Meanies, who became the New Meanies shortly after due to another band with the same name, gained modest success and even had airplay. Buick Six, I remember because Mike Koop also played in the band, The Bonaduces and they had a violin player, Julie Penner that was really good that went on to perform and record with many well known Canadian musicians. Zen Bungalow had Rod Slaughter in the band who went on to form Duotang and plays in Novillero. Grand Theft Canoe had a cool psychedelic sound I like a lot and all I know about Not Going To Vegas is that Phil Deschambault in the band co-formed the duo, Ash Koley with Ash Koley.
• The sound: The sound quality is excellent, FM broadcasts always sound great. All the bands do a commendable job in their own way and style. Very enjoyable!

Though this concert and the bands may only have only regional interest, Neil Young's music is celebrated and appreciated world-wide and the fact he spent many of his formative years in Winnipeg is something to be proud of. The concert is from almost 25 years ago and at the time I believe Young was touring with Pearl Jam. Most of the bands that performed on this night are no longer together (New Meanies still perform occasionally), but Young continues to record new music and tour. If your wondering what Young is doing to keep busy during these grim times, Young has shared his Fireside Session show on his archives site. He has filmed (with the help of his wife, Daryl Hannah) two sessions consisting of some deep tracks and some classic tunes. “Because we are all at home and not venturing out, we will try to do a stream from my fireplace with my lovely wife filming. It will be a down-home production, a few songs, a little time together,”says Young. The sessions have been filmed from Young and Hannah’s home in snowy Telluride, Colorado. Indeed!

Thoughts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) have taken over our lives. It has affected the way we interact with people, how we cautiously move about and how a weird sense of taking back control of our lives has led to hoarding toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Schools, universities, professional and amateur sports, movie theatres, galleries, museums, theatre/concerts, restaurants and many businesses are shutting down to help stop the spread of this deadly virus. It's the uncertainty that is one of the biggest concerns and who knows how long it will take for our lives to return to normal, whatever that'll look like. Today at my place of employment (my real job), we made the decision to be closed, except only by appointment to pick up completed work (I work at a picture framing shop). For the rest of week, one employee will be physically there to field phone calls, inquiries and pickups and most likely by next week we temporarily close completely. Since hockey has been a no-go for almost a week now, I will have a lot more free time to dedicate what I truly love best, writing posts on this blog. Expect to see more updates than once a month.

One of the key annual events in the music industry, Record Store Day is also effected by the virus. RSD was to take place this year on April 18th, but has been postponed until June 20th. This is a popular day for a mass of new releases, many limited edition and/or reissues. To be fair and realistically the stores might not be open even a month from now so this is a good decision to maximize the full retail potential. This year, one item that caught my attention was a new release from the Young Fresh Fellows, Toxic Youth, that will be limited to 800 copies. Check the RSD and the Record Store Day Canada website for more details and for participating stores in your area.

Speaking of Record Store Day, here's a little something from RSD 19, a reworking of sorts of one of Graham Parker's best albums, Squeezing Out Sparks. This edition is an album of all new solo acoustic performances from Graham (sorry, no Rumour) that celebrates the 40th anniversary of this classic. It was a limited UK edition limited to 500 copies on blue vinyl and is long out of print. It is sequenced in the same order as the original record with the addition of a bonus track of Mercury Poisoning, which I think is arguably one of his best songs. Just imagine Graham Parker, acoustic guitar in hand performing these songs in your living room (or where ever), no band, no overdubs and no special effects. It's clear and refreshing and he serves up a mighty fine performance. Though the songs are strong and powerful, what this recording lacks is the "sparks" and the angry rebelliousness raw sound that Parker's music expressed 40 years ago. I can't help feeling after listening to this album that I have to put on the original disc from 1979 to remind myself why Allmusic cited it as, "[his] finest album", "a masterful fusion of pub rock classicism, new wave pop, and pure vitriol". Parker's career has varied greatly over the years and he often revisits some of his past triumphs. In the mid-90's he joined up with The Figgs as his supporting band after years of performing solo and his recent collaborations with his former band, The Rumour (Three Chords Good & Mystery Glue) continues to be promising. Parker still has a lot more gas in his tank and he's always worth a listen even if it's not a full tank.

"You guys are killer!", a fan seated a row in front of me and about 5 seats or so over shouted out between Handshake Drugs and War On War.
 
Jeff Tweedy: "That's the kind of individual support we're looking for, applause together means nothing, but the brave soul that reaches out in the silence and says you guys are killer. That's what keep us going, sir. When I'm in my bunk thinking about the show tonight, that's what I'm going to be thinking about. All of your applauses is dogshit, but that shouldn't inhibit you from applausing".

That guy was right, Wilco did kill it. The band was on fire, I've seen Wilco many times in our city and this was probably my favourite show. The sometimes moody Tweedy was in good spirits, smiling and with quick witty banter, definitely feeling it, "ode to joy". It definitely helped that we had sweet seats about 7 rows from the front smack dab in the middle with a perfect view of the stage and possibly the best sound I've heard at a "rock" concert. It was at the plush Centennial Concert Hall in beautiful downtown Winnipeg and hell, this is the home of the world famous WSO (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra) so you bet the sound acoustics are damn good.

Interestingly, the show almost didn't happen. With the threat of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) hitting North America hard, events, sports and public performances had begun to get cancelled and there was a real possibility this concert might be one of them. On the Winnipeg Wilco event Facebook page the afternoon of the show, there was over 20 posts with people selling tickets at below cost and at discount prices. Clearly, there was mild concern. Then on the Fb YFF fans page, someone posted that the Seattle shows with the Fellows opening was cancelled...oh oh! My hope was the band was already in town, probably arriving in the morning from the show in Duluth, MN the night before. To the relief of me and many many other Wilco fans the show went on, we are so lucky! Unfortunately, Winnipeg would be last show for a while. The next day it was announced all the dates going west, then down the coast to California and Vegas are postponed. That's 17 shows for now, maybe more. Stay tuned.

The show had many great highlights. Some of the individual solo performances within the band is always top notch. I've always said drummer, Glen Kotche is one of the best drummers today (fun fact: I saw Kotche's debut Wilco show at the First Avenue in 2001). During the live performance of
Via Chicago there's a a crazy part when the lights strobe on Kotche and he appears to be super-sped up, while the rest of the band are at regular speed, it's hard to describe, but it was cool and wow, what a drummer! There's no doubt Nels Cline is an incredible guitar player and his signature song with Wilco is the epic, Impossible Germany. Live and in person he dazzles effortlessly, his large frame manipulating all the sounds coming from his guitar. Sit back and really listen to this song, amazing! I was impressed, Wilco actually played the song I requested on Wilcoworld (you can request a song for every show), maybe my favourite song, Box Full Of Letters from the first Wilco album, A.M. Multi-instrumentalist, Pat Sansone was in the spotlight playing lead guitar and he proved the depth of talent within Wilco. I also considered requesting, Steely Dan's, Any Major Dude, a song Wilco has covered before.  The encore was great, the always pleasing, California Stars and a trio of Wilco classics from the Being There album, a terrific way to close the show.

I was impressed how good the sound quality turned out on the recording. Crisp, clear and balanced, about as good as you can ask. Of course, being part of an audience there is the usual hooting and hollering close by and some loud clapping from the guy beside me, but it isn't an issue. This is the sixth time I've seen (and recorded) Wilco and definitely this live recording sounds the best. If you ever have an opportunity to see the band live, see them! Oh yeah, after this current tour which also takes them to Europe (hopefully), in August they begin a tour with Sleater-Kinney through the states...hmmmm, what are my summer plans?

They Might Be Giants: 30 Year Flood- Live 1990

With each new calendar year, in the music selling biz there is the nostalgic "looking back" to past album releases and "celebrating" anniversaries from their original release date. Often they are celebrated in 10 year segments, 10th anniversary, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th...you get the idea. Annoyingly, the trend also celebrates in 5 year intervals, 5th, 15th 25th...etc, which is kind of pushing it, but 25th anniversary of anything still has a nice ring to it. It allows the artists (and/or the record companies) to cash in with a re-mastered special edition re-release of the original album maybe bulked up with bonus demos, outtakes, alt tracks from the same recording session (or no bonuses at all) to help sell something that was sold already. If the original album wasn't available on vinyl (or was), then a release on limited 180 gram vinyl is warranted or it may even constitute the box set treatment with possibly a booklet of photos and new flashy packaging which of course means a huge cash grab. It's weird nowadays since there's been a revival on vinyl LP records, that so many records in my collection are sold now as re-releases, but at least 2 to 3x the amount I paid originally, with no extras. As a record collector you are much better off seeking the original versions (if you want it on vinyl) usually at less money than the newer versions, and if there are bonus tracks, buy the CD, stream it or download it.

This anniversary trend also extends to the live concert tour with many bands focusing on a complete album where they perform the entire album from beginning to end. I've seen shows by the Pixies (Doolittle), Sloan (Twice Removed) and Posies (Frosting On The Beater) with this format celebrating the anniversary of those albums, with the rest of show a mix of their other songs. I think for the fans this can be special, especially if you are familiar and a fan of that album and it's an opportunity to relive that record live. It can be a very cool experience.

Currently, They Might Be Giants are on tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their major label debut and arguably their best known record, Flood. (Flood was released January 15, 1990) They will perform all of Flood, as well as other stuff (2 sets!). The Flood tour is nearly sold out (except one show), with a tour that takes them from early January to mid-May in select U.S. cities and I wouldn't be surprised if the band took the show to Europe later in the year.

I thought instead of posting a current TMBG's show from the Flood Show tour, here's a show from the tour in support of Flood when the record was released. It's a fine sounding FM radio broadcast from almost exactly 30 years ago. On the original file I downloaded years ago, the concert is dated February 28, at Wien, Arena with the same setlist below. But according to the TMBW: They Might Be A Wiki- The TMBG Knowledge Base, there is a discrepancy because on Feb. 28 the band performs in Stuttgart, Germany. On February 24th, the show is listed at the Arena in Vienna, Austria. The comment for that show is that songs listed on the setlist were broadcast on FM radio, so this date makes more sense. For continuity sake since the file is already uploaded and in respect for the original uploader, take note the file will probably be wrongly dated as 1990-02-28 so adjust the text file with the download accordingly. Confused? Anyone have any better clarification on the the venue and date? Regardless, this is a great live recording with (then) new material from Flood as well as songs from Lincoln and the first record.

13 years Of Trouble Finale Finally! Young Fresh Fellows- Live At Kirby's 1987: Day 13

This blog has been hanging around for the last 13 years and to commemorate this hard-to-believe feat, I've been posting the #13yearsoftrouble tribute series and finally...it's reached day 13! As a tribute to the name of this site (look it up if you haven't figure it out yet), I'm posting a great Young Fresh Fellows concert from way back in 1987! This is 33 years ago for heavens sake, a lifetime for many and for me the year I graduated university.

It's a clear sounding soundboard live recording during the "Chuck era" when founding member, guitarist, Chuck Carroll was still in the band before he left in 1988. This show is a good example of the amazing live shows the Fellows performed, with some cool jams and goofy covers. I received this show in a trade many years ago on 2 CDRs with one long track on disc 1 and two tracks (one for the encore) on the second disc. I recently split the tracks as best I could and re-burned the concert to discs to make it much more listenable. As I said the sound is great, though the recording levels are a little low (crank it up!) and I wish there was a bit more atmospheric crowd noise, but there aren't many complete Fellows live shows floating around and this one is a true find. Now, disco down with the "worst funk band in the world", the Young Fresh Fellows!!

Joe Jackson Band- Early Live concert 1978: Day 12

Sometimes some shows are too good to pass up to post on the blog. A live recording from an early Joe Jackson was upped on Dime last month and though I have many JJ live recordings with better sound quality, the historical significance intrigued me. This is the fourth ever gig by the Joe Jackson Band taped in their hometown of Portsmouth about a month after their the first ever show (also in Portsmouth). They had just completed recording sessions for the debut album, Look Sharp! which wasn't released until January 1979 and the debut single, Is She Really Going Out With Him? didn't release until October. This means the audience of the early shows wouldn't have had any prior knowledge of the material Joe Jackson and band performed until much later and Look Sharp! would go on to become one of the great debut albums of the 70's. Personally, Look Sharp! and the follow-up album, I'm The Man were records that changed my (music) life because at the time I was still mainly listening to the Beatles, Elton John, the Stones and other mainstream rock radio. It wasn't really punk, nor was it slick FM MOR mush, instead it was the beginning of "new wave" that could include piano and keyboards without sounding Prog or Electronic. It was cool with the thin ties, wrap around sunglasses, short hair, the skinny pants that helped to form the look and sound of new wave. This led to discovering similar sounding music such as Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, XTC, Squeeze, Talking Heads and many others.

I had the privilege of seeing the original Joe Jackson Band during their Volume 4/reunion tour in early 2003 and was very impressed how tight and great they sounded. I haven't been able to get into much of the other musical styles he has pursued during his long musical career, but I respect he can explore and move forward musically, but stay humble and still perform his older material. With this early concert in Portsmouth in 1978, the songs sound fresh, but don't sound too different than on the debut album. He has already shaped his sound and the quality of musicianship of the band members (Sanford, Maby and Houghton) are already evident. Though the sound quality isn't perfect, (this is an audience recording from the 70's) it is what it is and I feel fortunate this has seen the light of day, an important live recording from the Joe Jackson Band. The Rutles- Millstones, R.I.P. Neil Innes: Day 11

Happy New Year! It's 2020, but I still have some unfinished business from 2019. I'm still trying to complete the #13yearsoftrouble series, that celebrates the 13th year that this blog has been active (it's hard to believe), with a "day" for every year. Thanks for your patience!

This post is a tribute to Neil Innes, the multi-talented performer best known for being a member of the Rutles, Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and his collaborations with Monty Python. Innes was a writer, comedian and musician until he passed away on December 29th, near Toulouse. His career spanned six decades beginning with the Bonzo's in the late sixties, up until playing shows with the Idiot Bastard Band in 2012. Personally, he was best known to me as Ron Nasty from the originally fictional band, The Rutles, created by Innes and Eric Idle from Monty Python. The hilarious mockumentary film, All You Need Is Cash (aka The Rutles) was my first exposure to the group which included a soundtrack album, a followup album and live performances. This remains the best Beatles-related parody, with the film documenting the rise and fall of the Rutles, not unlike the career of the Beatles. The concept is bang on and the songs that bare a slight familiarity to Beatles songs, hold up well with age and on their own. I urge you to seek out the film (it must be available to download or stream somewhere) and listen to The Rutles (soundtrack) album and the follow-up, Archaeology from 1996 for the full experience. It's brilliant! This film predates Spinal Tap's heavy metal mockumentary by six years!

This Rutles rehearsal tape was rescued from a terrible bootleg purchased a long while ago. It contained the music I’ve included here, but also included extended sections of pirated dialogue and music from the film, along with awful adits, clumsy fades and every other manner of amateur bootlegger nonsense.

Yet buried within this mess was some legendary garage recordings by the Pre-Fab Four, in rehearsal just prior to bringing their songs and trousers to the world.

In order to prevent these rare recordings from being released to the public,
McQuickly sued Nasty and O'Hara,
Wom sued McQuickly,
Nasty sued O'Hara and Wom,
and in all the confusion,
O'Hara accidentally sued himself.

So it is only by special arrangement with Parlourphone that I am finally able to bring these recordings to fans at dimeadozen, in really super-duper kinda good audiophilesque sound.

I'm not sure if this is actually "rehearsals", but I'm guessing they are at least demos and outtakes. This is recorded in the studio, so the sound quality is excellent. Highly recommended!

The Zombies- Live On The BBC 1965-1967: Day 10

Not only are we nearing the end of the year, but we are also closing in on the end of the decade. This got me thinking of bands that have been around for over 50 years that are still active either through touring or recording new music. Fifty years is that magic age when you realize you are truly getting old and start to reflect back on the past. This past year saw the 50th anniversary of some classic albums released in 1969. Deluxe anniversary editions of records such as Abbey Road (Beatles), Let It Bleed (Stones), Arthur (Kinks), Tommy (The Who), just to name a few, remind us this was a great era of music. Celebrating it's 51st anniversary is an under the radar classic (at least at the time), the Zombies epic, Odessey and Oracle which has gained more critical acclaim as the years have gone by. Along with the previously mentioned bands, the Zombies have been around for well over 50 years, in fact they were formed in 1962, so they are approaching 6o years. There are few bands from that era who may have a member or two to carry the name, but at least the Zombies can boast they have their key principle members of Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent still a part of the most recent version of the band. The Zombies haven't shown signs of slowing down either as they continue to tour and perform since reforming in the 2000's. They have visited Winnipeg a few years back and are due in town at the local casino event centre on April 15, 2020.

Believe it or not, the Zombies only released two albums during their heyday in the 60's. They were more of a singles band than album oriented. They have actually put out more new material in the 2000's after reforming, though R.I.P. (aka: The Lost Album) from 2000 was a studio album of tracks Argent and Chris White planned to release in 1969, as well as demos and outtakes from previous sessions. A cool documentation of the Zombies in concert, Live on the BBC 1965-1967 was released in 1985 on Rhino Records. is an excellent solid mix of R & B covers and original songs. I bought this LP for a co-worker, who is a huge Zombies fan, and before giving it away I digitized the album for personal use. This is what is posted below, ripped directly from the original vinyl transferred to FLAC format. It's a very enjoyable recording, even includes interview segments that can't help but make you love this band even more. Have a listen and go see them live because I'm sure they'll be playing at a casino near you...very soon!
